So, I just built a HTPC which I will either plop a few drives into, or build a gaming machine and host most of my storage there. Better still, a NAS box may be in order.

Initially, I was looking to install 2 Hitachi Deskstar 1TB drives into the HTPC; then, I looked at the 500GB and saw that I could come out cheaper by a decent margin, enough to justify going the 500GB route. Is there a better drive / solution, performance / speed / utility-wise? Ultimately, this will be for DVD/BD/HD-DVD/DVR/MP3 archival + ROMs.

500gb is the best size/buck, but what really matters is how much space you need for your HTPC because they are more limited in how many drives you can have than a tower.

Seagate, WD and Samsung all have good 500gb drives for ~$100-120.

ill reccoment one of the WD GP drives with half the power draw of other drives

One of the forum members actually created a script for this kind of question, you can find it here. It lists pretty much all the hard drives at the major e-retailers and you can sort it by Price/Gb.

Wow, fan-TAST-ic script. Thanks.

So, the cost was really a secondary focus.. for my application, would you go NAS, media server (i.e. in the gaming rig), or...?

I'm thinking RAID 5. The performance should be fine, right?

I can't remember if I said this when unhappy_mage first posted his script but THANK YOU!
