EETimes is reporting that the PCI-SIG have completed work on the base spec for PCI Express 2.0. The new 2.0 spec effectively doubles serial signaling rates on the interconnect to 5GHz.

The base spec should pave the way for silicon support for Express 2.0 as early as this fall by companies including Advanced Micro Devices, Intel Corp and NVidia. Because the SIG chose 5 GHz signaling, chip makers are generally able to use serializer/deserializers (serdes) that have already been proven in communications applications up to 6.25 GHz.

no mention of more wattage on the supply, the only reason we would want pcie2 for the foreseeable future.

That would take a 16x lane up to 8GB full duplex (16GB total). Should make the Turbocache and HyperMemory cards quite a bit faster.

...and just when I am thinking about buying a new PC...

...the same thing happened to me last time when PCI-E originally came out. :(

There is no need for this.We still are not saturating the AGP 8x bus now with the latest games, not to mention the huge bandwith now available with PCI-Express 16x currently
on the market !!??

that's what i was going to say. i thought the current PCIe bus was totally underutilized?

someone edumacate me

You are correct in your understanding.

AGP4X + SBA is about the pinnacle of bandwidth requirements across a bus nowadays. AGP 8X (~2.1 Gb/s) has *no* current product that utilizes it 100%, let alone a product that is being stifled by it.

For a scale...

AGP 4X = ~1.05 GB/s
AGP 8X = ~2.1 GB/s
PCI-e x1 = ~ 0.25 GB/s
pci-e x 4 = ~ 1.0 GB/s
pci-e x 8 = ~ 2.0 GB/s
pci-e x 16 = ~ 4.0 GB/s

That's AVAILABLE bandwidth.

PCI-e is "250 MB/s per lane"
PCI is 133MB/s
So, PCI-e is only "less than double" pci.

P4 bus @ 200/800mhz = 6.4 GB/s
P4 bus @ 266/1066 mhz = 8.5 GB/s

Since the ENTIRE system you are running on probably, in and of itself, only has a 6.4GB bus, the 4.0GB bus of the video subsystem would be TOTALLY monopolizing the system if it actually needed all those lanes.

Ask the folks who run a dell poweredge SC420 server (like myself) with a PCI-e x16 card in a PCI-e x8 slot (although, I've moved to a pci-e x4 card since then)
There is NO discernable difference (either via usage, or benchmark) between the performance in the two slots.

ok, it's not about the need for it, it's about a reason to make more $$$$$

Ding, ding, ding! We have the winner. It is always about making more money on the latest gimmick. They never fully used AGP either and, then decided to chage back to pci or, pci-e. Now they have pci-e2, while not having utilized the current. Next Im waiting for agp-e to replace pci-e. It is a viscious cycle.

SATA 3.0 is not something most single users would notice either. A lot of this puter stuff is more sizzle than steak.

its like if chevy unveiled new tires that could travel at 1000mph, much faster than the previous 500mph, and they tell you the old ones are obsolete.. even though the car cant get faster than 150mph..

But what if V-tech kicks in, yo?
