PC Gaming standards website

Well It's been a long time since I started PCGS, just over a year now in fact.

There has been a massive lack of updates for the site and I wanted to change that, so I've recently started adding a load of games, there's now 100 and I've got a whole bunch more I need to add, they're all downloading on steam at the moment so they will be added as/when I get them, over the next week or so.

As always the site remains advert free, it's not here to make money just to give something back to the gaming community I hope you all find at least some of the updates helpful. If anyone can contribute with game information please contact me on the forum. I'm also looking for people to help me admin the site if you have lots of games you're willing to test/add :)

Happy fragging!

Can you toss in a category for forced letterboxing on non-widescreen monitors (like America's Army 3)?

Thats pretty much what the horz+ catagory is for, if the image doesn't scale with the screen at the right aspect ratio then it doesn't pass horz+ widescreen properly. Letterboxing is caused by doing widescreen with vert- but not scaling the screen, which I believe is anamorphic? (it's been a while!)

What about a dedicated server check box? Seems like one of the more important things to me on the PC platform.

I did consider that when MW2 came out, I really just wanted to wait to see if it was going to become common, thankfully most games still have dedicated servers. If it ever does become common I will revist the idea.

I'm also thinking about console access, been considering that off/on for a while, something that has been removed recently from a lot of games, it stops a lot of advanced tweaking. I'm also disliking forced frame rate caps.

I'm wondering about maybe a "triple buffering" column?

Other things to consider would be window mode support, multi-monitor support, surround/eyefinity, 3D?

I just saw this thread and the site and one thing bothers me.

For some games you tag things as failures that really shouldn't be. SC2 uses DX9, hardware AA doesn't work because of their rendering methods. Nvidia and ATI provide driver hax around it, but there's nothing the devs can do outside of using DX10 onwards.

well, maybe it is a failure that devs are still using DX9. :)

Triple buffering I just use D3DOverrider. Eyefinity, 3d, etc is all driver related so I don't see a need there either.

Isn't vert- when you just use a 4:3 aspect ration and chop off some of the top and bottom of the screen like early Far Cry 2 or Bioshock?

Pure Vert- is when you lock the horizontal FOV and change vertical FOV to fit the aspect. Your base FOV can be based on whatever aspect the game was designed for. I guess it's called Vert- since base FOV was based on 4:3 or 5:4 for the longest time. Nowadays most base FOV is based on 16:9 due to games being designed for console HDTV 16:9 aspect.

The main issue is that it breaks triple wide aspects and makes the FOV unplayable at super wide aspects.

Ideally you'd want Hor+ no matter what...

Well it's a similar effect, they don't really use a 4:3 aspect ratio and then chop it, there is no aspect ratio that is default as such, it's just the way the FoV scales with the aspect ratio

Vert- is where the vertical FOV is decreased to provide a wider aspect ratio, rather than expanding the horizontal FOV. Usually this is done by clamping one FOV either horizontal or vertical and then altering the other FOV to get the desired aspect ratio, in vert- the horizontal FOV is clamped so no matter how wide your monitor it always displays the same horizontal FOV in game, which is obviously stupid.

You should add a supports 5.1 audio check too :p Liking this site.

The site looks very professional, but as a web designer I gotta say you really, really, really have only one problem with the design.

The bar that displays "Home", "News", "forum" etc is very outdated and looks very dull and 1995ish..... especially the text (maybe just change the font?)

But What I suggest is this (easy html and images is all ya need to change)

****Make a few images for each "button" (maybe orange background for each button, with each HOME,NEWS,FORUM button text in black). Then make a 2nd copy of each button for each and change only change the text color from BLACK to WHITE (or whichever you think looks good).

Now the HTML part... look for HOVER HTML code so when the user hovers his mouse over each button, it changes from home1 button (the one with black text) to home2 button (the one with white text). It looks pretty spliffy, believe me..... easy ta do!

HERE's A DEMO of what I mean: http://www.onderhond.com/testpages/html-image-hover.html

and the link how to do it, is on the bottom

Thanks for the input Luxor, I might make a few minor changes to the menu and add hover over attributes as you suggest. I hadn't planned on tinkering with the design too much I wanted to focus my efforts on adding new games as the database is still quite small.

No prob, looks very good man... thanks for making such a useful and informative site for PC gamers to use! :)

It's the 2nd year anniversary for PCGS, I've re-written the original post of this thread. I hope gamers continue to find this useful, please take a few minutes to give me some feedback good or bad, I appreciate all comments, thank you.

Nice site. I like the Hor+ column. Windowed/Borderless would also be a valuable column to have, as it can make alt+tab a joy - TF2 and SC2 are examples of games that have excellent borderless windowed support. Also, post WSGF site update most of those links no longer work :(

Thanks for pointing that out, I'll make sure to check the new WSGF links and update the database.
