Man, I just ran 3dMark '05 on a system I expected to get 'decent' results and was floored with the results.

308

No, I didn't miss a zero! heh

Anyway, I set the system up for my sister to use for light gaming and internet/email out of spare parts. here is the list:

Abit IS7-E
Pentium 4 2.4b (clocked at 3.0ghz, running 1:1 with memory)
2x 512mb Corsair XMS DDR400 (running dual-channel at 2-3-3-6)
Geforce FX 5500 AGP 8x (256mb, clocked up to 290/450)
80gb WD HDD (8mb - 7200rpm)
On-board AC'97 sound

I bolded what I think may be the problem, but I just don't buy it. Is the FX5500 really that bad!? It's relatively recent, decent clock speeds for it's day, 256mb ram (granted, at 128bit). I think I grabbed it for a little under ~$100 several months back, which isn't to cheap for such an aged card.

Or, is there something else likely to be wrong? Drivers are a non-issue- chipset, graphics, audio, lan all present and using the latest versions. I have reinstalled Windows XP SP2 (fully patched) after my first install because I thought something may have been borked along the line, but I am still looking at no performance.

Sorry, it's sort of a rant, video card, and general question all at once :)

yeah not much better than the 5200. It's a dx9 card though so that's was its selling point.

Hmmm, what a POS :) Looks like it's going into the next budget build I do for someone. Sorry I didn't check that list, would ahve saved some time.

Now, I have to decide rather I want to toss my old Ti 4200 back in there for a performance boost (it hurt to type that) or keep the 5500 going for DX9 support. Maybe I will bring the old card out of retirement, it was pretty awesome and overclocks great (aftermarket HSF/AC5).

I'd suggest you sell the ti4200 and fx 5200 and buy a Radeon 9800 Pro or geforce 6600 GT. On the for sale/trade section of these forums u can pick up a Radeon 9800 Pro for $80 shipped. That's a darn good deal.

The entire nvidia FX series was HORRIBLE. Its nvidias equivalent of windows me;) Radeon 9800 is an excelelnt video card for lower end systems, and it can run any game to date without too many problems. The guy before said 80 for a 9800, BUY IT NOW! lol

yeah, I third that....

...or your best option w/the amount of money you can get are....

9700
9800
n/6600

You're looking at low to mid 2000s (3dmark05) and higher with these cards.

The 9700 can clock like the 9800 and can be had pretty darn cheap. I bet you could sell your ti series card and with a few dollars on top, get that.

Look at the 5900 series cards too...they were pretty decent and comperable to the 9800 series cards in their time.

For that time period, I think it would be smart to stick with ATI because they really were superior to anything nvidia had to offer at the time. If overclocking is an option, what he said is very true.

I dunno, my FX 5700 Ran fine right up to BF2, HL2, and Doom 3. 3DMark05 is made specifically for the newer cards. Switching from FX 5700 to the 6600, both AGP versions, 3DMark05 jumped from around 400 to 2200 and I still think I could probably get this 6600 a higher score with some fine-tuning.
