I'm jealous. My Auralex squares are purple. PURPLE. ughhh, I cant stand to look at it a second longer. I actually moved my rig up to my room, and left all the room stuff in my basement, it was so ugly and dark.
 
Hey Pinipig523... I was just browsing this thread (just found it) when I happened across the pictures of your setup. I hold you personally responsible for the two slimy dots on my monitor screen from when my eyeballs popped out of my face. Feel free to send me some baby wipes for my screen... my address is... :D Anyway, killer setup to say the least... and I thought I was getting somewhere when I ditched the PC speakers and went with a receiver and some Pioneer speakers :rolleyes: I got a long way to go.

how do you like the pioneer's? what is your tower sitting on... your sub?

i have four of them and the matching center but don't like them for music, games sound great though. for my gaming rig i limited placment options so i am mating them with an onix x-sub.
 
I don't have a sub just yet... although I may just add in a pair of Cerwin-Vegas on the "B" speaker channel for that extra bass response. I love the Pioneers for the $35 I paid for the pair, but I do find that low end sound is a bit lacking... but all in due time. I just recently made the move to a receiver from a set of Logitech PC speakers, and I fear I am becoming something of an audiophile... oh lord, I'm gonna be broke before I know it.

My tower is the Lian Li A05B and it's sitting on my Lian Li V-1000B... they matched up well enough that I decided to do it like that. The V-1000 used to be my main rig, but then I had to go and fall in love with the A05B... so now the V-1000 houses my previous hardware. I thought about turning the V-1000 into a server and filling it with hard drives... but I don't need the space yet, I have 350+ gigs left in my main rig.

On another note, my wife keeps telling me I should put the cloth speaker grills back on the Pioneers... NO, I SAY! They look cool as hell without them... so there :rolleyes:
 
Hey Sniviler, I am not exactly sure of the model/name of the desk... but I do know it's from Ikea. I bought it from my sister, and I'm not sure if they make this exact model anymore. This desk is infinitely adjustable... every surface can be adjusted as high or low as you want. I do believe Ikea has a desk called the Fredrik that is adjustable in the same manner. I was kind of hoping someone on these forums could tell me what my desk was called...lol. My sister has had it for several years, and her boyfriend had it before that... so it's probably a much older model for Ikea. I paid her $40 bucks and it was mine. You might check on ebay or craigslist or something of the sort. I apologize for my lack of information on the desk, but if I can find out anything I will post it.

Ikea Jerker. And you are correct, they don't make that anymore, and the Fredrik replaced it.
 
Hey TooBooKoo, I just took back my Pioneers and got some Polk R150s from Frys.com.
They are WAY!!!!!!!!!!! better, they have way more bass and at times people think I have a sub, until I let them listen to my main system ^_^. (it has a 10"er :p)
 
Yeah, I wasn't gonna say anything, but I've never heard a set of Pioneers that wasn't pretty crappy (although I don't think I've heard that particular model). Good job on the Polks, way better speakers.
 
Thanks montypythizzle, I want to try 'em out now... they're only $50 on frys.com... can't go wrong with that price I suppose. I've always thought Polk made some good speakers, I had some in my car. The only car speaker I've found that sounded better than the Polks were my Cerwin Vegas... but this is in my car so I'm not sure if that translates to home audio the same way or not. I only paid $35 for the Pioneers so I'm going to keep them I suppose... but I definitely will try out them Polks for $50. Thanks again... that's why I love these forums.

I mean they are that good, decent soundstage too.
I mean really.
They are like going from MDR-V150s to HE90s, if you are a headphone person.

My dad has some nice, mid-size floor standers (PioneeR) and they sound pretty good, of course they have an 8" woofer, 3" mid, and * size tweeter and I think cost ~250. The Pioneers look good but the bass cannot get out of the box fast enough and so it makes a fluffy sound, and they have no low range.
The Polks have the same problem with the port being small, it only really shows it when playing misc. bass songs with fluffy bass and trying to use them as woofers. ^_^.

I mean really, get them.

I am always eager for a more quality audio experience... that's why I switched away from dedicated PC speakers in the first place... there's usually no midrange there.
And I'm sort of a headphone guy... I used to use some MDR-V600's so much that the foam earcups started wearing out, so my mom recovered 'em... anyway... now I have some MDR-XD200's that I bought for $20 and they are pretty good, but I have always preferred speakers to headphones. I'd hate to be headbanging and my headphones fly off right into my monitor :eek: not really... I just prefer not wearing headphones if possible... sometimes headphones are a must though because my Jack Russell hates it when I play certain music... and trust me, you don't want a mad Jack Russell :D

Got them from frys...they seem to have a nice demo room, and theres some people who know what theyre talking about...still try to shove extended warrenty down your throat though

I had forgotten just how sensitive the Mission 732 are to positioning. They sound SO much better here than how they were before.

Thanks Toobookoo! It's the journey that counts man!

Right now, my TT set up is laying a little low... got some problems with the cartridge and it is frustrating when a piece of machinery does not work as advertised. Anyway, just venting.

Nice set up tho.. listen to nicholaskl and monty.... the polks have more experience with speaker design than does pioneer (except for their new TAD series). Keep us informed as to what you end up with. ;)

1. RTi4 have been well received by many. I have auditioned them many many times and they are good and articulate speakers.
2. Err... yeah.. that's what we all say. :p
 
You could just move the Pioneers to the rear, and keep the Polks up front.

I mean the Pioneers cannot even compete.

Best thing would be to get the Polks and a pretty good subwoofer and have a nice 4.1 system.

79" technics....costed my dad around 400$ back then..not bad of a CDP

i also have a turn table from them from that era...and i also have a reel2reel and a tape deck, and to round it all out a autocorrelator...i win for vintage gear :D

Well seeing as how I just bought the Pioneers, I'll probably just return them and go with the Polks... then use any extra money to go toward a sub. BTW, what is a good sub for the price? Keep in mind I'm on sort of a budget here. I found this one at Fry's... is it a good match with the R150's?

And I have another question for all you speaker guys out there...
My dad and I have this long going argument going on as to which is more important, the amp/receiver or the speakers. I say the speakers make the difference because I've had crappy speakers on a good amp and they sound crappy... but I've had good speakers on a crappy amp, and guess what... sounded good. My dad swears the amp makes all the difference and you can use any ol' speaker :rolleyes: I figure that your setup is really only as strong as the weakest link... but is there a good rule of thumb here? Or better yet, who's more on the correct side... him or me? I just wanna settle this...lol. C'mon guys, say it's me :p
BTW, In all of my 28 years I have never heard a set of crappy speakers sound good... but maybe that's just me.

That sub isn't going to get much love around here. The BIC H-100 or the X-Sub are both highly recommended.
 
Eh, I would have to go with their choices, just save some more. Although that Polk doesn't look TOO bad, hopefully you have a Fry's in your area, I think someone said they had an auditioning room. AV123 has a 30 day in home trial or w/e, IDK if they have free return shipping however.
 
i said they have an audition room...its not bad..dunno if they have the polks out for audition..check your local frys
 
Hey guys... I just purchased the Polk R150's montypythizzle told me about. They should be here soon. Anyway, I have a question as I'm rather new to this audio stuff... my receiver/amp is rated at 6 ohms and 133 watts per channel for the front 2 channels... the Polk's specs are rated @ 8 ohms and recommended RMS is 20 - 100 watts... am I looking at potential trouble here? I would hate to hurt a pair Polks. I have the receiver hooked to my computer via a fiber optic cable if that makes any difference :confused: sorry, I'm a noob. If anyone has any recommendations or comments I would appreciate it greatly... I just want to get the best audio I can afford and I don't want to mess anything up in the process. Plus, I would like to learn as much as I can about what I'm doing and why... I'm not the type of person to just do something without learning why I'm doing it.

You shouldn't run into any problems, if you are pushing these things at ~100W then they are going to be screaming at you, and you will know if to turn them down.
Don't worry, if the voice coil hits the magnet then you know to turn it down ^_^.

AV123 refunds the full price (including shipping to you) as well as return shipping for the 30-Day trial. I was looking into trying a pair of x-mtm's and getting a friend a pair of x-ls'. =T

Scheduled delivery is tomorrow sometime so maybe I'll get it all setup tomorrow night and be able to post some more pics or something. You said they were like going from a cheaper set of Sony headphones to some top end Sennheiser's... if that's true, then you are my hero :D I called out to the Fry's store locally and I asked if they had the Polk R150's in stock for pick up and I asked them what the in store price was... they said $179.99 :eek: now that's the price range I was expecting when you first told me of them... but nonetheless I got 'em for a sweet $49.99 plus tax and shipping. I wanna thank you again for pointing them out to me.

And so my entry into audio geekdom begins... I had a hard time convincing my wife that $33 for a fiber optic audio cable was a "good price"... I tried to explain to her that a system is only a strong as the weakest link, but she kept pointing out the RCA cables and saying "but that one's only $5" :rolleyes: But then when I let her hear some music through my headphones, she sort of changed her mind and didn't want to admit it :eek: yeah, I saw her singing and pushing the headphones tighter against her head... I know what was going on there. lol.

I just got a BIC H-100 to replace my JBL sub. The difference is impressive. I was quite surprised at how much better/cleaner the H-100's bass sounded. I'd go with the BIC over the X-sub. I've got a pair of AV123 X-LS to go with the BIC and the 3 speakers produce a fantastic soundfield.

Well, with optical cables there is not much difference, none TBH, then one from Monoprice.com.

If you have a Head-Fi habit then this is just another hole in anyone's budget.
 
I got my Polk R150's today... Damn! :eek: These things are better. They completely mash up the Pioneers I had. I am hearing things in music that I never knew existed... they are truly that much better. Thanks again guys for pushing me towards these. The only problem is, now I think I'm addicted... and I wonder what all I'm missing with the Polks ;) I wonder how much I could sell my car for :p I am actually beginning to hear how much MP3's suck. I can only imagine what some you of guy's music sounds like... you know who I'm talking about. Anyway, maybe I'll get there someday... until when is then, I'm going to enjoy the journey.

I'm gonna get everything setup and post some more pics... but tonight I have to build my wife a new computer so I'll be busy with that. It's a surprise for her, she's gonna love it... I'm gonna paint it purple for her, but that's another thread...

I've also spilt some tea inside the amp the other day by accident, took me a good few hours to clean it all out but thankfully it only touched the power board and spilled into the transformer coils shield dish .
 
wow... close call. had a bunch of friends over for dinner and a 151&coke found its way into the onkyo receiver on my gaming rig. good thing it already died or i would be a tad upset about my wet paper weight.
