You know, even though we hear invisibility cloak stories like this every few months or so, they always seem to take me by surprise. Get it? I didn't see it coming? Heh...sorry. :D

Scientists in the U.K. have developed a flexible film that can manipulate light to render objects invisible. The film contains tiny structures known as "metamaterial," and marks the next step in creating a real-world invisibility cloak, like the one in the Harry Potter novels.

Metamaterials are artificial materials engineered to provide properties which may not be readily available in nature. These materials usually gain their properties from structure rather than composition, using the inclusion of small inhomogeneities to enact effective macroscopic behavior.[1][2][3]

The primary research in metamaterials investigates materials with negative refractive index.[4][5][6] Negative refractive index materials appear to permit the creation of superlenses which can have a spatial resolution below that of the wavelength. In other work, a form of 'invisibility' has been demonstrated at least over a narrow wave band with gradient-index materials. Although the first metamaterials were electromagnetic,[4] acoustic and seismic metamaterials are also areas of active research.[7][8]

Potential applications of metamaterials are diverse and include remote aerospace applications, sensor detection and infrastructure monitoring, smart solar power management, public safety, radomes, high-frequency battlefield communication and lenses for high-gain antennas, improving ultrasonic sensors, and even shielding structures from earthquakes.

Sounds simple, no? :)

I doubt it's completely unnoticeable like that, but the least they could do is try and show it.. ie. someone having a fabric like that "toweled" around their finger or arm or something (with their arm crocked inward like a waiter).

Lets see we can actually make Crysis suits before we can make a computer to actually play Crysis at full detail? Sad sad sad.

All we need to do is coat a person in that organic stronger than kevlar body armor and then put this on top of them and we will have a ridiculously awesome assassin team...

I remember watching a BBC program hosted by Michio Kaku in which they talk about this. It was back in 2007 or 2008 and its only effective in the microwave range. They sure are progressing very fast

There are never any pictures. :(

Just so we are clear here. Just because they are announcing this stuff now does not mean it is new. This material has been around in one form or another since the 50's and the government has probably been using it in black programs for decades. There would be no reason to expose this tech for the world to see until it has been made obsolete. What I am saying is that this particular invisibility tech is old. That would be the only reason we would EVER find out about something like this.

Or "they" want you to think they have had it. If other people think you have all this mystical wonderous stuff, then your less likely to mess around with them because of the "secret weaponry". You don't even need to make it, just say you don't and everyone thinks you do, yet it wasn't used in recent conflict or whatever. Which would have been a perfect time to. Plus when there have been "secret" weapons, they haven't stayed secret for very long...or kept in the closet (stealth fighter/bomber, that U2 things, atom bomb etc.) A more likely reason that it is in the news, was because it was done in england, which is a country that comes up with ideas but doesn't invest in them, so the inventors have to sell them on. Consider it advertising.

This is nothing new. The mob has been making people disappear quite effectively since the 1920's.

Better watch out because they are behind you with their invisibility cloaks!
