When PCI-E comes out will you upgrade right away, after prices fall (6 months or so), or will you upgrade at all?

Once prices stabalize and applications (games) catch up to the point where my 9700Pro starts feeling sluggish.

There's no point in trying to be first. Let someone else bug-test the new stuff while paying the premium to be first. Once it's matured a little and the prices are not bleeding-edge anymore then it's time to hop on the bandwagon.

i feel the same way...

BTX should be fun tho...and I thought computer cases were the only component that would not NEED an upgrade..

I guess the next big case mods will be those going through ATX to BTX conversions...that'll be tough.

I used to turn my cases upside down so the heatsinks faced up..now BTX has changed to that orientation....kewl
 
My card is dfinatly not bottlenecked by my agp 8x board so I'mprobably not going ot upgrade. If i need a new motherbaord and the higher end/better overclocking ones have it I'm not gonna run away.


If I have to pay more for it then with an agp 8x mobo simarlily equipped I probably wouldn't do it.
 
I won't be upgrading my motherboard cpu ram and video card all at once anytime soon(looks like itll be the requirements to get pci express, skip the upgrade on ram if I go the amd route again.) I have vested too much in my current system to want to throwit away right away.
 
when the current system i have now no longer suits me.

and after paying for this system entirely on my own for the first time, had better be a long... loooong time.
 
Probably not, the setup i have right now is doing alright so i'll hold off until i see the prices go down a bit.

I only upgrade based on the need to run software better than my current machine can (other than peripherals, because I upgrade things like monitors all the time;)). So until a game comes out that I like that I can't play competitively with my current rig, I've got no reason to change anything around.

I specifically couldn't care less about 'new' technology until there is a concrete reason for me to be using it --like much faster real world performance.

2005-2006.

Because PCI-E requires far fewer signal traces than PCI(-X) and has less strict tolerances, it is easier to design and produce mainboards with only PCI-E. From an OS's point of view there's no difference between PCI and PCI-E, as the whole initialization and addressing scheme stays the same, so no new drivers and/or drastic changes to BIOSs are required.

For these and other reasons (PCI-PCI-E bridge chips are easy to add to existing soundcards, NICs, etc.), OEMs and manufacturers of mainboards and expansion cards will embrace PCI-E.
 
I probably will if I've got enough cash. I'm on a XP 2000+ and a Geforce4 Ti4600. So I want to be able to upgrade in the distant future. I know the first wave of products to come out won't be perfect but they shouldn't be absolute shite either.
 
Only when I can afford a PCI-Ex vid card to go along with the mobo and a CPU that can significantly outperform my 1700+ @ 2.5GHz. I'll also have a hard time giving up my BH-5 memory in favor of DDR-2 :D

My crystal ball says about mid 2005 at the earliest will all of these conditions be met.
 
I just invested $2,000 in a system i'm finishing up now. I dont plan to upgrade again till 2005. Who cares if your system isn't the very best as long as it still kicks ass and is in the top running. Plus PCI Express and Prescott need time to mature and get on new motherboards and work things out. Intel will find a way to cool down Prescott in a few months and i'll be ready for it by early 2005.
 
yep. computer is ~2.5 years old now, i'll probably upgrade sometime this year, once socketT and socket939 boards have come out
 
Since I waited out the 800mhz boards, I plan the next build with BTX/PCI express, SATA II. Can already see the gaming demands on the system from UT2K4 and Far Cry (high perf reguires 2-3GHz and 1 GB ram etc.) and what the future is going to demand on systems. Going to need that next generation PCI Express vid card!
 
PCIE isnt enough to make me upgrade.

In my dream world I plan to wait till PCI-E, SAS(serial attached scsi) and QDR are here and when Intel has a new CPU out.

The only problem with this is that I love new hardware and a few steps down the road i'll see something "cool" and end up with a new box, hopefully with PCI-E at least.
 
No. I am planning on upgrading soon, and PCI Express doesn't seem to be coming into the plan. Neither does 939.
 
is there going to be some kind of an add on bridge that you can buy to use your agp video card on a pci express slot? because my motherboard is starting to die and i would like a new board soon, but i dont have money to spend on anything else.
 
Would PCI-E even yield any performance gains? I was under the impression that the move from AGP 4x to AGP 8x was almost entirely unnoticable on the geForce4 cards. I find it hard to believe that AGP 8x would be the bottleneck now, if AGP 4x wasn't the bottleneck a year or two ago.

Anyway, I won't upgrade, since I'm getting a laptop in around a year, and I don't think I need any upgrade between then and now. Except maybe a new video card to run World of Warcraft. But since UT2k4 demo runs just fine, I would assume that WoW would also. But who knows.
 
Intels always itchy to change something it looks like.

I dont think we need more bandwidth for sound cards, nics, modems, capture cards, usb cards etc. And according to 8x agp benchmarks, we dont need more bandwidth for video cards either.

I dont think the new standard is going to do much at all performance wise.

There is some justification for btx though, we dont need it yet, but we will as it starts penetrating the market. (for cooling reasons, then again a new standard for watercooling for atx cases would be cheaper and more effective)

Dont forget, intel has in the past choked on standards that everyone thought would be the "next big thing"
 
I want to, but money will be an issue. So probably when the hardware matures, and prices are affordable. I don't really need to upgrade anyways because my 9800pro still has a lot of life left, unless I kill it by overclocking it too much or something lol, and it can handle all the games that are out today and then some.
 
The only way I am upgrading to PCI express is when I buy a new motherboard and all the motherboards have it. Other than that I don't see any reason to upgrade. My system is quite sufficient for now.
