Perfect Dark

Yeah, it's a bad angle, but at no angle should she look like Chaning Tatum with more hair, lol.

Reminder this is what Joanna's face looked like from the OG game... Despite whatever the (completely different) box art and promotional renders showed.

What's your point? This was Tifa from FFVII on PS1.

The box art is the reference point. Minecraft looking boxy polygons is not the reference point. With modern graphical capabilities, there's no excuse for making her look like a dude. That was the direction they chose. The new Lara Croft looks like a trans dude. This isn't some rare occurrence. This BS has been infiltrating gaming now, not just TV shows and movies.

The box art is the reference point.
The box art is a different face from even the promotional renders or concept art.

Here is the official concept art (extremely similar to in-game):

Concept art.png

Here is a promotional render (different from the concept art, ironically the jawline is the same as the upcoming game for all the comments about it, also different from the different again model on the prior page)

Here's the box art (completely different design again, the Japanese in-game model's eyes were closer to this):

There is zero consistency between of promptional renders vs the concept art and in-game appearance. Let alone the Xbox sequel which may as well have been a Spice Girl. The discrepancies make them look like practically 007-type different people.

I own and played the game so I'm more concerned whether it will actually play like the best elements of the original wrt secondary-effect transforming weapons and gadgets, customization and intuitive and ahead-of-its-time UI and such. The trailer hasn't inspired confidence though.

And Tifa in Remake and Rebirth still looks like her original model, as primitive as those graphics were.

And they used Michelle Merkin in the live action promotional material.

The Xbox 360 game was a prequel, not a sequel, and the character designs for that one were made by a manga artist. It annoys me that people in the online discourse keep referencing the prequel in regards to her character design when that game was stylistically designed in opposition to the new game.
The new Joanna Dark is ugly as fuck. There really isn't any argument to be made about it. STFU already.
Wow, you totally destroyed his sourced post. I'm completely convinced now.

To each their own, I think she looks alright. Just not sexy, which the OG Joanna never really was, at least to me.

Blade-Runner's picture is edited.

I'm still referencing the pic in my original post. I knew she looked like a certain guy when I first saw her and just couldn't remember his name for a while, and then it dawned on me; Channing Tatum 😅.

Anyways, as much as all this regressive character design annoys me in modern games, I'm still open to playing them as long as the gameplay is there. It's just becoming harder to ignore as more games do it.

Face model for Joanna in the new game is Elissa Bibaud. Here she is in a photo with minimal editing. It's hard to find an unedited picture since she is a professional model.

Here is the head-on shot from the trailer thumbnail I referenced earlier:

Looks spot-on, to me.

Honestly, this might be the one case of recent facial scanning where the character design is better than the source material.

It would be, if they didn't increase her chin size by a factor of 10.

I sought out a minimally edited picture, and you post one of the most edited pictures of her face that I came across in my search.
And you posted one of the absolute worst pictures of her you could find, which just illustrates how terrible the end result is, and they still managed to blow up her chin. Her ugly mug was a design choice. Developers have unlimited freedom in creativity and this is what they chose to do. They don't need a model if they're going to make the character look this way. They could pick any rando off the street and achieve the same result. Or do what other devs have been doing and inject themselves into the game. They picked a pretty horrible model to begin with. But they made it worse. Maybe for their next game, they'll model the character after Kamala Harris' stepdaughter with the hairy armpits.

You're right. They could choose to do whatever they want. But everyone seems to have a hard-on for masculine women these days.

I don't care if she looks like a bull dyke or a thot cum dumpster, I'm still going to play it.

So is this going to have modern, normal fps aiming, or do that weird shit like perfect dark zero?

Perfect Dark Zero had the clunky GoldenEye N64 style aiming on top of terrible input lag.
They tried to be cute instead of using objectively superior, modern controls, and pretty much everyone hated it. They really dropped the ball on what could have been a huge success. It was a really fun game otherwise and could have turned into a popular series like Halo or CoD.

I'd assume modern unless they want the game to suck

Ironically I think I remember but GoldenEye actually had modern esque control schemes, though everyone I knew just used the default

Including one where you could use two controllers at the same time for dual analog stick action

Unless she looked like Gorlock the destroyer I seen so many ugly thing in games nothing affects me. No worse than cleaning out the wet vac at Walmart almost puked.

Yes, there is a control scheme that resembles modern twin-stick on a single controller, but it's reversed. Movement and strafing is on the C-buttons on the right side of the control, and 6 degrees of aiming on the analog stick in the middle. I've tried it before, but it feels weird trying to aim with my left hand, and the joystick on the N64 controller is one of the worst ever made. Even all the modern repro controllers I've tried have had terrible joysticks.

Yeah it had that, but the other annoying thing is when you "aim down sights" it just moves your crosshair around the screen instead of keeping it centered and turning your character. That wasn't an option you could change. And if you just shot from the hip the guns weren't accurate.

I mean, every gun in the game was basically the smart gun from Aliens. You just had to wait for the gun to acquire a target before shooting. The sensitivity of the auto aim is less on higher difficulties, but you can still breeze through 00 Agent without ever needing to use the reticle on enemies.

Like Turok? That might be my first experience strafing at all tbh.

So this game is Microsoft but it says Crystal Dynamics in the front trailer on Steam.

Then I read all the IPs were sold in 2022
https://www.polygon.com/23053137/square-enix-embracer-eidos-crystal-dynamics-tomb-raider

So basically were getting a Deus Ex sequel in Perfect Dark.

Embracer group bought everything for 300,000,000 in 2022 they own alot of stuff I mean alot.
You kinda wonder what the purpose of being such a big glut in the game industry if it's to actually make good
game or it's for the money. With EA it's about the Money I know that for a fact. Lars WIngefors the owner of Embracer group
might actually like PC games since he's about the right age 43 and net worth of 1.1 Billion'

The Perfect Dark IP is owned by Microsoft by way of their acquisition of Rare back in 2002. The game is being designed and developed by The Initiative, which was founded internally by Microsoft. The studio is headed by the former head of Crystal Dynamics. The studio head brought in Crystal Dynamics for support due to staffing challenges at the fledgling developer. It is not unusual for Microsoft to bring in outside support to develop its games.

In short, The Initiative is and always has been the developer of the Perfect Dark reboot, and they have always been a division of Microsoft.

Any news on this game? Basically the only game I care about.

Unfortunately looks like more overbudgeted, mass-market modern audience slop. Which is unfortunate. I really enjoyed the N64 Title and even Zero (to an extent, that game was woefully unfinished)

There's just something you can feel when you look at a game trailer, or demonstration or see someone playing it: You can see if the team that made the game truly LOVED the project and WANTED to make the game.

You see that with Expedition 33
You see that with Elden Ring
You see that with Baldur's Gate
You see that with Black Myth

I don't see that here. I see "minimum viable product" and "doing this for a paycheck"

I still can't get over how ugly she is. She looks like Syndrome from The Incredibles.

It's called the DEI-Jawline. When board members want to include female characters but don't want to get in trouble for sexualising them, they give them really prominent, masculine jawlines in an effort to make them seem more like men. Now that you noticed it once and know what it is, expect your pattern recognition to go into overdrive seeing it in all the mediocre media nowadays.

That article really hypes it up lol. "Legendary series".
LMAO there were 2 games, the last one on Xbox 360 didn't live up to the hype and the first one came out in 2000 on N64. Sure it was great for N64, but we had plenty of superior fps on PC and Dreamcast by that point.

If they keep that ugly character design it's DOA.
3 games. You're forgetting the Game Boy Color game.

guess not...

Yeah I read about Everwild being canceled but not Perfect Dark, that sucks.
