- Yes, unfortunately more than I wish they did.

-Not applicable

-No, although only ever used one and not for all that long.

Drives? Hell yes, as much if not more than hard drives.. the actual disk itself, not unless someone beat the crap out of it with a metal brush or brillo pad.

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?

Yes, sadly.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?

Regimen? No, just whenever I think about it and have the time (not all that often).

I weekly image/update my drives.
 
1. No, never had a HD fail on me. Well not mechanically. Only things like bad sectors and viruses, things that can be fixed using low level formattting.

2. Yes. Lexar jumpdrive 256mb, capacitor inside was loose.

3. Yes, my current one works via USB, but fails when using Firewire. It's a known problem with the chipset and not the harddrive itself.

4. Yes, DVD-r and CD-R, I've had a few discs that stopped working after only a year. Some non label brands. The CD-Rs i had that were silver started turning yellow.

5. Yes, I have had some, but was able to recover 99% of my files.

6. Yes, sometimes i will save an image of my HD after a fresh winxp install and some tweaks via Norton Ghost. But only about once a year. I also back up my 40 gb of precious Alizee videos on my external 80gb hard drive.

Backup every month although I've never had an HDD crash on me.

Had a Thumb drive fail on me at work ..could no longer access the drive

Yes ..some coaster burns , some just from getting to scratched up (if those count)

Yes ..deleted folder with stuff I actually wanted to keep inside , but had already added more data to drive and ran defrag before attempting to recover ..although I could see the file by name , it wasnt all there anymore

Yes (kinda) ...spare hard drive with my "essentials" on and I also back-up stuff to CD's/DVD's from time to time

Yes. Back when I was a starving college student I bought a brand new top of the line 40 gig 7200 rpm Western Digital WD400. Two weeks later windows froze while I typing something. I rebooted and it did it again. When I rebooted a 3rd time I just heard "click click click click click".

The store wouldn't take it back so I was HDless for the entire RMA process :(

When I got my first CD burner I spent ~5 hours backing up stuff, I have never had to use any of those disks. I also did something similar when I got my first DVD writer.

5. Deleted half of "Band of Brothers" through Nero (could not recover)
6. DVD burner for non replaceable data (personal photos, pr0n)

hi,

as im a storage engineer i have some stories about failing harddrives...but its high end stuff, scsi and fc interface....but manufacturers are the same: mainly hitachi (ibm) and seagate

Only for specific files not whole partitions. Documents, email and photos of my son are all backed up to my server which is about have a 250GB RAID1 array added since the aforementioned failure.

please bear in mind this is based per year for 150+ users over about 4 years

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you? Yes ... quite a few, actually. It's mostly been IBM and Maxtor, but I've seen all (current) manufacturers' hard drives fail.
2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you? (if you've used these) Yes, computers just stopped recognizing the drive.
3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you? (if you've used these) Yes, of course.
4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you? Yes ... especially OptoRite drives. I hope I never have to go near one of those again :D
5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable? No ... if I delete a file, then I don't want it.
6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen? Most of the data I have on my hard drives can easily be replaced (i.e. re-rip CDs, reinstall applications), but I burn the data that can't to a DVD-R once a week.

1. Yes had 2 Maxtors and 1 Western Digital fail on me.

2. Had a Samsung CD writer/ DVD reader make some corrupted cds a few times.

6. I now am using RAID5 on my main OS installation, and burn many dvds when my storage drive becomes too full

Funny: I'm making a wind chime out of about 500gb of HD platters which have failed on me. 4 of 5 of those drives were Western Digital!
