Likely , what motherboard can you reliably buy for that $88 CPU that you KNOW will work out of the box? When I did a build recently, I really wanted to use to i5-9400F, because it's a great price. But you are limited to Z390 if you want a board that you know will work. The lesser tiers are compatible, but will likely need a BIOS update and your screwed if you don't have a compatible CPU to boot the motherboard. People buying a $88 CPU probably aren't look at $125+ motherboards.

microcenters usually pretty good about going through all their boards and updating the bios then put stickers on them so you know which cpu's are supported. they do it with a lot of the amd 400 series and 300 series boards to support zen 2 cpu's. so i wouldn't be surprised if they've done the same to support the F series chips.

That's possible, though Microcenter has usually been very friendly with AMD over the years. This was at the Dallas store and the rep there didn't recommend I go with the 9400F if I wasn't looking at the Z390 boards. He said the technicians could check it and do the update, but it would be a paid service. That's just 1 sales rep though....but about 2 months previous I had a similar issue trying to get a AMD Athlon 200GE working on B350 board I got from there. It didn't work, so I exchanged it for a B450. I didn't want to deal with that hassle again.

I will look for the stickers though in the future, I had not noticed those in the past.

I built an i3 9100 with an MSI B360 about 4 months ago (open box motherboard) and it worked just fine. This was from Micro Center. Not sure if they updated the BIOS after it was returned.

I can see a regular i3 9100 with the IGP being worth it, but without one just kills the cost as you're going to spend an extra $45 (based on the MC prices) to get a comparable video card to the Intel IGP. Unless you have a used card lying around or something.
