Does your fan (or will your fan if you haven't built your system yet!) push air down into the heatsink or pull air away from the heatsink?

I understand this issue is not clear cut in general but I believe for a given heatsink one way will prevail over the other.

With my past ThermalRight SLK-947U I pulled air away. Just want to poll around and see what the XP-90 folk have done and if you've tried both ways to just see which is the best route.

I tried both, pulling was 1 degree or so warmer for me than pushing.

Run 1 front 80mm intake, 1 side 80mm intake, and 2 80mm exhaust fans in the back.
 
I've got a pusher, haven't tried pulling and I'm not really planning to.
 
I am using the thermalright sp-94, I have a 90mm fan blowing into the heatsink. This is the better way to go I think. My idle and load temps are 84F and 104F respectively. See sig for specs.
 
xp-120 with panaflo pushing onto the heat sink... temps were about the same either way.. looks better in this direction
 
I have that heatsink running on one of my a64 machines, and it worked better pushing. Also watch the orinatation (SP) of the heatpipes, it makes a big difference.
 
Tried both. In my case in warmer room temps, you should pull. With a cooler room, you should push.
 
I have always been a pusher.....Just made sense to me...
 
i push on mine, but haven't tried pulling yet. pretty cool of thermalright to make it so easy to switch fan directions though. i'm just lazy :p

btw, in what direction should the heatpipes be oriented? mine is on the side.. i'm not sure if it would make a difference if i just switched it over from right to left.
 
I have the air pushing towards. I also have a question...which direction did you put the heatsink on? I put the heatpipes to the right, so I can have easier access to the memory sticks which were hidden under the fins when placed the other way. Do you think it makes a difference in which way you install it?
 
well for me i thought there was only 1 direction to install it in.. but i heard that gravity is really crucial to the effectiveness of the heatpipes..

nope...there is definitely two ways. Most of the pictures that I see have it installed with the fins over the memory. I have it installed where the heatpipes face the memory. I'm not really complaining, since I'm getting pretty good temps though.
 
pushing...never tried pulling on any of my set ups...some people seem to have some success with that set up, tho....
 
I've got the XP-120. Tried both, pushing was a few degrees cooler than pulling. I'm stickeing with pushing because I have a 90mm fan on the side of my case and don't want this huge 120mm fan pushing air into the path of the 90mm's airflow.
 
I think it'll depend more on the airflow within your case than the HS itself (at 'least with the XP-90/120 which are very flexible in this regard)... Originally I was gonna do pull 'cuz I figured it'd work better with the case and mobo I was gonna get (the Neo2's socket is more towards the middle of the board and the case had a top fan).

I bought an ASUS A8V (Neo2 outta stock) and a Super Lanboy instead since it was cheap and local though, given how close the rear 120mm fan is to the XP-90's side I went with push merely because I thought it'd be more in agreement with the airflow of the case fan. Haven't tried pull though but I might when I'm bored...

I oriented the pipes towards the dimms as well, just looks cooler and again, I figured as far as airflow goes it'd help more if my rear 120mm was sucking air out from under the fins. I also figured it'd help if the 92mm fan was blowing air thru the fins and unto the MOSFETs. I actually clipped it on wrong side (longer side of the base) first and I dunno why I forced it 'till it locked, I'm surprised I didn't damage something. :rolleyes:

SPCR did some testing and there wasn't any difference in having the pipes to the sides or down, I think the only thing they don't recommend was having them face up? Dunno, might wanna look up the review, they went at lenght about this.

Funny, my thinking was the exact OPPOSITE of yours, and I have the same motherboard and case as you. :p

But my temps were the same either way. Only difference with me was that I used a 120mm fan on the XP-90, it made less noise than the 92mm Panaflo and cooled a little better.
 
I guess I'm one of the few... the brave... the pullers. :p

I wanted mine to pull because that way it can exhaust the hotter air out the 80mm fan in the back of the case (which is right next to the CPU fan) instead of recirculating hot air inside the case. Unfortunately it's pulling some hot air up from the MOSFETs and RAM so I can understand why that would make the CPU temps go up a degree or two. I think overall this is a better solution for me because even though my CPU runs slightly hotter, my overall case temps are better managed due to the more efficient airflow inside the case. That way I don't have to keep my case fans at full speed in order to keep my system cool.

Well, that's the theory anyway.

I've got my 3200+ A64 overclocked to 2.4GHz and it maxes out at 51C under load, with 31C case temp. I can live with that.

Actually I'm a puller, too. :D
 
In some cases pulling makes for better performance. It's not like its difficult to reverse the fans on these XP's.

I have exhaust fans right next to the HSF pretty much, so I figure Im getting the best of both worlds. Case temp stays at 26C at idle, PSU at 28.5C, Abit board reads 36.5-37C idle temp but I believe you can knock 10C off of this.
