Get your Tinfoil hats on boys and girls. The Greater Manchester Police Department has started using a Facebook application to help it collect evidence.

The application delivers a real-time feed of police news and appeals for information. Next to that content is a feature to share a particular story with other friends in a person's network, as well as post comments.

The Tinfoil hat comes into play because adding the application shares your personal data with the Police as well.
 
That seems the best way to destroy a web site. I would think people will just find another site to do what they do. I doent think it is such a bad idea catching people who post their crimes.
As far as the tinfoil hats are concerned we have been needed them for some time now. Do you really think that someone in either the UK or USA governments doent already monitor everything that happens on the internet aswell as every other form of comunications. The only thing slowing them down now are the people proccessing the information. Soon they will have programs to replace the slow and unproductive human.
 
The really effed up part of this is that any information on your profile would probably become admissible evidence in court.
 
That guy who cut me off today on the free way must be a terrorist I'll go report him for several of the unsolved murders...
 
It's a social network. By putting your information on the web, you agree to let the world know about it. It's your own damn fault if you put up criminal information. Not much different from posting Taco Bell (or whatever that restaurant was called) scams on YouTube.
 
I don't get why people would willingly help the police when they would arrest you in a heartbeat.
 
yea, if you need to hide evidence or anything of the sort, dont put it up. although i agree it could be a hassle to worry about everything you do scoially online for police to be watching.

dont you have to add the application for them to access info right?
 
This seems to be just a glorified tip line that most police departments have. Instead of calling the tip line you install this app so that you can rat out on someone. Ya, the coming of the snitch society is almost here.

On a side note, the crook in the story who robbed a betting shop with an axe could have been stopped if the gun laws were relaxed in the UK. The betting shop would have been able to defend themselves.

Seriously though, it's a problem because the agreement is with you and an application, not you and the police. If you have a private profile (friends only) and sign up for an application, it is a little odd that your profile then becomes public information. Now maybe next time you can hold back the condescension until you really think about the issue.

Actually it is, because Facebook attempts to guarantee privacy, and, if you set stringent privacy restrictions, then you can use Facebook, essentially, as a way to share photos and information with friends ONLY.

If you post a PUBLIC video on Youtube, that is an entirely different beast. This is unless, of course, you choose to assume that you're making a public facebook profile, in which case, you're begging the question and the point is moot.

Do you honestly believe the stuff you post or do you just steal it all from slashdot and regurgitate it here with no merit?

I meant public profile of course. I hope that's what the police planned on doing, only targetting public information. They could access private too, but as with all things private, they would need a warrant.
 
wouldnt anything on the page be able to fall into the "it was just a joke" category? I mean nobody says the info on my page is factual...

That's what I meant is scary. They wouldn't need a warrant, because technically you agreed to give them the information. Any information on your profile would be shared with them. They can already get the public information, so that part really isn't anything new.

As for the "just a joke" argument... you might be able to pull it off, but I doubt it. If it were possible then you'd have everyone that ever got wire-tapped saying "it was just a joke."

Ya, blame the snitch instead of the criminal who created the need for the snitch in the first place. Protect the rights of the criminal instead of the right to live without fear for the innocent. Ya, some people are morally bankrupt.
