PC Gaming, will it END?

The only PC game I play anymore is CS:S. I keep considering upgrading to a used 8800 series from my x1900xt but... why?? I play my PS2 and N64 way more than PC. I can only imagine if I had a PS3 or 360.

I don't think PC gaming is going anywhere....they can blame pirating all they want but when it comes down to it, UT3 and Crysis were not that great...release a good game and you'll make a profit...make shit and you won't..

a. Crysis was a great game, and virtually every renowned critic can attest to that:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/crysis

A game that's not great does not earn a 91 average.

b. Crysis sold well over a million copies months ago, and is on pace to sell 2 Million + by years end, and stands to sell even more thereafter as more users systems catch up to the demands of the game.
Crytek have already made a positive return on their investment, and every subsequent unit sold = more profits towards their bottom line.

And as to the OP, PC gaming isn't going anywhere.
It is arguably more lucrative as an industry and pushes more units of software than any single console on the market.
PC accounts for 30% ($2.76B) of US gaming market and is projected to grow 14% this year

Besides, who really prefers to play their games on a handicapped system, with limited and inferior well...everything. I guess console advocates, that's who.

Yeah. Crysis is simply ahead of the hardware...like Oblivion was before G80.

I must say if PC gaming ever ends, which I really don't see happening, my gaming days will be over. I just can't get into console games except for certain genres mainly fighting and driving. I have a 360 and a wii and haven't turned them on since before Xmas.

every system is a handicapped system when it comes to crysis.

Sure if you want to run it on nonexistent Ultra settings whilst having the AA bumped up to rediculous levels.

However, I am able to run it very fluidly (i.e. 30-40 FPS) throughout 90+ % of the game at 1600x1200, with 16xAF and 2x edge AA on a custom Very High config.

Handicapped, I think not.
In fact my system (which is modestly powerful) is capable of running it better than what 90% of all console games run, which for the most part are locked at 30 FPS and at 1/2 (and often 1/3) the resolution.

huh?? modestly powerful? a quad core with a 9800gtx is modestly powerful?

you are either an idiot, or just wanted to draw attention to your e-peen

yeah people should stop saying nothing can run crysis. look at the benchmarks, a quad and a 9800 gtx can.

1080P = 1920 X 1080, Multiple TVs accept 120Hz. 22"monitor is 1620 X 1050 @ 60 or 75Hz.
I'm also going to go ahead and call BS on your crysis specs, as only a few days ago Hard OCP offered evidence to the contrary.

That said, the Xbox360 is running an IBM POWER cpu and ATI's R500, the precursor to the R600. The PS3 is of course running the legendary wicked at folding Cell with its 8ALUs and QDR memory, and rumors stipulate a G70. None of the afformentioned hardware can compete with a modern Yorkfield and HD4K or Geforce 8 computer.

id otn think it will end BUT it will get less and less common. consoles are taking over. they are getting all the big hit games and exclusives while pc gaming is getting ports after ports, after ports. i was gunna build a new pc rig but decided not to and went off and bought a ps3. the only difference between and ps3 and pc is that umm??? infact they are near identical!

what ps3's can do that a pc can:

install games on hdd,
install OS on it ie linux.
folding at home
browse the internet
attach almost any type of usb device such has keyboard, mouse, joypads and even the logitech g25 wheel!
upgrade the hdd

what it cant do:
upgrade the graphics card, ram, cpu etc.

and how much does it costs? half the price of a cheap quad core gaming rig.

It costs more than my mobo, CPU, GPU and 4 gigs of ram added together and I wouldn't call my system slow ;)

it won't die. i'll pay for a game if it doesn't suck. ut3 sucked ass

Modestly powerful is a relative term.

There are people out there with 9800 GX2 systems that run Crysis better than mine.
There are 8800 GTX SLI systems that run it better.
There are 9800 GTX SLI systems that run it better.
There are 9800 GX2 SLI systems that run it better.
There are 8800 GTS SLI systems that run it better.
There are 8800 GT SLI systems that run it better.
There are 3870X2 SLI systems that run it better.

Yes, modestly powerful in a relative sense.

Most definitely can.

Before you impetuously call BS on my claim, let me just note a few things.

First of all, either HardOCP are rather clueless as to what it takes to optimize Crysis, or just prefer not to for the sake of benchmarking so as to not obfuscate the results.
For those whom are intellectually curious however, then may I direct your attention to my tweak guide/thread:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1265845

Secondly, HardOCP were benchmarking Crysis in DX10 mode.
I however am reporting performance results under DX9 mode.
Repeat after me, DX9 mode offers a significant performance boost over DX10 mode.
Get it? Got it? Good.

Thirdly, would you care for a FRAPS demonstration of screenshot after screenshot, level after level, of Crysis running on my rig?
90+ % of the time I guarantee you it will be between 30-40 FPS at the aforementioned settings.

I think [H] has mentioned several times they've elected not to tweak the game w/console commands, etc. because they're trying to limit the test to simply what's available under the in-game menus... Which is all most gamers will likely touch anyway. Personally, I just don't think Crysis is very well optimized compared to other games/engines out there... Idk how Crytek expects to make money off that engine in the near future (if they even hope to).

Although hamidxa doesn't realize it. He demonstrates one of the reasons PC gaming isn't as popular as it could be.

You shouldn't need a damn tweak guide to play a game smoothly, and I'm sure [H] agrees which is why the benchmarks are what they are.

Many people just don't have the time or the desire to scavenge the internet for 'super space marine killer's awesome config.

ah yes...i forgot about this thread..

I wanted to say this a few days ago when it popped in my head..

PC gaming "appears" to be dying, but yet where are tv's going? Tv's are going to be PC's themselves in a few years, Samsung has already released theres although i think it is around 50k right now. But either way, The Xbox/PS3 they will become full fledged pc's, unlikely on there next release but the following most definitely, Xbox will definitely run windows at some point(probably a stripped down version on the next Xbox 720 or whatever its going to be called, Sony will have to decide what they want to do,

But bottom line is that tv's themselves will become PC's within the next 5yrs, and people will not need to go out and buy a gaming system hopefully(if these tv's computer parts are upgradeable like our current pcs)

Anyway thats my rant :)
