My brother just got a game called Black and White 2. He was pretty excited about playing it, cuz he thought it would be great. So he just got it installed but the game won't open because a "fatal error" comes up saying he needs Pixel Shader 1.1 or later. Is there anything he can do besides get a new video card for the game to work?

Well, if his video card doesn't support pixel shader 1.1 chances are no, he has to upgrade. I'm curious now, what video card does he have?

wow. doesn't support shader 1.1 :D

Since obviously he's probably not a big upgrader, you can buy a ps 1.1 videocard for next to nothing. $30 bucks

Hes got like a.. GeForce MX440, 64MB. Impressive, right? Well, I've got an extra Radeon 9000 Pro that he can use, but the fan stopped working on it. How would I go about repairing the fan on it, and how much do you think that would cost?

An old fan for that wouldn't be much.

I might be wrong in this, but that card might not really NEED a fan but you could use something like a cyclone blower and pull the heat out

something like this

If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct.

I don't know really know what that does, but I'm certain it needs a some kind of cooling. After the fan stopped working, I didn't know, and it caused my computer some problems.

Is a Radeon 9000 good enough to run B&W2 at playable rates?

What are the rest of his PC's specs?

picture this

You have a video card and that thing without having to attach it to the actual card, pulls air and pushes out all the heat the card would generate.

Like I said I could be wrong

As to playing B&W2 I'm sure your not expecting high resolutions and bells and whistles. Just to play it.

The mx 440 does support shader 1.1 the problem is that some games dont support the geforce mx series. I know Lego star wars, Medal of Honor Pacific assualt and I guess we can add this to the list of games that wont run on mx cards. Here is a footnote on lionheads page regarding the minimum requirements for video

* Black&White 2 requires a 64MB video card with 1.1 Pixel Shader support. Supported video cards: NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti series, GeForce FX series, GeForce 6200 or greater; ATI Radeon 8500 or greater, ATI Radeon X300 or greater. DirectX 9.0c is included on this disc and may require the latest drivers for your video and sound card.

The Geforce 4mx series is based off the Geforce 2mx, it doesn't support any pixel shading and was actually slower than a Geforce 3. The Geforce 4ti series is based off the Geforce 3, which supports PS 1.1 and 1.3. The Radeon 8500 supported PS 1.1, 1.3, and 1.4.

swiftshader is worthless for playing games. Max Payne, one of the games that the swiftshader developers brag about on the site, runs 4-5x slower than GMA 900 (42/51 fps @ 800x600 32/16 bit vs 10fps on swiftshader). I believe GMA 900 is the slowest PS1.x/2.0 hardware made, to put that into perspective. :p

Here's benchmarks I made 4 months ago GMA 900 vs swiftshader on a Pentium-M 2GHz: http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1028414165&postcount=6. A slower CPU is going to do a lot worse.

I hate to sound rude, but if he can afford a $50 game can't he afford to buy a graphics card with playing it. If he's really that hard up for cash, see if you can get a used 9600 or 9800.
