Stupid weather.... caused me to lose nearly 2 full days of production while the power company dicked around with the other countless outages here in DFW.. Having a UPS is great, till the batteries go flat. Anyone [H]ardcore enough to buy a backup generator for folding? :D
 
Since I live in an apartment there is no place to put one. Plus the electric company is very good about getting power restored quickly where I live.

However, to keep all my boxen up and running for a few hours would cost me in the range of $2-3k for a proper backup system.

That would be [H]ardcore.....but you have to ask yourself once you have all that cash ready to buy the generator.....wouldn't it be better to get a new quad :D. That is why I will never be able to fold in a power failure.

 
It's OK. Your team picked up the slack while you were out. That's the nice thing about distributed computing. It's not all on the shoulders of one person.


 
Aye think of it this way the days you have perfect are days someone else might be struggling and the days you struggle someone else is perfectly stable... it all balances out!

That has been my thought..... So I just purchased more computers and if they are down for lose of power (we rarely lose power here) so be it.... I'm cranking more WU during my 99.9% uptime.

If I could I would buy a generator. But also I'm in down town chicago. We have not had a single power outtage more than a few minutes in 4 years.

 
Two nights in a row of some really strong (bad) weather. I live in North Fort Worth and feel for ya brother. It kept me up most of both nights (after working all day). I was a grump by the time Friday hit. I just finished sleeping 12 hours trying to make up for it. My wife's computer is on a UPS and mine isn't (yet). I'll be fixing that shortly.

 
Our house is really old, built in the 20's... and we have short power outages here constantly. It sucks, but fortunately, I have a UPS for all my boxen.... a generator on the otherhand... now that would be [H]ard!

 
Yeah, I live in apartment also. I've got no room for a generator and my neighbors would probably complain anyway :rolleyes: (having a generator would really be [H]ard core) :D. .

What I've done, only having 3 boxen with dual core cpus ATM, is put them on a an old Tripplite 850 Pro until I can get my APC 600 UPS fixed with new bats.:D

Just a suggestion, if you need any battery replacements for your UPS's go to Battery Giant online store as I did. I was impressed with their prices, service to customers and large inventory. (they had batteries for every known UPS in the universe, I heard even martians come to them for UPS bats :p )

PS I've got another UPS sitting here on the floor waiting on new batterys. (APC 600) I got both on Ebay, I wish I had just got one big UPS ( the 850 is about 500 something watts and the 600 is only 400 watts, I think :confused:)

FWIW my electricity is pretty stable. :)

 
Is it possible to buy a low/mid range UPC and then buy much larger batteries for the unit?

 
I don't know, but a while back there was a thread here somewhere about "home made" UPS units using car batteries, and apparently, you can squeeze quite a bit of run time out of that type of setup if it's put together correctly...

I'll search around and see if I can find the thread....

 
Hey thanks for the replys teammates. I think I read something about using bigger batteries, but I was afraid it might fry my boxen or worse yet start a fire. :eek:

lol.. fine I'll takes pics tomorrow when its daylight.. plus its kinda cold and crappy outside right now here. They will be crappy digital camera phone pics though since my actual digital cam went to Vegas with a buddy and I haven't gotten it back yet

Uses propane.. produces 12kw.. can run most of the house with it.. probably the whole house but when power goes out I try to limit the draw as much as I can.
 
I've finally gotten to look at the horde of apc units I have laying around. one of them is an old apc 500. Probably good for about a minute of backup run time, so then I looked at the next model up, the 600. Well all the 600 does is use two 500 series batteries in series. So why can't I just do that with the 500? Just keep the batteries outside the casing, wire em up, then use that?
