Just got the SB40. Pretty much the best headset I have had yet. I have never spent above $20 for a headset. After having spent the extra money on a decent headset, I am getting antsy to buy up an AD700...

Here's my SOHA hybrid Opamp / Tube amp with my Sennheiser HD555's. Nothing amazing, but they serve me well.

I'm looking to buying a pair of Sennheiser HD555 headphones. Can you tell me what the sound leakage is like on these open backed cans? I need something that isn't too loud on the outside but want the comfort of the open backed design (baby on the way and don't want to disturb the little one!)

Dialog and such will be audible from a couple feet away. Music can be heard from across a medium-sized room, depending on how loud you listen.

Don't have any pics (no digicam), but I recently got AKG K414P headphones. Beside those, I also have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770M headphones.

It really brings out the DT770s. The bass and highs are really detailed with it. I'm excited to see what it sounds like after 100 hours or so. I got it for $150ish or so from eBay.

I haven't really noticed a large difference on the Alessandros though, probably because they don't really need it. I have a lot more listening to do, that's for sure.

I went from the SR80s to the DT770s, sold the SR80s as soon as I got the DT770s.

the 770s are ok, deep open darths much better, stax best of all. you should try senn 650s if you like the 770 bass. the 650s go really low too. Difference is that they are much cleaner.

Transformer box in the interm. Blue Hawaii electrostat amp soon-ish.

I was just wondering, where do you put your Omega 2 when you are not using them? Do you put them back into the box or just leave them on the table?

BTW how is the Northstar DAC? I'm currently saving up to get a better DAC for my Omega 2 but still haven't got an idea of which DAC to pick (looking to spend about $2500).

These do not include my portables and RS-1 that I picked up after the pic was taken

Haha, MS. Though, for sound on one side only, that's usually a loose connection somewhere (usually where the cord connects to the speaker.) Mind you, lol, I can see why you might not particularly want to even bother with them. Well, I'm sure MS didn't actually make them, but then I doubt they contracted someone who believes in quality either... Probably whatever cheap Chinese manufacturer underbidded everyone else.

Anyway, personally, I'm on the low end side of things since I don't really have a lot of money to throw around. I don't have a digital camera, but they don't show much and you can google for images if you really want them. None of this equipment really looks that great though, so there's probably no point. Anyway, I just recently got a pair of Grado SR60s and tried them out for a while. I loved them because they were just worlds better than anything else I had at the time. I also tried the quarter mod and then picked up the L-Cush earpads hoping they'd be a bit more comfortable and I'd say the sound was improved by both of these. But then I was forced to get a window air conditioner due to the sheer heat and the way it has been forcing me to run my house A/C almost literally 24/7 (needless to say, the power bills haven't been pretty and despite that it STILL gets pretty hot in here going just by the house A/C.) So now my main listening environment has a fairly decent level of noise in it and that doesn't sit well with 100% open headphones like the Grados (all of them, lol.) My ears are getting tired of me putting things in them, so, while I mostly like the sound of my Shure E2Cs (though I can't seem to get a terribly good seal so the bass is a bit lacking despite their response in that range,) I'm finding them more and more uncomfortable and have basically just dedicated them to when I'm away from home. To that end, I broke down and decided to buy a pair of closed sets without much hope of them sounding good since I couldn't afford to spend much. I did some searching around and a LOT of googling and was leaning towards the Sennheiser HD280 Pro as the only thing I could really afford that seemed halfway decent, but I didn't like what people were saying about the sound of the things. Then I happened upon the Denon AH-D1001 sets on Amazon. Apparently a bunch of sellers are trying to get rid of them or something because, instead of the $150 price tag they normally should have, they are around $80 or so depending on which seller and which color you get (there is a silver -- the S model -- and a black -- the K model. Black for some reason costs a bit more.) I looked them up and they have a sound response curve that's very smooth and average so I decided to try them. At first I slighly liked my SR60s better, but, now that I've burned these things in, I find them to sound rather a decent amount like my SR60s, but better in every way (the highs are even clearer, there is notably more bass -- admitedly maybe a little bit more than I really wanted, but not excessive IMO -- but even the lows are clearer IMO.) Now I'm listening to everything with the Denons instead. Their particular sound suits me very well really. The seal may not be absolutely perfect so I do hear a bit of the A/C (especially in really quiet passages) but so much of its sound is blocked that I can now mostly ignore it. Also, I kind of like the fact that, unlike with the SR60s, should I take these on the go, everyone within a 15 foot radius won't hear EXACTLY what I'm hearing, lol. (Actually, I was surprised. Once they are over something, there is practically no sound leakage and someone sitting right next to you probably wouldn't even be able to guess what musical genre you are listening to, much less pick out any words or anything.) Once these were burned in, they really opened up and now I have a great sound stage, clear sound, strong but not overwhelming bass that still leaves low things like a low violin or cello sounding clear and nice, and so on. For less than I spent on my SR60s (after adding the L-cush pads) I think I came off pretty well. Of course, at their normal price you might be able to do better, but at this price I honestly believe they would blow the Sennheiser HD280 Pros away.

Actually, I think I will show a picture since it's kind of funny. Denon clearly put every last penny of their research money in these into comfort and sound quality. Not one penny went to looks clearly:

That's not to say they are necessarily ugly, just very cheap looking. You could probably walk into a local retail store and come out with a $20 pair of very crappy sounding headphones that wouldn't look very different. In fact, I've already managed to scratch a bit of that silver paint off on one side where the can rubs against the headband's connection that lets it move around a little. I'm glad I didn't get the blacks since this would stand out. I wouldn't be embarassed to be seen with these in public though. Sadly, they don't turn like the SR60s do, so I can't really pack them for carrying around. For now I'll stick to my Shure E2Cs on the go. They fit in my pocket anyway.

On that subject, to complement these I have a Cowon D2 DAP and a CMoy pocket amp. Again not the most expensive of equipment, but all together I have a setup that would at least not make an audiophile weep. That's more than people spending hundreds on Bose and other such gimicky sound setups can say. d-:

Thats funny. We have the same headphones.
I recently purchased the Denon AH-D1001 (black) cans about 2 months ago. After some burn in time, they really do sound great on my PC and my mixer. I don't recommend connecting straight to a portable DAP without an amp of some sort (i'm still looking for an amp). I've tried taking the Denons on the road and the sound isolation is really lacking. Lets just say they aren't suited for bus rides or live monitoring. As far as build quality, they are much better than the Sony and Phillips headphones I used to think were cool. They're pretty comfortable. I can wear them all day while gaming. On the other hand..
The Shure e2g set I have has a new Neutrik plug on it. Sound isolation is awesome and nice for travel. I do agree the bass is lacking. Sometimes it feels like the highs are quite shrill at the upper ends of my player's volume range. I have to constantly shift my EQ on my player, which gets old sometimes. Other than that, i've grown used to the fit and the sound is cleaner than other headphones i've had in the past. They have taken a beating over the years and i've had to learn which is the L/R side. I'll be looking to upgrade them soon.

Well, the Cowon D2 provides a pretty hefty amount of current for a DAP (officially rated at 37mw on each channel.) I'm not even sure I can really hear a difference between the two except when I turn the D2 almost all the way up (and even then only sometimes,) but I'm not very good at comparing sound and admitedly the only amp I have is a CMoy (I'll have to get better one of these days, but with the truly good amps actually costing more than these headphones I'm not 100% convinced that's the best route and regardless just can't afford it atm.) I must say Cowon has always managed to impress me with their focus on quality. If I update my DAP in any kind of near future, I'm actually inclined just to go with a larger internal storage model of the same player (I think they are up to 16GB now. Combined with that SDHC card slot, this thing could last me a long time even as a music video player. Apparently there is a maximum file limitation though, so more internal storage helps since it treats internal and external seperately as I understand it.)

I've more or less talked myself into modding them though. Soon they'll be more than just the AH-D1001S. On Head-Fi one person claimed they would be close to 90% of the AH-D2000. Probably not a realistic number, but, apparently the Markl mod and recabling will almost completely solve the problem of the bass, so I think after that I'll be perfectly happy with these headphones no longer with anything to complain about. I believe there's a decent chance that even I can't screw this one up as it's not exactly a complicated process. The most complicated thing it sounds like will be being careful not to overheat the part holding the thing in when soldering in the new cable (and with a 15 watt soldering iron and a bit of patience I think I can manage) and getting the bubbles out of the Dynamat. This definitely sounds like a realistic thing I can do to me.

BTW, on the E2Cs I've read a fair bit about them and it seemed like most of the reviewers were saying that they actually had a bit of a bass bias even. I'm wondering if the problem here is that they just don't fit some of us QUITE right. More a question of quality of seal than amount of it I guess if this makes any sense. I don't know. I've ended up trying to get a better seal with them and have actually put a larger ear pad on the right than the left since it seems a smidge looser but the large is too large so it's definitely a bit uncomfortable. I may be remembering wrong or misunderstanding, but considering how they obviously don't quite fit my ears as well as it feels like they should I'm not quite sure. For the most part I've gotten used to their sound and the lack of a strong bass is bugging me less than it used to, but I still prefer my Denons any day despite the fact that I actually feel like they have too much. Especially when I'm done modifying them so it will hopefully be close to perfect for my listening style. I may have to find some kind of hard case I can put them in that's relatively small or something, lol. I love how I can keep my E2Cs with me at all times on the go by keeping them in my pocket, but, if I could find something that would fit in my locker at work for the Denons that might be sufficient. I'm not carrying them around without something solid to protect them though... Ironically, I found a DS case that fit my SR60s perfectly when I turned them (as in they were tight so there could be no banging around even) but I don't really like the SR60s on the go because I really don't want to have to explain why I'm listening to this or that to everyone who steps into the room (not to mention that while I'm explaining I'm not listening, lol.)

Ha...I'm using different sized pads on them too. I'm actually using the black silicone pads. They seem to offer better sealing and more bass. I really do like what bass they do have, but in the extreme lower ranges, the response falls like a rock.

The Cowan D2 I had drove a pair of Senn 600s!!!!! Well!!! With serious bass!!!

In other words, the Cowan amp and sq is AMAZING.

Plus, tiny pron on the screen ftw! That was a fun toy.

Just curious... I have my sennheiser HD485's that I absolutely love. How much better than that can headphones get??? I seriously would like to try some high end ones out but the only ones in stores near me are those shitty bose triports and quietcomforts which sound absolutely TERRIBLE in comparison to my headphones...

I have never heard the 485s before but when I had my HD650s and RS1s, I thought that's about as good as headphones get and the even more expensive ones don't sound that much better. After I got the Stax, I realised that headphone sounds can always get better, much better in fact. Now I really want to try out some L3000s, R10s and of course, HE90s :D (highly unlikely since they're all out of production :(. If L3000 comes back to production again, I will be one of the first guys to buy one)

@spaceman: how many ultra high end headphones have you heard (like R10, HE90)? How do they compare with the Omega 2 MkI or MkII?

I have heard Omegas, Lambda Normal Bias, K1000s, He60 and liked the Omegas then the Lambdas($300!!! but good luck getting a pair for that) then the HE60 and the K1000 in that order.

Stax own. They just do.

Sky is the limit with hi end headphones.. With great source & optimal amplification I doubt you can do any better SQ wise.. That includes all but the most expensive speakers.. My DAC1 balanced 650's combo was mind numbling good with great recordings.
