I am planning a build with 4 5870s, I am deciding whether to go single PSU or dual PSU setup.

How much wattage would I need? If possible, can you guys recommend some for me?

Cheers.;)

What CPU will u being using and will u overclock the CPU?

I see. Anyway, I would recommend a 1000-1200W PSU for that system. Silverstone ST1000F-P, Corsair HX1000, BFG EX-1000, Enermax Revolution85+ 1050W, Antec Truepower Quattro 1200W, Enermax Galaxy EVO 1250W, Silverstone ST1200, etc.

That's enough for it? I thought that I would need about 1500 watts. Thanks for the info:cool:

My best guesstimate and the Extreme Power Supply Calculator both put peak power consumption at 900w-1kW for that system. I agree with Zero82 that a 1200w unit would be enough. I'm not absolutely up on what every unit in that wattage range is good right now, but I can throw a few out there anyhow.

There was a review posted @ JonnyGuru of the Antec Truepower Quattro 1200w and it did its rated power at 43*C intake temperatures. The only problems with it are that a, being cooled by an 80mm fan, if your case isn't well ventilated it's going to get pretty loud, and b, it has these "Power Cache" capacitors on its cables that add bulk and are a halfassed hack disguised as a marketing feature; it needs them to keep ripple under control. If those points don't bother you, it'd do what you need it to.

The Thermaltake Toughpower 1200w is an older design but it got a gold award from [H], so it might be worth a look too. Of course for what the Tt 1200w goes for on Newegg right now, the 1500w Silverstone (which was also well reviewed @ JG) is only a few bucks more, and while it may be more power than you need you wouldn't be running it as hard as you would be a 1200w unit. The only drawback with that unit is that the secondary uses Teapo caps, which are kinda meh.

So yeah, I'd start by looking at those three units. :) What case are you planning on throwing this all in, anyhow? That's a lot of heat to dissipate.

Well, each HD5870 uses approximately 180-200 watts, so figure 800 watts alone. A non-overclocked HD5870 has a TDP of approximately 180 watts. An overclocked Phenom II x6 at those speeds will probably use 200 watts, so you're looking at 1000 watts. Tack on peripherals, that's about 100 watts to be on the safe side. So I would go with what everyone is recommending: a 1200 watt power supply.

The Antec Quattro is definitely one of the best 1200 watt power supplies out there. ABS also seem to make good power supplies, and Cooler Master is decent. One of the Xion power supplies on Newegg has a 5 egg rating with 30 reviews, so that seems pretty solid. I would go look on Newegg, see which ones have high reviews, and go research them online. 4-5 eggs are what I look at, 3 eggs is just a little too low. I've heard that the Ultra X4 aren't half bad either.

Is it just better to go for 2 midrange power supplies instead a high-end one?

no, you are better off with a single PSU

Newegg user reviews are good for a laugh...not for deciding what to buy. Too many shills and idiots posting reviews
Ultra X4s aren't half good
