5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable? I don't think so.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen? I usually only back up before formatting. I just burn downloaded stuff that I want to keep to a DVD. There's not much on my rig that I'm really worried about. My wife does a lot of photos. She doesn't back up unless Windows is hosed. She got pretty worried a few times when the burning software wouldn't work. Each time, I was able to suck the photos over to my rig via LAN.

1. Yes, 4 in 6 months - screw Maxtor and their RMA drives

2. N/A
3. No
4. Yes, all the time
5. A whole partition once.
6. No, but I use multiple computers so there are copies of all my important work across many hard drives in many machines. It's a kind of accidental backup, and it works well enough for me.

Yes, on some of my computers. I keep my webserver backed up (every 15 days) to the point where I can recover it with about 4 hours worth of work. (I wish I could keep a full backup, but I don't have the diskspace.) My main workstation is not backed up at all. (again, I don't have the diskspace) I am, however, hoping to build a large RAID array within the next few months to solve this problem :)

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?

Some bad sectors on my Windows ME hard drive, I lived with it until I upgraded.

2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you? (if you've used these)

My mom has had two fail on her from PNY.

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?

Yes. But mostly because the way they were stored and their age.

I have never accidentily deleted a file.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?

I used to backup my music, but now all my music is also on my 30GB Creative MP3 player.

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?

1. Yes, more than one. WDs, Seagates, Maxtors (and oddly in that order)

2. Yes, those Maxel color CD-Rs from the late 90's... I've had a lot of those fail.

5. Yup, Windows did a consistency check and blotted out a nearly half-full 250GB backup drive on startup once. That didn't come back. I didn't try very hard either. I have most, if not all of it on a drive that isn't in a system, and away from all sources of heat, water, explosion, and so forth.

6. When the drive gets full. This is not a good regimen, but it is a regimen. (see answer 5)

Other helpful info maybe? : 1 WD 74Gb Raptor, 2 WD 80 gig JB's, 1 WD 160 JB. The ATA's all have SATA bridge chips on them.

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?
Yes, a WD 80gb drive that got the click of death.
4. Yes, but always during burning, since I have it verify the data. But I haven't checked any of my cds from 2+ years ago....
6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?[/QUOTE]
Yes, I burn all my important files on onto cds and dvds every month. All my music that I have ripped off of cds that I own are also saved on both cds and dvds in mp3 format. Also I have my main drive in a raid 1 array. I know that isn't really back up, but it does protect from 1 of the drives dying.
