Hey guys, seems that Tiger has started his vacation time, so what do we plan to do to make up for his slack?

EVGA Is closing fast on my birthday, can't lose before then!

I for one am setting aside the last 600$ for my SR2 build, EVGA just said a few hours ago they are gonna start shipping very soon!

Nice..... I want to pick one up soon. The only way I'm going to keep Evil off my back is to pick one of those up and hope I can get 60k out of it.

Well I won't be switching from A3 to -bigadv tonight on the new build because I'm typing this from the hospital. Baby Abby is coming. Wife is well and so is baby. Can't wait to hold her.

I just picked up an i7 920 gtx280 and mobo to upgrade my QX6700 workstation... should be operational tomorrow... and doing A3's :)

also got 8gb of ram for my dual quad core xeon machine so it can start doing A3 WU's finally :D

also adding another GTX260 into one of my boxen with 2x GTX260's in it at the moment to bring it to 3x GTX260's that box will hopefully get ~20kppd... also got the dual 9800GX2's folding in another boxen and OC'd to get about 20k~ ppd out of those two cards... OC'd my boxen with dual 8800GTX's and that one is getting about 10kppd... waiting on some other cards... and saving dollars for more i7 A3 boxes

dude, two of the greatest moments in my life were holding my kids the minute after they were born. And there's something special about having a little baby girl. You're gonna freaking love it. And hate it. But mostly love it.

Congrats.

Congrats on your new baby! Cherish those memories now, because she is going to become a teenager faster than you realize, and then she will want her own car. But until then, you will have many many years of bliss.

As for Tiger, i'm afraid I can't do much until towards the end of this year. As for this eVGA SR-2, what is so special about this? It appears that the folding community is really looking foward to this motherboard. I see that there are plenty of other dual LGA 1366 mobos on the market.

non that can overclock the highly overclockable 1366 xeons

Do we know that they will be highly overclockable? I am curious to see how well registered DDR3 memory overclocks as well, or are all the xeons unlocked multiplier wise?

Hmmm, I wonder who here will be the first to get a dual Westmere setup and overclock the hell out of it then!

Well since they will actually be shipping the damn thing, then I may hold off on my mATX build and build my SR-2. Going to require a fair amount of plumbing work to get all together.

They already have a few boards out to certain people and have broken like every record out there

The board was designed by one of the biggest OC'ers in the world (or so I read). The board was designed to run to the max, hence the SuperRecord. I mean hardcore, like Liq Nitro type hardcore

Mine will be under water, but I don't do extreme OC'ing. I am going to go for the x5650's though and I am shooting for 150K PpD out of this rig. I damn better get it :D

very nice!

Congratulations!

Give Baby Abby a hug and a kiss from me!

Congratz K! Now, back on topic...

This auction is for one NEW pair of Intel Xeon
Quad Core E5530 Processor
QGXW ES AT80602000777AA Socket i7/1366
2.4GHz 8MB

Now, the big question...when the heck is the SR-2 going to release? I'm tempted to just pick up a "cheap" dual socket 1366 board to hold me until the initial rush on the SR-2 is over.

Damn guys, those eVGA SR2's are not gonna be cheap when they hit. $500, wow!

I didn't know that the other dual LGA 1366 motherboards wern't able to overclock as I thought that every basic motherboard could do that.

Hmm, I know that I want to add another folding rig the next holiday season, but then I hear that socket 2011 is going to be just around the corner which means the death of all socket 1366 stuff.

Do the socket G34 Magny Cours motherboards have overclocking abilities? But then of course by this holiday, Bulldozer would be just around the corner...........

Good Luck Mr Kendrak. My farm is getting to be a good size these days.

  • Dual E5530 @ 2.4 Ghz
  • Dual E5530 @ 2.4 Ghz
  • Dual E5530 @ 2.4 Ghz
  • Dual X5550 @ 2.93 Ghz
  • X5550 @ 2.66Ghz (Can be Overclocked it needed)
  • Dual E5504 @ 2.0Ghz (Being Shipped Now)
  • E5504 @ 2.0Ghz (Being Shipped Now) (Can be Overclocked it needed)
  • X3075 @ 2.66Ghz (Core 2 Duo)
  • T9300 @ 2.5Ghz (Core 2 Duo)

The Dual E5530s can get 18,000 PPD on Standard A3 units.
Will be more once SMP2 bigadv comes out with Windows

The Dual X5550 can get 25,000 PPD on Standard A3 units.
Will be more once SMP2 bigadv comes out with Windows

The X5550 can get 10,000 PPD on Standard A3 units.
Will be more once SMP2 bigadv comes out with Windows

The Core 2 Duos get around 2,000 PPD on average

No numbers on the E5504 Systems,
I was at 100K per day before the new E5504 systems come online next week.
I am really wanting to see what SMP2 -bigadv will do on all the Dual Xeon Systems

I honestly can't wait till we get SMP2 -bigadv in windows as I don't like running emulator type stuff. Now I can see why you hardcore folders are going with the multiple processor systems. So much potential there, and it is perhaps the route I should plan towards for next time.

There was a good debate a while back here about 2 x single systems vs a dual cpu system.

Price wise, both setups were within $25.00 of each other.
(At that time SR-2 was no known, and that will make a dual system more expensive)

Now with the A3 Bonus system, the Dual CPU systems are even better.

I got an Antec 300 case with only a Q6600 churning away for about 7k PPD. The case wouldn't mind an upgrade of its guts ;)

*runs around with donation box*

:p

I notice that those Intel Westmeres will jack up the price of a potential boxen, but the SR2 factor should make it more appealing despite the added initial cost as I can only imagine what you could do with two Westmeres that are overclocked. My current i7 boxen produces about 22k ppd and I believe a 24 core twin Magny Cours rig produces about 66k ppd(from the xbit review) at about 3 times the price of my rig. A 12 core twin Westmere would likely cost a good bit more, but overclocked would equal WOW WOW WOW! If only those Xeons wern't priced so much higher than their i7 couterparts :(

I guess the end result is how much you have to spend. For me, I have a feeling i'll have to go the incremental route with a single cpu boxen at a time.

Nehalem has really made things hard for the enthusiast. Before, all anyone would have to do is BSEL mod one of the cheaper Xeons, find a motherboard that has support for its clock generator in one of the software OC tools, and you have yourself a relatively inexpensive well performing dual socket platform. With the two-tiered approach to OCing (BSEL+software) you could OC as much as 900MHz above stock frequency with decent cooling and the right chips. To accomplish the same feat now you need to spend ~$600 on a motherboard. Things have changed big time in a year.

I've been thinking about dual xeon setups but the numbers make it seem not worth the money

If I buy a pair of E5530's a Z8NA and 6gb of DDR3 I am out a hair over $1500 for 18kppd

meanwhile a pair of 9800GX2's can make ~20kppd :(

There are different approaches to the math behind the cost and some will argue it's cheaper in the long run. Since everyone's particular situation can be vastly different than someone else's, there are no hard and fast answers to the cost question. You'll have to evaluate your budget and see how it fits with your own figures for total purchase price, long-term operational costs, etc., vs alternatives.

Yes, although I'd run -bigadv for ~30k PPD making that option somewhat more desirable. BTW, the EVGA SR-2 that everyone is drooling over will likely have a release MSRP of over $600...

The big downside to high performance GPU setups is their power consumption and secondarily is heat production, especially in the coming summer months. People are becoming less and less interested in GPU because of these reasons.

Power savings is the big reason I like the Xeons.
My Dual E5530 system pulls 287 watts @ 100% load and run at 50C.
I think it is a pretty good PPD / Watt Ratio.

I think FLECOM is winning the whole "ramp it up to make up for Tiger's drop in production" competition. Hopefully my 9800gtx arrives safely to his door today so he can add some more thousands to that increasing PPD.

Go ahead and forget the whole catching up with ya FLECOM. ;)

It is okay if he beats me, just glad to have him back folding.

As long as I get some WUs that cooperate with my GPUs I should get be able to get 56k ppd from the 980x.
Still dialing in the 1055T/GTS 250 system but it was getting 15k ppd w/o any OC but it only folds part time. Since I have the H50 on this system I can bump up the OC and get a little more.

got my new i920 workstation put together today... for some reason I was having difficulty with the P6T WS mobo I got and my HP Smart Array 642 raid controller... so I had to delete/create the array in my old workstation and then put the controller in the new workstation... still cant get into the bios/config for whatever reason but w/e its working...

OC'd the 920 to ~3.7Ghz (21*180) and the gtx280 shaders are at 1458Mhz... so new workstation is putting out around 25kppd not bad :D

now have to OC the crap out of my old QX6700 machine and get it operational also

also got a 9800GTX and found an 8800GT so putting together another box to run those two cards

got my old QX6700 machine up and running, got it stable at 3.2ghz, was having difficulty going any higher... maybe with a better HSF or some water cooling I could get it higher... but I am pretty tapped out at the moment lol

still, its getting like ~5500~6000ppd so not too bad

I would be happy with that if I were you. Those qx6700s weren't known for getting terribly high in the 3ghz range.
