PC Racing Games.

^^ ooooh....those look wicked good. See, its SO hard to determine what looks nice through compressed pics you find on game review sites. I think I'll find a demo for TOCA 3.

OMG wow. Is that game any good?
its awesome. tons of events and cars to choose from. they even slot car mode if u can get it unlocked.

multiplayer online is intense. having a wheel makes a huge difference in toca 3 though.

Those sure look like replay screens to me. I've played Toca and I don't remember it looking anything like that in game. And tho it's fun, I prefer the more realistic racing sim that is GTR2.

flatout 2 is on steam for $20 if anyone cares. i was wondering if its worth it but judging from some of the posts, it seems like it is.

qft...I played at 12x10 with 4xaa and 16xaf, and I don't ever remember it looking that good. I'm guessing those are just touched up screens sent out prior to the release of the game.

not to say it's a bad looking game by any means, but just not THAT good looking.

Of course they are replay shots, do any of them look like camera angles you would use while racing? I don't think they are retouched though, look at the angularity on the tires and the ailising (jaggies) on diagonal lines, they are definetely in game. I played the game today and I could see replay's looking just like those shots. Gameplay looks the same, just less exciting camera angles.

just reserved my copy of Forza Motorsports 2 for the 360 today, release day at Gamespot/EBGames is Feb 2nd :D

oops, it said PC racing games....my bad

Spend the money on the G25. It will seem like a lot of money but if you are getting serious with your racing you will never regret it :)

GTR 2 I would recommend for sure. GTL is underestimated it´s a brilliant sim.

Richard Burns Rally is a MUST own for everyone.

For Arcade I would pick FlatOut 2 over TRD 3 anyday. Codemasters just can´t get the steering right for wheels I don´t get it how they can fail so hard every time...

Their PC games is just straight console ports I suspect. An oldie but goldie is F1 99-02 if you can get hold of that.

really fun game, make sure you at least have an analog controller (logitech, XB360 controller etc), and I think it supports rumble effects if your controller does.

I picked up the Momo after comparing w/ Driving Force Pro and G25 in Fry's. The DFP had paddles the size of my thumbs and a looked a bit too "consolely" IMO. The G25's shifter felt clumsy and the lack of more than 2 buttons on the wheel kills that option for me. Shame too, cause the pedals are CRAZY nice.

I've gotten in about 5 hours of GTR2 w/ the Momo and marvel at the improvement from a Wingman Formula Force. That wheel had an almost hard vinyl w/ some "fight me for the wheel" FORCE feedback. The Momo has what I'd call "force FEEDBACK" in that it aids my driving...and pulls me in. I can feel the tires begin to sleep underneath, the acceleration, braking, everything can be felt from the wheel!

Jodiuh can you return the wheel?

I am not saying that the MOMO Racing is all bad but the DFP and G25 do grow on you the more you use it.

DFP yes it looked like a toy I was all but impressed when I got it. But it´s really smooth and it has much better force feedback then the MOMO Racing. It will also last longer. As for the buttons yeah that is the issue you may get. You tend to get double shifting when they wear down though I am not sure the MOMO Racing pedals is more robust...

G25 yes you loose buttons but man the FFB, precision everything is so so much better then the DFP and MOMO Racing. The Shifter I agree there is absolutely no feel to it. It works but it´s not that fun to use. But it works perfectly as a button bay if you don´t want to use a keyboard or similar which is a bit harder.

In a sim like GTR 2 it´s very important to have good pedals and it´s so much more fun to run with clutch :)

I would say return the MOMO racing and get the G25 if you have the money. If you don´t really have it okay get the DFP...

You will get a bit disturbed the first hours but then you focus more on your driving and how it feels then your wheels esthetics and then it really don´t matter that much ;)

Hahahahaha, I'm still on auto man. Novice FTW!! I may pick up a DFP and compare the two of them, we'll see. Fry's has a 30 day return, no worries. :p

Not that they use a clutch in FIA GT. I think it'd be more fun in something like Test Drive unlimited, but where is the feel in the clutch? All the setups I've found are lifeless, but perhaps the G25 is different.

They do use it. You don´t need to use it when gearing up or down but it depends on your driving style really.

You must use it at start naturally and to not to stall if you get in the sand or spin off ;). It also helps to correct slides so there is still use of clutch in the simbin sims.

TDU I think may be to arcadey but still I do really like the idea of them forcing you to run manual in cars that only has it and support the G25 to the fullest :). But it´s yet to see how good TDU can get...

I know it can be used, but a sequential manual is much faster and more accurate for FIA GT racing. I thought all the cars used a sequential box in official GT racing...

Of course, I wouldn't give up the six speed in my real car for anything that resembled a flappy paddle or sequential gearshift :D

The G25 is leaps and bounds better then the Momo and DFP. I had the same thoughts as you when I first saw the G25, "Ahh man, only 2 buttons on the wheel!". But I use the left/right paddle for left/right views, the left button on the wheel for the handbrake, and the right button for the horn :p

The buttons on the shifter are kind of awkward, but once you get used to them, they arent bad. I use the lower 4 red buttons for tire temp, damage, brake info, and pit info, then the top 4 black buttons for preset sayings for online play. I dont even use the dpad. I should map the d-pad to the left/right/up/down keyboard buttons so I can change the pit info without touching the keyboard.

The G25 isnt perfect, but its one of the best on the market. I dont have any complaints on the pedals, they are great. The wheel is amazing, no complaints there. I love the larger diameter wheel, the FFB is the best of any wheel i have tried, the FFB is a LOT quieter then the loud annoying whine that is the DFP, and its leather which is very comfy! The shifter is ok, the buttons are awkwardly placed, and the shifter is 'light'. Its designed well, I never miss a shift, but it just feels too 'light' in the throws. In sequential mode, theres good resistance between up and downshifts, much better then the H-shifter mode. But the shifter is the only thing in the setup I may consider replacing as I never use sequential, always H-shifter. But even so, at $300 its very well priced for the quality.

It really just depends how 'into' race sims you are. If you only play offline then you probably wont need the G25, but if you play online, its a great investment. I am much faster in my times now then I was ever with my DFP. Its probably just because I use 720* rotation and the DFP cant countersteer fast enough when the car starts to oversteer. But with the G25, wheel rotation is very fast and crisp!

Enough about the G25, lets talk about LFS!

I thought you talked about the clutch not the shifter?

There is cars that only has six speed like most of the porkas. Most have sequential and one or two even use the pedals.

As for there yes the GT cars are to fast for six speeds though some NGT cars it´s quite usable in. Though you are of coursee always slower using 6-speed then sequential but it´s so much more fun :)

I got a SST Lightning shifter though it´s not that fun with the G25 shifter.

Well they go hand in hand don't they! Nobody has a clutchless h-gate shifter huh?

I just meant that real FIA GT cars use a sequential gearbox, and therefore no clutch (at least as far as I'm aware). Perhaps I'm wrong.

Yes you are and you aren´t.

They all have a clutch and must use it at times but when actually racing it´s enough to blip the throttle on up and downshifts. Unless you want to save the gearbox in 24h races you just blip the throttle to match the revs on up and downshifts without engaging the clutch.

They only have semiautomatic gearboxes and some have fully manual gearboxes.

You can actually run quite well without auto clutch even if you don´t have one. You can map the clutch button to the wheel if you only have a 2-pedal system.

I was under the impression that the clutch was automatically engaged and that the ECU blipped the throttle on the downshifts for the drivers....maybe I'm thinking of the wrong series.

Anyway, I think I'm going to leave the proper manual to my car, and I'll stick it out with my Momo for now. Rest assured, if I could justify $300 for the G25 I would, but I don't think it'll happen any time soon.

quad nad yes by default. By untick the "auto clutch" option and then go driving :).

Then you have to manually match revs or it becomes really unstable. Though GTR 2 is extremely forgiving but you will surely noticed you loose stability if you don´t engage the clutch.

GTL there it requires real skill to drive without auto clutch enabled.

sorry to bump this old ass post...i just picked up RACE by the same ppl that made GTR2 off of steam. downloading now. anyone else have it? got pretty decent scores from IGN and Gamespot. Finally found my logitech dual action so i can actually have some fun this time lol

logitech dual action. Well Race is another game you really must have a wheel for ;).

It´s quite different to GTR/GTL much depends if you like the cars. The car selection and track selection is quite limited.

RACE is excellent, I have my mini-review in the main PC Gaming Thread.

This is true. I'm not exactly that hardcore about it...but its a lot better than using the keyboard and mouse lol. As for the track and car selection...yeah I noticed it was limited. Kinda sucks. Judging from the forums set up for the game, it looks like you can't really do custom content for it either. They're only gonna release official packs or something. Guess I shoulda picked up gtr2? lol

Yeah but don´t count on any extra car packs or something it´s not Simbins way of doing it...

I think that is what you are getting from it.

GTR 2 is nice and is open for modding. Have some nice ones already. Otherwise there is rFactor. I haven´t liked it much but now it got mods like F1 1979...

Now to have any fun with that mod you have to dedicate your life to it lol.

GTR 2 is easy to drive but hard to go fast so you don´t need to be super skilled to have fun with it. off line at least you may have trouble keeping up on-line without tons of practise ;)

Get the G25 if you are really into driving games...

now if I could only find or build a decent racing seat/setup to go with it...

I use the playseat...

It´s especially good for me since I have a 32" widescreen I get to close if I sit at the desk...

Otherwise you could buy a used racing chair and race it as much as needed if you clamp your wheel to the desk :). Cheaper then a playseat.

yeah, toca 3 graphics are awesome.
TOCA 3 is just plain awesome period. GTR2 and RACE are pretty good as well but require a little more skill. All three games look great. I will admit that the scenery is pretty shitty but the detail of the cars is great. You really have to experience these games with a 8800GTX, the texture filtering and ability to crank up the AA makes a HUGE difference.

You won't go wrong with either of those three games. I played around with the beta's of LFS but I no longer own a proper steering wheel setup to really enjoy that game. All of them really require a wheel but TOCA 3 is a little more forgiving when it comes to using an analog gamepad.

Toca race driver series no they are straight ports from the 360. It´s not the same game as the old Toca series ;)

Anyone know a place I can buy Toca 3? Just played the demo, it was awesome. I can't seem to find it at any major online stores... :(

As an Amazon Associate, HardForum may earn from qualifying purchases.
I noticed the Windows Marketplace has Toca 3 for pretty cheap....and you download it too..no need to go to the store or wait for it to ship.

Most Fry's stores carry TOCA 3 for around $14.99. Every now and then you can find it on the website or at outpost.com for $9.99 + shipping.
