PC doesn't boot up fully

Sorry I didn't have time to search through the forums. Problem is as follows:

My bro's pc, booted up normally, no abnormal beeps or sounds but then froze at a black screen just before going into windows xp. What could've caused this? Also I had him turn it off and wait a while, he tried it once more before he left for work and it booted into windows normally. So I dunno. This has also been happening on my mother's computer, but that thing will freeze up and stuff in windows, then a restart will fix it, but sometimes, once or twice it wouldn't go into windows and stop at the same black screen. Could it be a virus or something? I've built all the computers myself with the same os and programs basically, for antivirus and spyware, but my pc is fine, lol. So any help is appreciated, thanks a lot.

alright, little update here. I've got the computer to boot into windows, basically just turned it off and then on again. But I wanted to test it so I restarted it a few times and twice in a row it froze and wouldnt' go into windows xp. It's just a black screen with a blinking white cursor type thing at the top left corner. After turning the pc totally off and then waiting a little, turned it on again and it went into windows. Temps are like 45 for cpu and 27 for mobo.
 
Have you updated any drivers or installed any new software? One or the other could be the problem. You may want to try updating drivers if you have not done so.

Bad shutdowns could also cause this. They may need a reinstall of the OS but I would do that as a last resort.

I'd bet money that I simple format and reinstall will resolve the problem. IT might be a pain in the ass, but there's a good chance that will fix it.
 
yes, but why? why the hell would that pc have the problem and mine (exact same setup) not? Oh yeah, and it wouldn't be a small inconvience, just like a huge one, that's all. I'm avoiding that at all costs.

Some software will do this. I just got done with cleaning out my mom's computer of programs that were recently installed because it was doing the same thing. I knew it wasn't a hardware problem. It turned out to be a game she had installed for my son while he is down there. The game was made for Win9x and didn't play nice with WinXP. It had nothing in the startup or anything but still caused it. Any little piece of software can cause problems like this.

 
the only recent stuff was hp programs that came with the printer he bought, I dunno, I'll look through the software I guess.
