Call MacGyver from work and get him to come fix it. Just make sure you have a pocket knife for him. Chuck Norris kicked it out of his hand when he came over to fix Chuck's cable. MacGyver hasn't really been the same since.

MacGyver, Chuck Norris, pen knives, I wonder if any of those guys work for my ISP (Qwest) and if pen knives are tax deductable
I have successfully got 2x boxen folding with the "disk less and everything else" method of folding (yeah, I know, a little late to the party, everyone else is doin the GPU thing)
What I was wondering, knock on wood my DSL is pretty dependable, was how long does the DSL have to be out before it screws up one of the boxen ?
My prayers to the "Computer Gods" are up to date and I have a UPS for my folders, but I was wondering if it is worth the hassle and expense to have a backup plan for the Internet connection? (say wireless or something)
Please post any answers, suggestions, criticisms or even an "are you outa' your freakin' mind asking such dumb questions" reply.

I'm posting thid from my smart phone.
Most of my boxen still have WU. If i come home and it's still out I'm gong to try and figure out how to patch the phone into the network.
Grab a old phone modem, a AOL CD (or use the 56k number available from your ISP) then hook it for some 56K torture

it's the phone line thats dead. no 56k action for me. the DSL modem is fine, throwing a fit cuz it cant get a signal.
Been bussy at work. Just made a trade that will net me 1200 bucks (not bad for 30 min work) I know the neighbors have called. I've got a few more clients comming in this afternoon, but I am going to have the wife call if it's not back on by 2.

That's not how you do it. You tell them that if they don't get things up and running ASAP you will be hooking up all your boxen to fold in their building and using their electricity until the line is fixed. Then, you just show them your power bill. After that it should be fixed within 15 minutes.

Man , I can "dig" where you're comin' from. No freakin' phone, that's gotta' be unconstitutional, "cruel and unusual punishment" and severally "forked up".
Please call your phone provider and tell them it violates your code of being a "tree hugger" to use any wood for making fires and the situation so grave you're thinking about using "smoke signals" for communication".
I hope for your sake, and the sake of all the unfortunate people with the devastating diseases we all fold to find the cure for, that your phone company hires MacGyver and helps him sharpen his pen knife or whatever and gets your phone sevice up. (phone = DSL)

I can probably get you a meeting with some "contacts" that might be able to strongarm... I mean offer an alternate plan to the phone company which is much more efficient than their current one.

Friggen lowlifes cut the phone cable to sell for scrap. I lost a good 12 hours of production and how many people lost service (not to mention possible emergency that could not have been reported)
I'm am soo fed up with this shit.

I feel your pain but 12 hours is nothing.
I was without an internet connection for 36 hours the last time my router stopped working.
My new one is running stable so far.

Heh, if my router died I would beg, steal or borrow another one probably within hours. I can get my hands on a non-wireless router within minutes (although it's an old POS and would take forever to get setup again) or I could run down to my parents' house and take my sister's wireless router she isn't using (then put DD-WRT on it and do a quick setup). Worst case scenario, I would have to go out and buy a new one. The only thing which would keep me from having a router within a couple of hours would be if it died in the middle of the night. Even then, I would probably still be able to get hold of my friend and get his wired router. I don't actually need his permission or anything since I have a key to his house, but I don't want to walk in while he is in the middle of something.
