Hi everyone,

been lurking around for awhile, and finally decided to get ready to pull the trigger on a new computer after the price cuts come later this month (like im sure a million other people as well :) ) Anyways, its been awhile since I last built a computer, so I was hoping people would have some good feedback on if anything in my current configuration should be changed, thanks!

Case: LIAN LI PC-61 USB Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (already bought)
Motherboard: ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus
Video Card EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
DVD Drive: LITE-ON 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With LightScribe
Cooling: ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink

Looks like you did your homework. :) Looks great imho. What's the price of the entire build? And what resolution is your monitor rocking at?
 
Thanks stoney_titan :) The overall price on newegg for the whole shebang is about $1400 out the door, and then minus about $100 for mail in rebates, and then hopefully maybe minus another $100-$150 after some price cuts in the next few weeks *cross fingers*. So i'm hoping overall about $1200. I've got a 22 inch Chimei monitor at 1680x1050, so I'm hoping games will be pretty nice on it and the new setup!
 
replace the Zalman with the more powerfull 9700 model or the Thermalright Ultra 120 which cools a few degrees better than the Zalman and will be more silent thanks to a 120mm fan. Also buy a 4cm fan to put on top of the NB of the heatpipe construction or make a fan shroud like I did , will help overal stability of the board plus helps to overclock it better

At the moment only made one to cool both PWM's but will make a new one with 3 fans...

That will be a rocket my friend even when runnign stock , good quality components...

You're gonna love the 22" ChiMei monitor. I play all the current games on it, and it is as good in response to my eyes as my 19" Sony Trinitron CRT was.
 
leeghoofd, thanks for the suggestion, i'm kind of stretching my budget already unfortunately, do you think the extra $20 bucks for the 9700 would be worth it if i only want to do moderate o/cing?

rHino70, the ChiMei monitor is indeed amazing, especially for the price :) Its good to hear that all the new games look excellent on it as well! I actually also had an old sony crt, and the difference in sharpness is just :D

I have the 9500at on an e6600 clocked up to 3.3ghz, and it's fine. The difference is only a few degrees. But to agree with him, I would go with a small fan to put on your NorthBridge to keep it coolzorz.
 
And wait till end of april plz when the prices have dropped , normally if speculations are correct you should get an E6600 for the price of an E6400...
 
Looks good so far, but the real question is, what power supply are you getting? Don't skimp on it, you've done so well picking out stuff so far :)
 
stain, sounds good to me :) i think i'll stick with the 9500 then and get a small fan for the northbridge

leeghoofd, I'm definitely waiting for the end of april for hopefully the price to drop on the cpu & video card.

Imitation, ahh i knew i forgot something! Here's the one i'm thinking about:

That thermaltake is probably a little weak. There are many other supplies, corsair makes a solid one.
 
Man, it looks like you really did your homework ;) , the only thing I might suggest, like some others, maybe a 9700 Zalman (I've had real good luck with them) I've got one on my E6600 and at 100% all the time it seems pretty quiet and keeps the chip cool. I don't have your mobo, I've got a P5B Dlx, but the advice about having a NB fan is a good one. (us "air coolers" can never have too many fans) Nice setup :D

Also for Imitation and Danny, so the Enhance is a good PS? That was definitely the part that I was least confident about, so I'm glad you recommended a better one, and any other options would be great :)

I definitely spent a lot of time lurking around and just reading on what people had to say about different parts, so I gathered a few tips here and there ;) I think i definitely will take yours and leeghoofd's advice of getting a northbridge fan, do you have any recommendations for one?

The Enhance is a good PSU according to Jonnyguru, a fellow forum member here who's, well, a guru about power supplies. So I do recommend it. However, if you want something with a bit more quality and modularity, then I recommend this PSU:

Corsair 520HX 520W PSU - $106

I own that power supply myself and it's one of the best power supplies I've used in a while. It's quiet, efficient-ish, and modular as well.
 
the ram you've got it pretty good. if its cas4 (Mine is), myn went upto 850mhz no probs on stock volts....

I am going to have to disagree with Danny Bui on this one.

Take a closer look at those results.. The "Good" results were only gained by replacing the fan with a much more powerful and pricier fan, bringing the total price to a much higher amount.

In addition, take a look at the temperature results, both idle and load, with the stock fan..

Kinda sad eh? Definitely a loser compared to the 9500.

The Thermalright Ultra 120 is definitely the best price/performance HSF available right now, and I would strongly suggest that one over the Scythe... The only issue it is out of stock at Newegg right now, but it is good enough to make it worth buying elsewhere, or waiting on at Newegg if you are waiting for the upcoming CPU price drop anyway.

Get the e6420 instead. shopblt has it in stock, or wait for its official release.
replace the 9500 with the ninja, like mentioned.

do you have plans of sli in the future? if not, there are better boards out there. Or what do you think of the cheaper p5n-e board. same chipset
 
Danny Bui, on your recommendation I think I'll go with the Enhance for now, the Corsair looks really nice, but I'm already pushing my budget ;)

Teknokid, it is 4-4-4-12, so hopefully I'll have the same luck OCing as you!

Arentol, you bring up a good point, I hadn't thoroughly looked over that review. So the 9500 does look like a bit more bang-for-the-buck if you aren't going to add any fans to it (which I won't be)

Ziddey, I appreciate your advice, I think I'm going to stick with the e6600 with the higher multiplier though. I don't have immediate plans for SLI (a lil too expensive ;) ) but I would like to have the option of sticking another 8800gts in there in the future.

Hmm thanks for pointing that out. You're right, the good results were only obtained by adding a secondary fan. Thank you for clearing up my misconception. I must've been going on instinct or something. Woohoo7676, definitely get the Zalman. It does perform better than the Ninja.
 
I noticed that the Enhance PS was unfortunately not on newegg, I was hoping to order all my parts from there as they seem to have around the best prices and that would help cut down on shipping costs. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a power supply around $70-80 from newegg?

Looks good, but I also would suggest the 6420 core 2 duo. Youll save 100 bucks, and can put that towards a better cooler, or a more powerful power supply.


I will be running a similar system on a 480 watt Neo power and will be doing major overclocking. I have a 750 watt Silverstone PSU that I am waiting to recieve back, but that may not be for a very long time. I had the neopower running my dual core opteron system w/ like 3 hard drives and an 8800 GTX and it did an awesome job, so I would assume it could run a dual core 4420 w/ a 8800 GTS w/ 1 hard drive all the same.
 
The Corsair 520w goes for $80AR ($10 Rebate) on buy.com w/ google checkout if you're a 1st time buyer.

That's a sweet system. when you put it together, go into the bios and enable the CPU fan to run a variable speed. my rig runs super quiet with it enabled.

Xenozx, I was going to wait for the pricedrops later on in the month, which should hopefully put the e6600 at 224, and then the e6420 at 184, so only a $40 difference. I'm definitely taking a closer look at the e6420 though now :)

You will be happy. My friend came to me with a $2500 budget and I built him what I was building for myself. (almost)

Everything is identical with exception to the memory (he went with 2x2GB - TWIN2X2048-6400) and the mainboard is an ASUS Commando. The GPU is a GTX in his case.. same hard drive, (scores a 5.6 on the WinSAT), and he has a Zalman 9700 LED.

Its an EXCELLENT platform, and everything works in the PC-61 case too.. he had to do some VERY minor dremeling to get the GTX in (on the aluminum case, not the pcb :))

We finished OC'ing it tonight, for the most part. 3.6Ghz on the Zalman 9700, stable. Have yet to OC the memory. At 3.0Ghz it hit 10,750 in 3DMark06. We didn't get to test it once we got to 3.6Ghz.

We did however do another WinSAT...the CPU and HDD were the only things below maximum of 5.9. It hit 5.8 on CPU and 5.6 on the Barracuda - giving it a base score of 5.6. I hope that mainboard you bought is a capable overclocker...
