i'm thinking about picking up a pioneer vsx-d814 for movies and was wondering if any of you had experience with it or other pioneer receivers.

i'm in an apt now so i don't have a huge room to fill, and i'd most likely be picking up either some bookshelves and a subwoofer, or one of those mini 5.1 systems
 
It''s a good receiver for the money. I have one in my home theatre. Basically all I use it for is a decoder and video switcher. I'm using the pre outs to feed external amps... keeps the unit really cool when behind smoked glass.
 
I would tend to trust a Denon, Marantz or Onkyo receiver over Pioneer. If you want a pretty decent value speaker package, you can pick up b-stock Rocket Tykes.

The Denon AVR-1804 is an excellent unit.

You can get it for under $300.

of course, it would be silly to hook up an speaker with that price range to a $300 receiver.
 
welll, i wanted to have the option of a preamp out and the denon doesn't have that (neither did the onkyo 502 that i was looking at also)
 
looks like a nice receiver... so you'd have no problem getting something refurb? a couple of my friends got refurb harman kardon receivers a few years back and had some problems
 
About a year. The only problem is a bit of a lag aquiring a DD stream. It can be annoying if a movie doesn't have a continuous stream. I love it for music.
