Im wondering if the 4890 is still a Viable card @ 1920 gaming. I picked up a XFX 4890 with a lifetime warranty really cheap (120 shipped). Good deal or not. I know its an older card but from what Ive read its still a kick ass card.

I play a variety of games from MMO's to just about anything really. Latest has been Stalkers & Metro wich my 8800gt hasnt been handling either very well.

4890's aren't too far off performance wise from the gtx 285, and my 285 is still handling everything I need at 1920x1080. If you can live without DirectX 11, you're still good.

I was trying to find something within Budget of 120 that could take the 4890 but i couldnt find anything. From what ive been reading DX11 isnt all that Great.

well, the comparible part would be either the HD5830 (or the GTX460 SE...?), though at higher price.

That card is still a steal for the price you got it. You don't have any performance worries. The only reason I would have suggested going 5000 series or with a comparable nvidia part would be for surround gaming, but I doubt that was a factor in it.

A GTX 260 will give you comparable (sometimes superior, sometimes inferior) performance and can be had used for 100ish. 460 768mb can't handle 1920 very well and costs a little more. If you can find a used GTX 275/285 for under 140 (or a used 260 for 100 or less) I'd definitely go for it. They're still very fast cards that will power any game out there at med/high settings for 1920 res, sometimes even max settings. Except for my massively botched RMA's for my 260 Super OC I'd still be using it...

Edit: I was speaking generally of course. To the OP: You got a great deal man, congratulations. You should be very pleased with the performance. Metro will still give you problems but you'll notice an improvement. The 4890 can easily take on Stalker with 2009 Complete mod. I saw your 8800 GT in the FS/T section and almost bought it on a lark to play with physx some more. I used to have the exact same card until I upgraded to a GTX 260 and the day that I installed the 260 the 8800 GT died on me. Very sad.

260 = 4870 the 4890 > 260

4890 for 100 bucks used is the best deal in vid card at the moment imo

Overall I do agree with this however the 260 has a much wider memory bus and texture fillrate level, factors which can matter in some games for stable/smooth framerates.

Thanks guys much appreciated. I did try to snag more funds to get a better card such as the gtx 460 1gb but the funds are not there & I wanted to play stalker but performance on the 8800gt wasnt there either so it made it difficult.

Considering that the 260 can handle stalker without any troubles @ 1080p the 4890 should have none either since it is theoretically the faster card. I had no driver issues with Stalker when I played it recently on a 6870. Good luck!

I sold my 8800gt for 45 here on the forums wich will cost 15 to ship wich leaves 30.00. I only had around 120 in my paypal total without going into my bank account for Xmas gifts.

I already paid for the 4890 so im sure ill be happy with it for awhile. I got 108 games in steam now & I want to finaly be able to play most of them.

& sorry guys i didnt realize that I had the price wrong in my thread. The xfx 4890 I got was purchased for 120 shipped not 100 that was a my fault. The guy on hardforum who had the xfx 4890 for 100 sold it already so i got them mixed up

the 4890 is a great strong card the 460 is really a side grade with a few more features.. raw performance its not gonna help much.

The HD4890 was good enough for me at 1920x1080 that I never felt the need to upgrade with the 400 and 5000 series out. The card is an excellent DX9 performer, and is light years ahead of the 8800 GT, like literally twice as fast. If I didn't want HDMI out I'd probably consider using it for another year.

Still a very relevant card. If it's a reference card it should overclock very well, but they run a little warm and the 'leaf blower' fan can get noisy. Most of the XFX 4890's I've seen are non reference so you'll get a better (quieter) fan but less overclocking potential (non adjustable VRM). Regardless you will have a hard time beating the performance of it for $100.

The GTX 275 is a direct competitor with the 4890.

No, they are comparable.
They are comparable only in the sense that... you can physically compare them.

The GTX 260 Core 216 is comparable to the 4870 1 GB.
The GTX 260 Core 192 is comparable to the 4870 512 MB.
The GTS 250 is comparable to the 4850 512 MB.

There's a clear distinction between the GTX 260 216's performance level, and the 4890/GTX 275 performance level.

Good choice, excellent company, make sure to register the serial number on their website to get the full warranty. That's a pretty good cooler, also. Much better than the turbines.

Good deal on a nice card.Enjoy.Gives me some idea what my EVGA 275 is worth.

The 4890 is a good card although it can run a little hot if you CF it..lol Currently running 2 atm but getting a 480 GTX soon since a friend offered to sell me his near mint card for about $300. (He's upgrading to a 580)
All in all, i never really had any trouble running at 1920x1200 resolutions even with one. Only on the newest games at full eye candy was i really slowing down and even then it wasn't too bad if the settings were tuned down to a decent level. As others have said, still a very viable card.
(Hope my brothers and sisters like the 4890 since i will be most likely selling it to them for about $50... :))

Never mind about this here. I installed firefox and everything works that didnt before.

I love my 4890, definitely one of my best vid card purchases right up there with 8800gt. I'm feeling the itch to upgrade so I'll be selling my precious pretty soon :)

so the gtx 260 is a better card overall over the 4890?

No way. 4890 wins hands down.
However, the XFX 4890 is pretty dire in terms of overclocking and sometimes reliabilty, with their intro to the ATi/AMD world they did a good card with cheap components, dont expect a great overclock if you're thinking doing so. I believe they did a v2 of this card which is better than the original though.

EDIT: The card you bought (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150438) is the second version, so ignore me, carry on and enjoy :)

what happens when you OC the HD4890 to 1GHz, then (stock is 850MHz, some vendor specials were 960MHz)?

Faster than GTX285?

Faster than 275/280 certainly

and at [H] it still overclocked by over 10%

your grabbing the best case possible 260 card with oc scenario.. cut the crap and just say the base 4890 is better then the base 260 so in general with oc the 4890 is still better you could grab the best case of both and go at it but this was just a general thread on general comparison in general the 4890 is better then the 260.

OC is never a sure thing on any card.
