Hey

first off please excuse typos in this... im not on my own pc as i will explain...

For some stuiped reason, i installed xp a while backon a 35GB HDD, and this was alright as i planned to use vista on my main ard drive, but after i realised vista wasnt for me... i had already got a few programs installed on the xp hard drive and didnt want to start all again so i just continued to use it. but now its full. so i decided i would unplug my cd drive momentarily and put all my videos onto to other drive, to keep this one from being totally full.

so i shutdown the pc.... then went out and came home and decided to put it on first, i put it on and it got halfway through the black page with the white writing and stopped, just where it usualy detects all the ide drives. so i shut it down, opened it up. took out the IDE cable from the disk drive and went to put it into the hard drive, but when i put it into the hard drive, the pc started powering on and off, as tho i was touching or moving something but i was not aware of touching anything.

i took out the cable from the pc as i was scared of an electric shock, and put the ide and molex cables into the hard drive, plugged the cable back into the power supply. pressed the power button

and nothing?

the light is on on the motherboard so obviously the pc has power, i tried an old switch from anoher pc and that didnt work either

im stumped? totally.
after this, a few hours later. i decided i would move the switch on the back of the PSU from 230 to 115 and when i did a blue flash came out of the PSU and now the motherboard light was on, i dont know what this switch is for and i gess it was a bad idea moving it. think i have definatly fried the psu now!? but apart fromthis it sounds like a motherboard problem to me?
 
i think that switch changes the setting for how many volts ar coming from the wall socket, not sure tho. do you have another motherboard to test with, and another psu ? try those.
 
negative on both.

my power supply is definitely broken now because the motherboard light won't even come on. Just away to order a new one then i thnk i will atleast need a new motherboard too
 
Where do you live? might just be you are getting the wrong power to the PSU.
 
well unless your in the uk the psu switch shouldnt be on 230 in the first place.. a blue flash from psu would clarifiy that your psu is fried.. replace the psu if nothing comes up then you might as well get a new rg because it could have fried ram,mobo or cpu or anything else..

i remember my days when i had a tendencey of messy with comp parts when i knew nothing about them but now look at me i can buidl one blind folded. anyways reaplce psu try to boot if nothing part out or trash it or better yet go to a shooting range and tell some guys youw ant it filled with bullets and make a video of it while they do it :-D
 
Yeah you pretty much screwed up your power supply.

Anyway, you should've just used a screwdriver to short the two pins for power. If it didn't srtart then, then the mobo was screwed up. But now we may never know since that power supply may have taken out your mobo, cpu, RAM, hard drive ,etc.

So, get a new PSU and if that doesn't work for you, then your system is officially dead.
 
hey guys, got a new psu today and its still not working
i am in the UK

i think it is the motherboard that is broken so i will go get a new one, but if that doesnt work i wll probably end up replacing everyhng, im feeling lucky and hopefully the psu only took out itself!?
