1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
all of the above along with adobe premeire CS5 for some video work, but just some home video stuff i do sometimes.
mostly just play TF2, so i'm not not a big gamer anymore.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0 would nice for future options, RAID-0, E-SATA, firewire would be nice, but is not a deal breaker

i have been waiting for a 8 core intel setup, but it seems as though that is not going to happen anytime soon, so i am thinking about a 3930K CPU , newegg has them now for "only $499", but it seems as though that is $70 lower than i have seen for some time, i would get a 4x8GB set of memory for quad channel ram for a total of 32GB.
i do have a un-opened set of 3x4GB corsair vengeance 1600, 1.5 volt ram i won here on a drawing, so maybe i could use that along with the 4x8GB set i purchace, or even buy one single 4GB stick of corsair vengeance to add for a total of 48GB ?

i'm not sure if you can mix 4GB sticks with 8GB sticks and have them play nice ?

not sure what to do about a mobo, i do not need SLI or crossfire, but would like at least one or two PCI slots for old school stuff ?

i figured if the PC in my sig has lasted 5 years, a new highend system would last as long, i will probably get newer SSD drives soon if i can snag a killer deal.

and was toying with the idea of maybe doing a custom water cooler setup for CPU only, or will my old ultra-120 extreme work with a new bracket ?
 
Just how serious is your video work? I ask because it doesn't seem serious enough to warrant you buying that six core Core i7 3930K. In addition, how long a PC lasts is largely dependent on the user, not the hardware. If the user adjusts his expectations/needs, any PC can last for years.
 
well it can take about 15 to 25 minutes just to render some short 4 minute videos sometimes on my current Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz, and i would really love to speed things up, not sure how much faster a 3770K overclocked would be than my current PC ?

not pro work but would like to get more into it if i can find the time

60 to 70% faster give or take in video rendering and such.

Yeah I still wouldn't recommend the Core i7 3930K since that CPU is more oriented for those who are dead serious about video editing and the like.
 
what about the mobo and memory questions ?

i am still leaning towards the 3930K if i do this at all
 
I'm just gonna recommend a 3770K setup since I really don't think you should buy the 3930K since you're not doing serious video work:

$495 - Intel Core i7 3770K CPU + Asus P8Z77-V Intel Z77 ATX Motherboard
$120 - 2 x Corsair CMV16GX3M2A1333C9 2 x 8GB DDR3 1333 RAM

Total: $615 plus tax and shipping.

Do note that the above combo deal expires at the end of this month. In addition, if your planned purchase date extends into next year, do not buy the above parts at all and just wait until March to see if Intel releases their new Haswell CPUs.
 
well i just checked my newegg shopping cart that i made last nite, the ram i posted was at $99, and the CPU was at $499, today the prices went back up :(

the total was $830 or so, but now is back up to $950, dammit.
 
Yeah, considering that CPU wasn't worth it for you at $500, definitely not worth it at $600. And look, for $15 more than just the CPU alone, I managed to fit in the CPU, mobo, and RAM.

Also in regards to your Ultra-120 extreme question, unfortuantely you're about a year late as there was actually an adapter that would all you to use your Ultra 120 series with socket LGA 1155. But that adapter was discontinued by Thermalright about a year ago and they're very hard to find nowadays. So you're basically looking at a new HSF altogether. Which leads me to my next question: What case will you be using with this PC?

Go with the CM690 instead. It uses 120mm fans and has a bit more space than that older Coolermaster case. As for the HSF, I recommend this:
$90 - Noctua NH-D14 120mm and 140mm HSF

The mainstream Haswells will apparently only go up to quad-cores. You'll probably have to wait for the high performance/enthusiast in order to get the six-core or 8 core Haswells.
