On Wednesday Skyfire began selling a web browser in Apple’s App Store which would let users view Flash content by translating the videos into the native H.264 codec. Within five hours the app was pulled by the developer since their servers could not meet demand. Boom!

The immediate conclusion one can draw from this is that Flash is still very popular, despite Apple's campaign to replace it with HTML5. Within the five hours it was available in the App Store, Skyfire for iPhone became the top-grossing app, the third-highest paid app overall, and the top application in the Utilities category, as Oberhofer pointed out in his post.

It's just the most popular and required plugin for a modern web browsing experience. Not a big deal.

Enjoy your family.

Steve Jobs

Your just wrong, hard to believe . . .

Die in a fire.

Sent from my Droid

It got national news coverage before it was released. I saw packages on it on both Fox and CNN. I'm sure that boosted the numbers a bit.

So this is why Apple gave Adobe the boot a few weeks ago?

No, they (Jobs) have been anti Flash/Adobe since the iPhone launched. Now Apple is getting bad press for trying to stop flash yet here we're seeing demand beyond what the developers capacity can handle.

This will have zero net effect as Apple doesn't give a shit about what people want.

I hear the servers crashed............

ouch - I hear the loud sound of bandwidth suckage.

Axe

*sarcasm*
But flash sucks because it's slow...

HTML5 is the future! So go Apple! Down with flash!

( right now HTML5 content sucks even more resources than flash)

Works for me. Takes the videos a sec to load and play but it works. :)

yeah I got it yesterday, I dont surf a lot on my phone but its nice to have everything load when i do surf on it

Less, "People want Flash" and more, "People want (Flash) videos." I can't stand Flash but at the same time it is necessary to enjoy the vast majority of streaming video content online.

I personally have no issues with flash...
I personally have no issues without flash... :D

If Apple ever caves in and adds native flash support to their iDevices they better have a option to turn it off.

eh, flash, sucking up your battery to bring you animated ads. really the current implementation sucks for mobiles.

But flash sucks because it's slow...
Slow is tolerable. Excessive battery consumption is tolerable. Excessive security vulnerabilities are not. Proprietary solutions for delivering content on the web are not.

Resolve those two issues and I'll start 'embracing' Flash. Until then, I'd rather not have it on my mobile device. Simple as that.

I think most people could care less if its flash or not, its the content they want and right now its mostly flash.

So the title of this news is a little off imo.

I for one am pretty oblivious to how stuff are coded. I know that some stuff is Java or Flash but dont know what is where. As for apple refusing to allow it is just stupid. I know theres technology coming out thaat is getting rid of most f it, but till its here we are stuck with it. Well that us if your not using an iOS.

I just think its funny that they are making all their money off the iPhone.

While the other platforms are free.

"Excessive Security Vulnerabilities" is a funny way to say "Hey, I can run what -I- want on -MY- phone"

Know why Jobs fears flash? Cause flash is free, Flash works on about anything, and with flash being free everywhere, its not lining old Stevie's pockets because people can get their working games and software elsewhere then the Apple Store

I still wonder why there isn't a class action suit against apple for -FORCING- you to use The Apple Store if you want to do -ANYTHING- with something -YOU- purchased

Seriously, I bet if stevie had his way, he would lock out all the imac's etc as well from third party applications, and you would have to grab all apps through his store

They're probably going to release the iPhone 5 with some useless feature, then release the iPhone X with Flash support... that's apple for ya.

on the droid you can choose to manual enable content on a webpage so the ads dont load.

This app only converts video. It has nothing to do with people "wanting flash" and everything to do with them wanting to stream porn to their mobile device. This will disappear once the porn industry shifts to HMTL5, which is already underway.

Dear Steve (er Jobs, not our beloved in-house Steve!!), what's that crawling up your ass? (besides a gerbil) Oh yeah, your Apple Army, telling you what they want.

This was one of the first applications that I installed when I got my Galaxy S phone.
I mainly use it when there is a video I want to watch that I can not find on youtube. For example whole episodes of Legend of Neil.:)

Speak for yourself. Excessive battery consumption is not tolerable when you have two little girls playing PopCap games on your iPhone every chance they get :-P I need all of the battery life I can get out of it.

I'll welcome Flash to the iPhone only if they give us the ability to disable it, like how we're able to enable JavaScript functions. Perhaps make WAP browsing non-Flash and non-WAP browsing Flash enabled.

Oy vey.

I don't suppose you're aware of the fact that there are thousands and thousands of free apps in the App Store, aren't you?

I understand that HTML 5 is the future online media, but still Apple needs to bridge the gap in the mean time.

Honestly, I have to believe that At&t had a say in it too, because they will end up with a ton more traffic. If the ipod touch which is only wifi got flash support, then someone easily will port it to the iphone and ipad. Therefore, none of the IOS devices have flash support.

I wonder if skyfire will ultimately fail, because the cost of server side on conversion has to be expensive.

It's a good way to say that Flash is more likely to be exploited than any desktop or mobile OS. Pretty impressive for how limited it is, isn't it? I'm unsure if it's as bad as Java or the old QuickTime player (7 and earlier), but the state of its security is astonishingly poor. And unless it's implemented in a sandbox, Apple could only stand by and watch. Not a position they want to be in.

If Apple wants to support it on the iPhone/iPad, fine. But if it weren't entirely optional, it would be enough to make me consider abandoning the iPhone for something else. Thankfully there are still phones available that either don't support Flash or give me the option not to run it.

Ever hear of HTML 5? Do you know what ECMAScript and JavaScript are?

I gotta know. Are you using an iPhone?
Would it matter? I've had a distaste for Flash long before Apple came out against it.

I just want to watch GODDAM video on my iShit.

I could care less about flash animations in websites, so i don't mind ifmy iPod can see them ore not. It just sucks ass that apple is stop me from watch quality pron on it. :;

so don't buy an iPhone next time? Just a suggestion.

This is the biggest problem I have with the iPhone. The iPhone's nuts are held in a vice aka the AppStore.

^ This! I don't like Flash either, but it's effecitvely required for any modern browser. Maybe in 5 years when HTML 5 is the norm Flash can go away, but right now? Hell fraking no!
