Playing Games Using Multi-Touch

Pishaw... and here I remember the thread from weeks ago about touchscreen PCs and people just doing nothing but bitching, moaning, and whining that it's not practical... PISHAW I SAY.

YES, YOU CAN. :)

Keyboard/Mouse > Controller/Joystick > Touchscreen

Keyboard/Mouse > Controller/Joystick > Touchscreen

Yes, because you've gamed on multitouch screens before and know what it's like, right?

I say give this idea some time to develop, and we could have some really awesome stuff on our hands. Or, ya know, our hands on some really awesome stuff, if you will. :p

I always wondered what it would be like to play WoW w/ a touchscreen. I think a second touchscreen display w/ all your Icons on it would be great to have, but I still cant picture in my mind not having a mouse to us with it.

You would literally have to clean your screen after every game--or anything for that matter. PASS!!!

To anyone that thinks this is the future is an idiot....

I'm picturing peanut butter & jelly all over the touchscreen from a young kid in the house... LOL

Not the future, but would be a cool toy to have for some games.

meh, just leave it up to some chemist to develop a finger-print resistant film to put on the screen and you're set.

I always thought it would be so much faster to play RTS with a touchscreen rather than a mouse....as for fps though....

That looks awesome, but only really good for RTS' and similar games.

If the iPhone counts, then yes.

Yes, I'm sure the world of multi-touch gaming is going to be at its prime one a 2nd gen iPhone. We're not going to find fleshed out gaming on an iPhone, let alone any small touchscreen with limited multitouch abilities.

Well, you said "Yes, because you've gamed on multitouch screens before and know what it's like, right?" ... then I said I did, because I have. It sucked. Multi-touch is over rated, and fingerprints on a screen suck.

Is cleaning a screen that hard?

I clean my tablet a few time a week... would clean it more if necessary.

My question is: how did hey manage to get Warcraft 3 in widescreen resolution?

It appears stretched to fit the screen.

As for those who are against this. Yeah... given time a multitouch input method in a RTS could dominate any mouse user period. You simply have much more control and with a game designed to be used with multitouch you're going to have many more ways of executing multiple attacks and moves at the same time. Is it the perfect solution for every game? No, an FPS would be rather poor as would any third person game really but an RTS is a great game genre for this type of input.

Touch screen might be interesting with the AWP in CS.

*touches where other players heads are*
No scope headshot!! No scope headshot!!
lol

Really though, I just can't stand any fingerprints on a screen.

Practical issues like finger prints aside, the user in the video looked to be very adept with the interface, yet it still came across as clunky with lots of repeat movements needed to do what he intended to do. It's a neat idea that needs further exploring and experimentation, but what I saw was not ready for prime time by any stretch of the imagination.

Also realize this isn't technically a touch screen interface like the HP TouchSmart or the soon to be released Apple touchscreen iMacs are/will be. This demo was done using a layover that gives multitouch capabilities to most any LCD panel it's attached to, so, yeah, there are some instances where the touch action needed to be repeated. In time, however, keyboards and mice will simply fall to the wayside.

When I played Quake games in the past, seriously played them, I used voice control for a lot of stuff actually. I can play - and still do play - Quake games with just the mouse and nothing else. I don't need no stinkin' keyboard, and I typically waste people don't believe I can do it. Gotta love it when you get underestimated and then take advantage of other people's assumptions in your favor...

Anyone that thinks this isn't the future is two steps past being an idiot... but then again, people are really fucking stupid anyway... :D

With Microsoft investing so heavily into this technology it'll be the future whether we like it or not.

You sure seem confident. You should go invest 80% of your portfolio in manufacturer(s) of multi-touch technologies while the stocks are low. ;)

We're all fucking stupid if we don't agree touch screens are the future of gaming, lol.

Please, tell us some more about the future, and how we're all fucking stupid if we don't believe you. What's next in space travel? How about future energy technologies? :p

You sure do take a lot of shit around personally, tap old boy. I never said it was "the future of gaming," just implied many times over that it's the future of human/machine interfaces. Or didn't you get the memo?

Touch screen gaming has a lot of potential, but I doubt the games that will be successful on it will fit well-developed genres. One bit of potential for a Surface-type computer would be reviving old-school pen-and-paper RPGs/wargames. It would be the height of awesome to maps that you can scroll with your fingers rather than having to draw and re-draw them on plastic sheets as characters move; the ability to have relevant stats displayed next to physical models; searchable rulesets, spell/attack animations; combat calculations taken care of automatically (roll dice on the table, it figures out the number on top based on what it sees from the bottom and does the calcs for you)... Gives the flexibility of pen-and-paper with the ease of use and speed of computer RPGs. And this is just one geeky example; I suspect there would be many other useful ways to work multitouch systems into games.

I concur; people definitely are fucking stupid. But I also think that your confidence is a bit - over the top - maybe? I think multi-touch capable machines/monitors/software will definitely be extremely widespread within the next couple of years. I mean hardware and software are both being developed with the capabilities in mind as of right now, and will be massively available fairly soon, but saying anyone who don't think it will happen an idiot is a little too far.
The truth is that this is what devs are doing right now, they're attempting to make multi-touch wide scale, and before soon we'll be seeing it everywhere, so I do think there will be a large adoption rate.

My comment about the future thing was a sarcastic reply to the poster back in post #11 - it wasn't meant as the end-all-be-all comment of absolute fact that some people are taking it as. Obviously we (meaning us Humans) will eventually move towards touchscreen everything, with voice control backing that up, and even perhaps someday having ubiquitous eye-focus monitoring so the damned machines can even tell what the hell we're looking at. We already have head-mounted devices like TrackIR for controlling game perspective and views by head movements, so eye-tracking can't be all that far behind.

Imagine controlling a game and the kind of absolute pinpoint precision you'd have if you were aiming your targeting crosshair by where your eyes were looking on the screen in front of you. Literally as w1retap said, but even better... "Blink, dead, blink, dead, blink, dead..." :D

nah, you've just got a real condescending absoluteness to your whole attitude of the topic. It isn't as black and white as you say. There are waves of new technologies that make impacts on the consumer, and touchscreens are just one of the many. There's no doubt we'll see touchscreen applications to gaming for the consumer, but to say it is the future and you're fucking stupid if you think otherwise.. that's just ridiculous. You carry that kind of tone in nearly every topic you reply to, so there's really no doubt you are fairly serious.

If I were to make bets on the future of gaming, it would be 3+ dimensional immersion of the human body into a "game". Thus more use of virtual worlds and virtual reality of sorts. I'm not going to say people are fucking stupid if they don't agree with my opinion though.

Too much effort.

Brain wave reader FTW! But then again, it would be embarassing to be in the middle of playing a game and then having some bump and grind pr0n popping up in a window :p

I can see the potential for this in RTS games or similar games where you're issuing commands/pressing icons rather than actually holding down any actual keys (i.e. Uplink) but to say that this is the future of gaming, hell no. I can't even imagine what a first or even third person shooter would be like trying to play on this, or how awkward it would be.

Games like Assault Heroes on Live Arcade, where there's an overhead view, this would probably make a lot more sense.

There will always be a place for keyboard and mouse for FPS in my opinion, and similar games where you must hold a button down for an extended period of time, or require a combination of snap movements and precision. For FPS, the only future it can have as far as things go can only be direct braintapping, where you just have to think about what you want to do on screen. And I think if i'm not mistaken, we might already be there.

Then you can say goodbye to realism.

Games are fine the way they are, and I think the input setup now will be around for a very, very long time. You will lose so much critical time using a touch screen while gaming in RTS games, regardless of how advanced it gets, especially with the current functions and layout of the head up display in the game.

I've seen a video of Fatal1ty play against a guy in Quake4 using just a mouse. Fatal1ty won, but the guy he was playing against was simply average or if not worse than average. So to totally own using just the mouse, you might want to practice telepathy or some other type of magic with that magical hand of yours.

the only place I could see this of any use would be to professional RTS players.... you could get EXTREMELY fast and micro a ton of things with that amount of dexterity... imagine having 1 finger instead of your usual five!

Also if you add a second screen (ala SupCom) it could be truly epic....

But I see no use for it in FPS, MMO, or any other casual games... your hands would kill for just playing a game like that....

Now they need to improve mind reading technology like OCZ did with their thing...

Do people use a keyboard and mouse, or a joystick, or an analog controller for the same kinds of games? No they don't. Controllers are best for platforming and racing; joysticks for flightsims; keyboard and mouse for FPS and RTS. There's been musical rhythm games out for ages, but no one played them until someone made one with a guitar controller. Does that mean you'd use that controller for an RTS or FPS? Get a clue, people. Touchscreens won't change any of this; they'll be good for new varieties of games.

It looks good, but from how the setup is in the movie, it looks too tiring (maybe after half an hour).

For a touch screen game/application to be managable, it has to be ergonomic, which almost definitely means the screen has to be small(er). Would you like to use a touch screen, with your hands, if the screen was a 24" monitor sitting on your desk? Just imagine doing that for one hour, wouldn't you get tired?

Plus, most people aren't dexterous enough to use both hands very accurately. IMO multi-touch displays would be practical for multiple users at once or for screen setups which are set up to be facing upward, like a monitor built into a desk facing the ceiling
