Possible Temp Issues

My curiousity has led me to making this thread, as I fear not doing so may possibly damage my computer. So here's the issue: After gaming for about 5 hours or so the back of my computer gets, well, hot. The GPU (Sapphire HD 5970) exaust vent is hot to the touch to the point that it would actually burn your finger slightly if you left it there for 30sec-1minute (no, I haven't tried). Now I'm wondering if this is normal or not. Should I be thinking of water cooling? I honestly hope not as I'm terrified of the idea and concept.

BONUS QUESTIONS! (I apologies)

Can someone link to me a GPU temp reader that's not Everest? I currently use a fan controller that has little temp node wires that I have taped (provided) directly to the hardware. The one taped to the side of my GPU reads at around 52c, to sometimes even 63c after a few hours of usage. Not sure if that's reliable, but I thought I might as well keep you guys informed.

Are these normal CPU temps for prolonged gaming sessions?

52c, 50c, 54c, 50c
And max currently stated on Real Temp for my I7 920: 62c, 59c, 61c, 56c

Any advice would be appreciated greatly, thank you.

50c isn't that hot.

What does the temp gauge say within the ATI Catylst Control Panel? Does is sync with your external probe? I would guess that the internal video card temps are higher.

Depending on what type of case and fans you are using, you could potentially exhaust some of the case heat to lower the internal ambient temps which would in turn possibly lower the video card temps.

Actually those temps look very good, my 5870s hit 85C under load while playing BC2.
Definitely check out ATI Overdrives control panel for temps.

Overdrive says it's at 46c at idle while the probe says 38c (uh-oh). For some reason it's reading the fan speed on the card at 25%, what's going on? Also, the entire overdrive section is blanked out and unaccessible by any means. How do I enable that section so that I may speed up the fan to a more reasonable speed?

lol my top 5870 idles at around 50c..... hits almost 90 under some heavy gaming sessions. usually hovers in the 75-80 range for most games.

the temp nodes you are using are way external and are pretty much useless for monitoring gpu core temps. hardware monitor will give you a pretty accurate gpu temp, as well as logging min and max values so i use that for testing. everest keeps locking up my system so i dont use it anymore.

Those temps are ice cold for that card and cpu. You should be proud!

If you tick the 'Enable ATI Overdrive' option in the Overdrive tab you can manually adjust the fan speed and clock settings. Keep in mind, you are looking at these settings under idle conditions.

Under 99% activity for about 30 minutes in Battlefield Bad Company 2 it hits 77c max, is that normal and acceptable? (i.e. not going to damage the computer in any way), Furthermore the fan only raises up to 33%. Is this a joke? Nothing is "accessible" on the overdrive screen.

Any suggestions?

Edit: Nevermind I just clicked the lock icon and it unlocked it. I hope I don't damage the GPU by messing with the fan control. Then again, I can't see the harm in leaving it on max when taxing the card.

im assuming the 77c max temp you are getting is feedback from those temp sensors you put on?? or is this a reading from something else? if its the outside temp probes you can be damn sure the true gpu temp is higher than that.

It you are worried increase the fan speed till it becomes to loud.

Not really sure why, but even if I increase it by 1% in speed, it seems to go straight to max speed and sounds similar to a jet engine...

The 77c is off of ATI Overdrive, and if that's true is that within an acceptable temp range limit? Also if there is an acceptable range, what would be the max on that, and how long could I leave the computer running at 77c or the "max"?

youd be better off to run "hardware monitor" and keep it on while you game. it will record the min and max values, so youll know for sure whats going on. as far a si know overdrive is just reporting the current temp. the temp of the card will fall fast when you stop gaming so closing a game and jumping into overdrive isnt too accurate. now IF you could possibly be maxing your card out at 77c, then you have great temps. like i said when im playing bfbc2 my cards are up in the 85-90c range, mind you playing at 6048x1200 does put some stress on them:)

77C is perfectly fine for 5970 load temp. Just be glad it's not like a GTX480 and hitting 90C+. I don't think you should be worried at all.

Alright thanks for the info guys, I've sort of stopped gaming all together because of the fear of wrecking my new rig. Glad that's out of the way, though. As for accurate readings, Rogue. I have the overdrive window up in the background while gaming, after playing for a little while I quickly hit alt+enter and have the game windowed to see the temps right at that moment, and the highest I've seen thus far is 77c. Unlike when I exit the game and the temps instantly drop to around 65-68c.

By the way, what's that hardware monitor program you were talking about. Where could I download that. (I feel as if though that has to be the noobest question ever asked, but yeah.)

i was very unsure about my gpu as well (xfx 5770) and i ended up contacting xfx to ask the techs about it and on two occasions they gave me a range of temps and it seems i was worried about nothing really. now i know ur card isnt a 5770 but if you're still unsure despite what you've found or read, maybe try contacting sapphire tech/engineering team to ask.

and also +1 @ those are pretty cool temps for ur card at load.

Seriously, check out afterburner. It's specifically designed for 5970s by MSI. It works great with my XFX card. Details: http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/overview.htm

Also, regarding the heat thing, remember these cards are sitting at 300W full load STOCK. If you are overclocking it's pulling more than that. Displacing that much heat will make things toasty. My card does the same thing, and to be honest, I'm amazed at how well it vents it out. Running the MSI Afterburner included stress tests it sits at 78-79C. I'm running at 885/1275 1.1625V, and a friend of mine runs his at 905/1300 and is pulling similar temps.

90C or higher is where you should be worried.

Just google MSI afterburner. I use it as well. It shows a time graph of temperature along with other stats. It'll keep track of 'max' temperature. The ghetto alt tab check will always be a few degrees cooler than actual load temps since in that split second the card stops pumping graphics. GPU's can take far more heat than you think. I'm actually surprised a 5970 is loading *only* at 77 C. Look up reviews, including the ones at [H], it's nothing out of the ordinary.

These temps are pretty fine, you're worrying over nothing. I mean these cards can go 100c+...And 50c for your CPU is also WAAAY far for dangerous\hot\bad...
