Poor FPS w/ X800 XT ...

I'm 99% positive it's that. HSF: I like that zalman one, the big flower looking one. :)

Not great for overclocking without a bigger fan though.

The X800 Pro I had was a healthy increase over both the 9700 pro and 9800 pro I had, so I imagine a 16 pipe XT is even better. User error I say. :)

Wrong. Read the thread.

got 130 1280x1024 everything maxed 6xAA 8xAF

dude AA at 6x looks like crap on nvidia cards....actually at 6x, it doesnt even look like AA is being used. thats why u got a high score.

Just read the entire thread - I'd put good money on the heatsink too.
One of my mates (totally clueless but went ahead and tried anyway) tried to build his own high-spec P4 machine and was wondering why he got no performance out of it.
I opened it up to have a look while it was running and he was running it with the heatsink attached but hadn't connected the fan cos he "didn't think it was that important"...... !!

Anyway, stupidity aside, his was exhibiting similar symptoms to yours, noteably that changing display settings didn't seem to have any real impact on performance because the game was being CPU limited by his massively underclocked and undervolted P4.

Good luck with the reseat.

OT a bit regarding the muppet above going on about nVidia AA, i'll second Darth_Fluffy.
Yes I and many others will acknowledge that nVidia's AA isn't as smooth as ATI's is at the moment, but framerates? wtf?
Even if your claims are correct and you can't see it, the algorithm is still running so it's still impacting framerates in the same way as on the ATI cards. And if you can't tell the difference between no AA and 6xAA then you either need an eyecheck or you're running at such a high res you're wasting clock cycles on any AA over 2x anyway.

Maybe it's a defective card, and it doesn't switch from default/low performance 2D mode to the 3D clocks?

I was not being a smart ass, thank you very much, I was saying we found something that is far more likely (with a CPU running at only a percentage of what it should, which is guaranteed at 200f, you're gonna have to have poor performance). Pursue the errors before you go after theories. There was an overheat error, fix that, then think about the rest.

EDIT: And if 2k IS the problem, then it's time to upgrade. 2k was never designed to be a home-use OS. There are tons of 2k related issues with games, so use something different.

WHAT !?!?! LOL -- I have the x800pro ONLY and I run 1280x1024 6xAA 16xFA with everything maxxed and I still get 86fps.....I have no clue what your talking about.

Punctuation makes your post coherent, understandable, and actually valid as an argument, statement, or postulation.

As it is, it's merely letters on the screen, and is as easily dismissed.

6xAA in CS:S looks like shit. looks like AA aint even working when u set it on 6aa

You were fine till the edit. Typing right (and not like a 9 year old on AIM) doesn't take any more effort than not typing right. It's a useful skill to have, so you don't look like a fool to other people.

And I'm hardly pale... Pasty white maybe, but not pale. Good ol' Irish blood :)

He is an idiot? You misspelled Sarcasm. Lets just all chill out here.

All we wanted to say, was use some punctuation. By doing so, you make it much easier for us to all understand you. Only children would quarrel over such a simple request.

Why do people often whip out the whole nerd comment? Effective communication is a very positive trait, not a "nerdy" one.

Now see even though this guy corrected me like the one guy I quoted, I like his response. Now i wouldn't call you a nerd bro, just that the other guy seemed as if he was trying to sound so much better or something, but hey what the heck I love you all, were like brothers, we fight yea but we get over it. Well back to the reason why this thread was made. :D

Yes if it actually wasn't working then that would give higher rates, but assuming you've forced it to 6x in the drivers then it will be working.

I think someone already touched base on this, but some people's spelling is just atrocious.

Ah come on man its a forum, everything has its time and Place. ;)

This thread is cracking me up. I didn't mean to start a war here.

I bought some Arctic Silver 5 and I think I applied too much the first time around. My temprature was already at 195 upon bootup. I'm going to reapply a tiny rice-sized amount tonight after reading up on it and see how that goes.

I'm wondering if its just going to be the stock HSF at that point if this doesn't work. I mean is there a chance it could be the motherboard making it get that hot, or does everything still point towards the HSF?

I'll post later with updates. Keep the thread bumped with flames :)

I rarely pick on others for grammar or spelling mistakes. It's not that I don't care; it's just that I'm not going to waste my time to inform people that they have a lack of rhetorical skill and/or character. Oh, and you know what they say about nerds: be nice to them, one will probably be your boss someday.

Digital: Less is more when it comes to thermal paste. Just enough to leave a thin coating. Plus, unless you've got big problems, each time you reapply things will get worse. So once the temps are back down, don't second guess your application job.

Also, make sure the HSF is seated properly. I did a 2.4A build for a friend, and even though the HSF was down and locked, one of the corners was caught on the corner of the retention mechanism and it was only touching about 1/8 of the CPU.

So could you explain how that isn't saying that he's getting good frame rates because the AA looks crap?

uhh maybne thats why..its probably not working. have u tried it yet? go and set 6AA in CS:s and tell me how it looks. then go and set it at 2AA and tell me what looks better.

I smell a perfectionist( Darth_Fluffy)= what a fruit like name.Anyways, I'm really not against Nvidia like you guys think, its just that you Nvidiots glorify this SLI crap like crazy, why did Nvidia have to cheat.\.

If you havent noticed, sli increases performance by 75% or more over a single card setup. Read up a bit. And how is linking two cards together cheating? I smell ATI !!!!!!.

Heh, the flaming is getting quite amusing.
Lets leave the nerding out of it huh guys? I mean lets face it, the fact that we've got as far as posting on a forum (especially a techy forum) makes us nerds in the eyes of most of the population.

Having said that, I'll happily support flaming the guys posting like they're on AIM (hi there AlexStenka)! I can just about understand why you talk like that over I/M, it's faster, needs less typing, and keeps the conversation up to a decent speed especially if you can't touch type, and most of us do it on our mobiles anyway when texting.
But if I'm using a system where it can be avoided I don't. I wouldn't "talk text" to someone in a voice conversation on my mobile, so why would I "type AIM" here? It's not like you have to get a reply in before the rush. I can't see my girlfriend being that impressed if I finished a phone call with "k c u laters x". Well ok, she'd laugh, but thats beside the point!
Sorry, but not only does it make you hard to understand - why should I bother wading through a forest of shortcuts when most of it turns out to be insults anyway - but it really does make you look immature as well. The standard "fuck you" response (sorry, that'd be "fuk U!!!!!1223") doesn't exactly do much to get rid of that perception - it's hardly a thought provoking answer now is it?
If you want to represent yourself to the online community as a prepubescent 10 year old then don't be surprised when you get treated like one. If you're doing it for entertainment can I suggest you quit staring at a screen for some text to come up and find something a bit more stimulating? Me, I'm online because that's my job - and a nicely paid job it is too.

Just my £0.02 to bump the thread and keep digital_chaos laughing :)

I'm just trying to find ways to keep myself entertainted at work and thought of another question.

Seeing as how my CPU is running at 200F or so, at what temparature does the throttling kick in and say "you're only gonna get this much performance".

Another way of putting it is, at what temparature am I gonna have to get the P4 down to where I can look at getting the appropriate FPS and performance out of it?

Hmm good question.
If you've got time at work and your boss isn't looking, the specs will be on the Intel site somewhere.

As a self-confessed AMD zealot I can't tell you numbers, hell I don't even know numbers for the Athlon chips.
However, I've heard (not from any source that would be considered reliable, mind) that 60 degrees centigrade is the first switch-point for Athlon64 chips. I would expect the Intel to be higher than that as they run much hotter than the AMD chips anyway.

However, silicon loses it's semiconductor properties at around 90C so it'll be somewhere before that.
AMD rated their AthlonXP chips for stable operation up to 75C with a permanent damage threshold of 85C. My XP2000+ used to regularly hit 73C and was never unstable.

Sorry for the metric units but it's too late for me to start conversions.

I hope my thread is relevent unlike many of these others... Just look at the rig in my sig. The X800 isn't PCI-E though. I had a similar problem where my card preformance was worse than a 9800 PRO. Turned out that my CPU O/C was slowing my card down, I don't know if that's what AGP lock is for, to not let the OC hurt your preformance, but I have been running at stock since so I don't know. Sooo if you were OCing before try all stock, hope this helps

Alright brahs. Re-seated the HSF and applied a thin coating of Arctic Silver. From 200F to 145F. Much better, but still too hot for my tastes.

The real test though, ran CS:S stress test, over 100fps :)

So there ya have that, it was that HSF all along. I think I'll take a look into some watercooling due to my roomy case just to get it down hopefully to 120F or so idle.

Thanks for all the suggestions and to lopoetve for confirming the problem. Yay!

6xAA for Nvidia cards is a legacy leftover from the GF2 days. It does not do as much work or look as nice as the current 4xAA. That's why it's not officialy supported in the forcewares and why people forcing 6xAA are getting inflated numbers.

62 c is still VERY close to the clock throttle point of 70c. You'll wanna watch that... what cooler you got on there? Airflow? Overclocked?

EDIT: Oh, and you're welcome :) Glad to help.

AGP lock prevents overclocking the fsb from taking the AGP/PCI bus out of spec (66/33mhz, respectively). It helps stability mostly.

70c for the Intels, or it was. The prescott is different, either 80 or 60, I don't remember. You need more airflow and a better HSF.

I am running a Cool Master Hyper 6 heatsink on a Athlon 64 3400 CPU and my temps never go higher than 39C when running any game, just a recommendation this has been the best performing heatsink I have used and it works on P4 processors as well.

Zalman 7000A-Cu

Wonderful wonderful HSF. I have one on my P4 3.0C at 1200rpm and it doesn't go over 50C load. No fan is over 1300 in the computer heh.

I have one in my AthlonXP 1800+ at 1200 rpm also in a Antec Minuet which is a hot case, it suffices well though, and very very quiet.

You can run it at the max which is 2400 or 2500rpm and is audible, but not annoying. And at that speed it'll run quite cool.
