Hey everyone.

Sorry if this topic has been discussed, couldn't find it anywhere. But my question is, has anyone heard when we'll start seeing boards shipped with PCI-Express 2.0. I remember reading the specs off of Tomshardware.com but can't remember reading about a release to the market.

I'd like to consider upgrading sometime this year, but I'm afraid if I jump the gun I'll be mad if 2.0 comes out and will have to (want to) upgrade the motherboard again so I can have the feature, since the only thing I ever more constantly upgrade if my video card, I'll want to have the abillity to have 2.0.

And I guess my next question is, is this something to even really worry about. I remember reading the specs sound pretty impressive. Cause usually when I build my comp, I'll try to make it last 2 years at least (vid card subject to change), maybe 3.

Thanks for the help.

I would guess that unless there are big voltage changes in the bus, newer video cards will probably be PCIe 1/2 just like you can get AGP 4X/8X.

The new PCI Express 2.0 Bus Specification doubles the interconnect bit rate from 2.5 Gbps to 5 Gbps. PCI-SIG describes this bandwidth hike as “by far the most important feature of the PCI Express 2.0 specifications.” Doubling the interconnect bit rate increases the aggregate bandwidth of a single PCI Express x16 slot to 16 Gbps.

Also this will result in a change for power supplies as well.

You can also view what appears to be the new PCI-E power connector here on an ATI-AMD R600 OEM card. Look at the PCI-E 6-pin and then the 8-pin sitting right beside it.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Q3 this year for them to start showing up. It's the Bearlake chipset with ICH9, might be called 985 but they haven't announced a name yet. It also may have DDR3 support.
