PC Build Help

- The GTX 460 was already overkill for your 17" monitor. Unless you're planning on getting a 24" monitor and actually playing the games at 1920x1080, getting the GTX 470 would be a waste of money.

Hi Danny,
1. Is it a good idea to get a 5870 instead? I heard the 6xxx series is coming out and the 5xxx series price is going down. Would like to know your comment please.
2. Will this case support the Thermaltake 750W

1) No. Again, the GTX 460 is already overkill for your 17" monitor. Unless you're planning on getting a 24" monitor and actually playing the games at 1920x1080, getting the HD 5870 would be a waste of money.

To repeat myself again: Unless you're planning on getting a 24" monitor and actually playing the games at 1920x1080, getting the GTX 470, HD 5850, HD 5870 or HD 6xxx series GPU would be a waste of money. In fact, the GTX 460 is already a waste of money for a 17". Even the HD 5770 would be enough for that res. But at least the GTX 460 isn't as large of a waste of money as the other cards mentioned (except for the HD 5770)

So unless you like to be stupid and wasteful with money, don't go any higher than the GTX 460 for a 17" until you're actually playing on a larger monitor.

2) Yes. but that Thermaltake PSU is completely overpriced considering that you can get a similar quality PSU $112 AUD less:

I agree. $112 AUD is a huge amount to pay just to save only about 20W to 30W worth of electricity from the mains. At that rate it would have taken significantly longer than the estimated useful life of these PSUs for the pricier 80+ Gold certified PSUs to pay for themselves in electrical savings. Besides, the Antec TP750 is already 80+ Bronze certified - and there is not much difference in power consumption between an 80+ Bronze and an 80+ Gold PSU with otherwise identical specs. As a result, the much pricier but slightly more efficient PSUs are worth buying only if you're in an area that has obviously higher-than-average electric rates (a high electrical cost per kW/h).

Hi Danny/E4g1e,
What would be the difference between the 460GTX Gigabyte vs MSI Cyclone/Hawk Edition - quality and performance wise?

Roughly the same quality IIRC, Performance difference isn't that great between the two cards
