Ok,

Zalman VF700CU installed with AS5. It still needs some cure time, but my idle temp is now 46c.

I will do a load test in a couple of days to let the ram sinks' thermal pad reach full strength.

I wonder if it is a case cooling problem? I doubt it though because my CPU is idling at 34c in a room with an ambient temp of 74F.

I have my stuff in an Antec Sonata case. if you think that this case is not a good case for airflow, please recommend another. I have 2 x 120mm fans (1 intake and 1 exhaust)
 
Well, I did a 10 minute load test this morning and I have to say either a reinstall of windows is required or the card sucks ass.

I started out with an idle temp of 46c and after 10 minutes the card was 68c and I don't know if it would have leveled off yet because I had to leave for work. What makes me say that it sucks as is when the temp was 68c, scrolling through webpages that had pictures in it while I was running the artifacting test became choppy, but that could just be the test causing that an not so much the temperature. Or it could be that I get up too early to go to work (4:25am). :D

Overall, the performance of the cooler is much better than the stock cooler during this stress test as I would have been hitting 90c+ with 100% fan speed.

Can you tell me how you guys are measuring your temps? (what tool?)
What are you using to stress your card for load temps?
Can you tell me what your ambient temp is?

I just bought the X850XT and I bought a VF700... I haven't installed the VF700 yet because I'm worried that i'm going to mess up the the temperatures. Right now on stock cooling using ATITool, I'm getting a max of 67 C during heat up phase at 577.80 Mhz. It didn't start artifacting until it got to 580 Mhz and I think I'm going to settle for 567 Mhz. Do any of you think that 67 C is too low for stock cooling? I was really surprised after reading this thread since my load temperatures are so much lower with the stock cooling. Should I install the VF700 and see if it improves the temperature even more?

Oh, and BTW, my case temperature is 24 C and CPU temperature is 50 C... I think I have relatively good case ventilation.
 
I would install it because no matter how good your stock cooler is, the Zalman can do better.

Yeah, they are... why am I lucky? it seems that they are close to the same that everybody else is getting for the AGP... well, anyways, I just installed the VF700 with AS5 and my idle temperature stayed at 39 C and the load temperature went down from 67 C to 62 C. I'm going to try to run ATI tool again and see if I can increase the core speed any higher. I ended up settling for 560 MHz for the core and 591 MHz for the memory. For some reason, when I overclock the memory, I get some artifacting but very little at 567 MHz, it doesn't happen if I don't overclock the memory. Well, time for ATITool once again!

Oh... I forgot to mention that once I installed the VF700 my CPU temperature went up 3 C, so I guess my case ventilation is not that great.

UPDATE: Well, my max core speed without artifacting is still the same, so I still settled for 560 MHz, so I think I'm voltage limited in this case. But my memory is stable up to 602 MHz, so I'm settling for 596 MHz, so the Zalman memory heatsinks increased my memory overclock by 5 MHz.

UPDATE 2: I ran 3Dmark 05 with those settings and i'm getting 6219, which is very good in my opinion, and the temperatures never went over 60 C, so i'm satisfied.

When I have it Idle at 600/600 the temp is 42/38 (give or take)
When I it has full load 600/600, it goes up to around 69/50 (give or take).

Did you have to voltage mod your graphics card to achieve core speeds that high?

What apps is that OC stable in?
plz post some 3Dmark scores, that's an impressive OC.
 
No volt mod, no artifacts with ATT, I put it through the 3Dmark01 old man in tree scene loop. Also played battlefield 2 for like 8 hours strait, no artifacts nor any issues that I could relate to my video card (now I do have serious PSU problems and I have a feeling that may be limiting me from going higher than 600/600).

That's impressive :D Congrats!

what software have you been using to OC? I'm just using the OEM CCC Catalyst drivers myself. AntecNeo 480W PSU.

The above OCs were on my DFI LP 925X-T2 motherboard. Today I just got my First AMD64 rig put together. Hopefully I can pull a better GPU OC on this board.

Yes, its in Fahrenheit, im one of those people who live in the US and refuse to use metric (when i have the choice -- damm socket sets and allen wrenches)
 
I live in the USA and i prefer Celcius over ferenheit, it's easier when comparing temperatures with the rest of the world... I think USA is one of the only country left that doesn't use the metric system... we should switch already!!!!

i finally have some Arctic silver 5, cleaned off gpu and stock heatsink and load temp is 78c now instead of 85c, arctic silver hasnt had a chance to settle in yet. hopefully ill see lower temps soon
 
Just out of interest, what voids the warranty on a card, ive got a X850XT PE and was thinking of either putting some AS 5 on the stock HSF or getting maybe a Zalman or Silencer?

Also ive noticed im getting what looks like artifacting after playing Doom 3 and exiting to windows. All over the desktop, multi coloured pixels appear everywhere. If i then start Doom again but quit out immediatley it goes back to normal but any amount of playing causes the problem. My card hits 78c max whilst playing even after adjusting the fan speeds using ATi Tray Tools.

....is it RMA time?

No, that is still acceptible according to ATI. If you remove the stock HSF, you void the warranty. I personally don't give a rats-a$$ about the warranty because the heat alone pushed out by that card with the stock cooler is enough to get me worried about how this card affects my mobo and other component near it. I put a Zalman VF700Cu on mine and my temps were the following:

Stock HSF:

Idle : 55c
Load: 90c+

Zalman VF700CU:

Idle: 40c
Load: 66c

What version of the catalyst drivers are you using?
 
Im actually using Omega's version of the 5.7 Cats, im gonna try some older versions tonight to see if the artifacting persists.

If it is something to do with the card then RMAing it may be a bit of an arse as I live across 'the pond' in England and all the address's ive seen for returns/servicing from ATI are in the US of A :rolleyes:.....i'll cross that bridge when i get 2 it though.
 
my x850xtpe is idling at ~39-40ºC, and is loading out at ~55-58ºC

no artifacting or problems whatsoever. (Omegadrivers' catalyst 5.7 suite.)

i think a lot of issues that might be had with artifacting and exceedingly high card temps might be relative to case ventillation and wiring efficiency... when i have all my fans running slower (7v) my card heats up more, but when they're running at 9 or 12v, the card runs that much cooler. it's just something to consider.
