Possibly dumb resolution question

Okay forgive me if this is dumb, but i just wanna make sure im thinking correctly here. Since video cards are normally benchmarked at 1920x1200 or higher, it is safe to assume that hooking up a video card to a 1080p monitor and running it at 1080p will be fine/smooth/playable? Or is there something different? Or (this one is probably correct) im totally over thinking this? The card im thinking of getting is a 5770 1gb.

Well, if you mean Aero and video play, then it will be smooth. If you mean games then it's another story.

well i plan on gaming...doing some WoW and bioshock2 and whatever else i find interesting...can u help me understand o uber one....

Playing at 1920x1080 is basically identical to 1920x1200 yes.

If a benchmark shows that a game runs smoothly at 1200 then it will be smooth at 1080.

haha, well a 5770 should be fine for that resolution (somehow missed that the first time). To find a card for your resolution it's mostly just research on different tech websites.
Crysis: WARHEAD
Far Cry 2

Guru3D VGA charts are probably one of the best resources, and these are run at 1920x1200 so you'll get a little bit faster performance than this.

Its actually debatable, the extra width that you get from the wider FoV in 16:9 causes a small performance drop (more stuff is rendered)

So it should end up being nearly identical performance.

That's your answer. Usually, I look at the 1920x1200 benchies and see what they run at. Close enough for my 1080p monitor. At least I have an idea within 5-10%.

Yeah same here. I even get 1920x1200 wallpapers sometimes and center them to fit the screen. But to be honest, performance will always be a little different from system to system (with the same graphics card) because of all the different hardware combinations. But regardless, 1920x1200 benchies are a good idea of how 1080p would run.
