Pointsec: Hardware + Software or Just Software

I've got a laptop that needs OS updating. It has pointsec on it. My impression is that pointsec is both hard and software level encryption so it would have to be unencrypted before itsOS can be updated. Others are telling me it's just software level, I can format and proceed. Anyone have personal experience with this?
 
I've used pointsec, if you don't need any data off the hard drive you can wipe and reinstall the OS.
 
Ive used pointsec as well.

its encrypted until the OS boots up (ie you cant read the HDD from a PE flash drive or Linux live CD, etc)
You can boot up and update the OS, but if you mean reinstall the OS to a new version, then youd be best to delete/recreate the partitions when installing the os
