Did you buy that SATA power cable or make it yourself? If purchased, where can you buy that, I have only seen 4 port with connectors that close together.
 
I bought this case about a month ago. Had to give up on the hotswap bays (for now) with this case :( but the price was pretty attractive ... I think I paid like 68 bucks shipped. I haven't populated the case with any hardware, so I don't have any pictures of my own to post currently... mostly just curious if anybody had used this case before and what they thought of it.

I actually just picked up that case to move my parts from another server into. For the price it is not bad. I was not thrilled with the plastic rails that hold the drives in, and the center fans sit a little to close to the harddrives for my taste.
 
I'd like to take a moment out to talk about how much I hate how good you are at taking photo's of computers. :p Love it.
 
How do all you guys with the 5-in-3 bays justify the cost of the build? It's gotta cost at least $300, or even up to $500 for this setup. Why not just buy a Norco product? They cost less, and they're have better build quality than a custom and retrofitted case.
 
I actually have both a norco and a coolermaster rc-590. I would say that the coolermaster case (or one with multiple 5 in 3's) can fit into spaces a little better than the norco. The norco case is pretty deep and if you don't have a rack to put it in or somewhere where it can be isolated (noise) the other case can be better for you.

I am actually thinking of taking everything out of my norco and moving it to my rc-590. Or even going back to my complete all in one rig with all of my hdd's in my daily driver.

Asposium, where did you get those 5 in 3's at? I have the beige ones from my old Supermicro 750 case. Also did you have to do any modding of the chasis brackets to get them to fit inside the 590?

Good thing you brought up noise. These Supermicro cages have 80mm fans to cool them. There is no way they are quiet. Some Norco's have 3x 120mm with an optional $15 bracket. All the reviews I read say it's whisper silent this way.

Personally, if I had to go with a tower case, the only add-in hot swap cages I would consider would be the Lian Li EX-34H and the Kingwin KF-4001-BK. Unfortunately they are both 4-in-3 but they have 120mm fans. Still can't justify the price though.
 
I used a mid-desktop case for size. When I started the build it was a very simple build, however the build evolved. If I started again I would still take this route.

The CSE-M35TQ uses 92mm fans.

I purchased the CSE-M35TQB from a UK reseller.
 
Well I have your common Norco 4224 so no point is showing what it looks like on the outside. Instead here is a pic of the inside. I used to have a dedicated gaming PC plus a separate NAS but even with dual Gb from both to my switch, the performance just wasn't where I wanted it. So I decided to combine the two computers into one monster machine. I think it is one of very few water cooled Norco cases out there.
Here are some specs:

Case: Norco 4224 w/ 120mm fan wall (Stock fans too quiet. Replaced with 140CFM 55db fans)

Cooling:
Radiator: Heater core from 1977 Pontiac Bonneville. Notice the shroud between the radiator and the fan wall.
Pump: Random pump meant for backyard pond. 14ft head. Installed where a 80mm rear fan normally goes.
Reservoir: T Virus Liquid Fusion

Sorry for the bad pic. I found it hard to get a pic that was dark enough to show the res glow it's creepy blue but bright enough for you to see anything else. The blue stuff you see on the left is AC filter material that I use between the 120mmx38mm fans and the backplanes. This, combined with a positive pressure case, prevents any dust from reaching the radiator or the inside of the case.

 
so you have your daily machine and NAS in the norco case? I thought about going this route also but had different thoughts and opinions. I have three top cases, the norco 3216 (NAS current) Coolermaster 690 II (daily driver, movie/music ripping machine) and a RC-590 case.

Its not that I don't like the 3216, but in my house its just "too big/much" I also have it in my basement that my kids have taken over so its always in danger of being used as a tea table, and that concerns me. So that is why I have thought about combining them again. I'm pretty much the only one that gets on the daily machine, with the wife checking email and surfing every so often.

I purchased the 690 so that I could add extra hard drives (this one comes with 6 drive caddys) and to move the drive caddy from the 590 to the 690.

Right now I just can't see the point of having a NAS that does nothing but serve movies and music. That could be my main system, save me some on the power bill.

- Space for 6 drives. I'm going to move from that loud 320GB SATA disk to 2x 2.5" laptop disks for OS and home dirs.
- Lots of cooling capacity
- Not too expensive

My number 1 priority is ease of drive removal. I had an Aopen H600B before this and to remove a disk you had to remove the whole cage. A hotswap is ideal, but this is fine too. Just slide the sucker out ;).

You should turn those drives around and put the SATA power and data cables in from behind. Much less chance of pulling on something when tinkering around in the system with the cables out of the way, also makes it neater for when you post it to the rate my cables thread :)

For me (work purchases) I can not purchase anything from norco since the approved vendor does not carry norco products. Also I do not have a server rack (tape archive is on the network rack) or a place to put one. My servers are all full tower cases. I did have my hands on a mobile rack at one point but it got sent back when the project ended..

Also I really do like the build quality of the SM 5in3 cages. I have around 8 of these now and I will certainly get more. My only complaint is they do not take SFF-8087 connectors however I admit that would not work well with 5 drives..

Lot more than that, actually. That was just one array and probably just for the mainframe at that. Open Systems were moved off on their own EMC and NetApp arrays.

As for home... got nothing right now. Just my desktop and laptop. I've got a spare PC in need of a graphics card that I'll probably throw some drives in for S11 Express with ZFS for iSCSI to some Linux and Solaris VM's.

Later, though. The House Finance Committee has vetoed all technology purchases for the remainder of the year at least :(
 
I have the same case as raiderj's although my setup is not as clean as his.

It truly is a great case and really quiet. I agree with raiderj on the annoying blue LEDs though. :p

Mine runs Ubuntu 10.04 Server with a mdadm raid5 ext4 array. It's been running for months now and it can saturate a gigabit link easy so I'm quite happy with the stability and performance. The drives run really cool in it too :

we're going to be using a custom rolled version of Fedora Core 8 x64 that we've built an iSCSI stack for and extended volume support for DRBD to handle the large volumes. If interested in the software I can provide further information.

We're using this as a Replication Target for some Legacy EMC equipment and a Dell Equalogic unit that we'll be replacing with these configurations here over the next few months.

Would it be possible to use SAS backplanes instead of SATA multiplex that you are using?

If I could find one, I would love to use that instead so I can get away from these Syba SATA controllers and keep the data rate higher as with Port Multipliers you get screwed pretty bad with cutting the drive storage speed down quite abit.

Only downside I see about that is the clearance between the backplane and the bottom of the case....
