1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc I plan to have two os, ubuntu 9.10 and win 7. ubuntu for office work and light programming, and win 7 for gaming. So the video card should be nVidia to have better linux support. I hope the machine can fulfill the recommended specs of Dragon Age:

RECOMMENDED SPECS

* CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz Processor or equivalent
* RAM: 4 GB (Vista) or 2 GB (XP)
* VIDEO: ATI 3850 512 MB or greater
NVIDIA 8800GTS 512 MB or greater
AMD Phenom II X3 Triple-Core 2.8 GHz or greater
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included? 800USD, tax and shipping included.
3) Where do you live? Tennessee
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
everything, maybe except a mouse.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
none
6) Will you be overclocking?
probably not
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
22, at 1680x1050, but I can turn off the system eye-candies. Just want to make sure I can run the current games smoothly with the lowest visual effect.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
now
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
nothing special
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
I can buy win 7 from a special offer, and it's price is not included in the budget.

Here is what I have in mind (mainly from this post):

Ditch the GTS 250 as the HD4850 1GB is faster than it. Also, go with a SATA DVD burner for better cable management and airflow:
$117 - Visiontek 900287 Radeon HD 4850 1GB PCI-E Video Card FS
$27 - LG Black GH22LS50 DVD Burner

Though your budget does allow for the $155 XFX HD4870 1GB.

Thank you for the advice.
But my doubt is if Radeon is well supported in Ubuntu. Or the current community support is enough for common office work?

The visiontek video card is out of stock, and if I add xfx hd4870 the total will be 954USD. Any idea on how to cut the cost down to 800? The LCD monitor is included in the 800USD budget, so I guess the build needs some modification to fit into the budget.

stick with what ya got on that list except swap out the 500 gig seagate and go with the WD 640 gig drive.. more storage plus much faster.. and i think its only 10 dollars more then the seagate..

you are correct nvidia is far better supported in linux right now.. but ATI's slowly catching up though..

here is another 4850 if you still want to go that route

its only 114 without any rebates to deal with..

also another suggestion.. ya might want to spend the extra 12 dollars and go with this ram instead..

The taxes may take it just over $800 but, you should be able to cough up the few dollars.

I bought half of the stuff from zipzoomfly to save the tax, and changed the LCD with a ASUS 244U. The final cost (including an OCZ keyboard) is 830USD but I can try a MIB of 30.
Thank you all for the advice! I love this forum.

plz post pics of the build. :)
It's not yet arrived, so I can just post the final list for now:
