If I wanted to take flamebait, yes. But instead I will question the person's credibility after flagrant name calling.

Don't worry, nobody is going to say anything bad about your precious Nvidia. The truth speaks for itself, and it is everywhere.

I love how when someone buys a video card, all of a sudden they turn into the Engineer that designed it, thinking they know everything about it.

Does it really make a fucking difference on who has shitty dirvers if the card does what it was intended to do such as....display 3D-Graphics?

My precious nvidia? When ATI makes a driver that can run on Linux worth a shit let me know. I'm not denying NVIDIA fucked up with the FX line. They did pretty bad, but ATI's drivers still suck and are inadaquate for my needs. As bad as NVIDIA's hardware has been as of late, their software still beats everything ATI has.

I won't disagree with you about nVidia Linux drivers BUT I will disagree about ATi Windows drivers. They have worked flawless for me since the CAT 3.0s when I bought my 9700 Pro.

It amazes me that when 1 person has problems with a driver set, whether it be nVidia or ATi, the entire driver set and video card series is shitty.

It seems to me that people who are having driver problems have no idea what maintaining a good PC environment means.:(

Everything thing that you have posted is opinion. Let me give you facts :

some people use Ati in Linux without problems

Nvidia has problems with their drivers, some of which they broke themselves and won't fix.

To just say ATI drivers Sucks makes you look 10, most of us here at the [H] know how to read reviews and know the opposite. According to most review sites, Ati has as good/if not better drivers then Nvidia. I will listen to them for advice on the drivers instead of some random person saying Ati Drivers sucks like you have some agenda.

Santroph - I don't think you understand. Hydravision is a multiple monitor/desktop untility. The 56.56 drivers have a multiple desktop for one monitor ala XWindows for Linux. I can switch between multiple, personalized desktops and send apps/windows to any of these desktops. Find someone with a Linux installation and you will know what I mean.

If hydravision has this ability then please excuse me, that was something I didn't know about. I am certain that hydravision doesn't have this though.

obs-yes these drivers are awesome! There is no way I would go back to ATI. The ATI drivers are boring. The 56.56 make the overall computing experience much better.

The 9600 NP was not an SE, it was actually a regular NP with 256 MB of memory. This is the second ATI card I have owned. I had an original Radeon 32MB DDR back when they were originally introduced. The drivers were an atrocity to gaming back then. They really are alot better now.

EDIT: one last thing - NVidia drivers are better for Linux.

I've yet to have a single issue with Nvidia or ATi drivers (besides some crappy nForce2 releases). The only video card drivers I thought were shit, were my 3dfx V3 and V5 drivers.

Anyways requiem99, if you're really having trouble with ATi drivers than maybe you should go to nvidia.... do what you gotta do man. They both have relitively equal performance, but if you do switch to Nvidia your ps2.0 performance is going to be an obvious downgrade.

The only thing I am disappointed about with these drivers is that I don't have the 'automatic overclock' option under the overclocking tab. I don't know why but I suspect it is because I have the 5900XT which doesn't have the temperature reading function.

If there is a way to enable this on a 5900XT that would be great.

Dude I know what a pipeline is , I have a few 9500 --> 9700 successful mods and un successful.

I program games for these things i'm not that stupid, but if your worshipping the FX you need your brain checked lol. Fix this, I'm telling you programing wise the 9700 is a nicer card to mess with which means that why all the games run better on it, less hassle.

Maybe your card isn't as pipeline successful as you think and thats whats giving you problems.

We are all trying to help, don't get mad because you can't fix it. Instead talk it through with people and they may want to help you.

DaveM

Ok dave:

1) I'm not worshipping the FX. I didn't like the 5800 Ultra and my cousin has a 5200 and it sucks ass. At least the drivers for both those cards work, and thats more than I can say for my radeon. I have to say I love the radeon, i just hate the drivers that power it. They take the best video card I've ever used and make me want to use it to disembowel ATIs braindead software engineers.

2) The mod works perfectly. Even if it didn't, I've tried as a matter of troubleshooting running all this stuff without the "modded" drivers. It doesn't affect anything.

I don't want help fixing the ATI card, no one here can help me fix something that is inherently unfixable at the user level. The ball is not in my court, its in ATIs.

All I wanted was some opinions of the 5900 series. Thats all.

Then you didn't ask your question correctly, You should have asked in the thread title, what do you think about the 5900, not try to get people to compare the 5900 to your messed up mod.

Me too. I guess wiggling my nose to do stuff really works and works good.

When I first got my 9700 back in 2002, I thought the drivers did suck. I didn't know much about hardware back then, but I noticed that with each driver release things got better. By spring 2003, everything was worked out. Granted, I've had some issues with certain games here and there, but it's really been smooth sailing for over a year now.

Man there must be an awful lot of people who are true tech geniuses to get the ATI drivers working with out a problem lmfao.
This driver issue with the catalyst drivers is getting like an old wifes tale spread continuously by people who have invested in failed hardware=NvidiaFX;)

As for linux and ATI thats pretty funny as i have been running Debian linux on my 9600XT without so much as a single problem;)
if you dont know what ya doing then dont blame the Card Or the Drivers blame yourself;)

Sorry wannabe troll, I'll not take that bait. Try again.

It's no bait, think about it, the proof is in the pudding. The thread title says "Performance comparison 5900 vs 9700pro." Yet you don't care about the performance because you can't get the Ati card to run right in the first place.

Then you try to change the subject of the thread to "what do you think about the 5900" And when people give you advice that you don't want to hear you start calling names. Come on Req you used to do this shit all of the time, if search wasn't busted I would post at least a dozen or so links where you are bashing Ati.

Either talk with some respect to the others on this forum or take the shit elsewhere. We didn't fall off the cabbage truck yesterday, we see right through shit like this. People do it everyday. Good day sir.

I know what a soft mod is DOH

Wich drivers are you using for the mod ?

Why dont you tell the whole sad story or better yet move on to the FX line and give it a break

I currently have six systems running 4 with geforce 4 Ti4200
1 with 9500Pro 1 with 9700Pro

I like bargains and right now "today" ATI 9700 Pro and 9800 Pro in my humble idiotic flameboy oppinion, gives the most bang for your buck. In the mid range you have to give the Ti 4200 top honors.

Now if you cant make ATI products work on your masterfully crafted box maybe you should buy a FX5900 and be on your happy little nintendo 64 way

That is all

You are excused ;)
to tell the truth i think it has the capacity of 16 virtual desktops
i don't remember because i don't play with it for a while now, but it is something very good.
