Go ahead and laugh I am. I've got a dell with a pent d 3ghz dual core CPU, 2gb RAM, running vista. Id like to get back into gaming but the so will be pissed if I buy a console so I'm looking into this pc.

Res is 1024x768 on the monitor or 1280x720 on the tv. I know I need a new psu and video card for sure. I hope to play games like cod4 and others around that time period. What video card do you suggest and what psu? The mobo has a pci e slot too BTW its not agp old lol
 
You can get by with either the Nvidia GTS 450 or the AMD/ATI HD 5770. A good 350 to 450 watt power supply will be enough for those cards; consider the Antec Earthwatts EA-380 or EA-430 or the Corsair CX430 V2.
 
What kind of frame rate do u think ill get with no aa in cod4
 
I can't really tell you. Most of the benchmarks available online use relatively modern systems and high (1680x1050 or greater) resolutions. Plus, there's a chance that your Pentium D and 2GB of RAM could cause a performance bottleneck preventing you from maxing out your frame rates.

I can tell you that my brother is on a somewhat similar computer, but with a slower CPU and XP. He games at 1024x768 with a pcie 8600GT. You'd be surprised what you can get away with at that res. He keeps all the settings down, but he plays L4D2 and TF2 decently enough. You really might not need a new PSU either. With the die shrinks a lot of the low end GPUs don't use much power.

My disclaimer is that I haven't gamed on his computer or watched him game. He might be very tolerant to low fps. Personally, I think that you'd be fine if you don't mind turning off the eye candy. My GPU is out on RMA right now, and I have an 8600GT in it for now. I was able to play borderlands with 4 players at 1920x1080 with everything at minimum settings. I didn't check the fps. It was playable and I even won a couple duels, but it was pretty low.

If you're looking to play those older games, then you really don't need a big vid card upgrade. I played COD:MW 1 with a 3870, and a p4 and used high settings for the most part, on a 1280x1024 screen. I'm thinking a 4830 and a PSU from the FS/FT will do just fine.

get a new gf. if she has problem w/ you playing games, then she really need to find friends.

better yet, find a gf who likes to play so she can play w/ you!

You know, if you're a student, you could take advantage of Microsoft's back to school sale. Get a Windows 7 PC $699 or up and get a free Xbox 360.
 
I really don't want to tho. A used video card and psu should be under $100 easily

I disagree. I used to use a Pentium D system and it bottlenecked my 4670. My advice: buy a whole new system. Most games won't run smoothly.
