I have a seagate 7200.10 320Gb hdd.

I have a drive I call Z: for general files, no programs. Then my OS and all game/programs are on drive C:

I am about to reformat my pc to see if a persistant problem I have is software related.

So Partition Magic has the drive layed out as you would see in disk management in windows administrative tools. i am assuming the right side of the bar is the outside of the drive and the inside of the bar is the inside of the drive spindle. Please correct me if I am wrong.

So should I change the C: portion of the drive so that it is on the outside of the spindle to improve application performance?

The left side of the bar represents the beginning of the drive. Which on all hard drives also happens to be the outside edge. The outside edge will usually have a higher sustained transfer rate.

The right side of the bar is of course the opposite.

In your post, you have things reversed. And in your case, it sounds like its already setup correctly.

Yep!

What I do is inmediately defrag after a fresh install.

I use Vopt for the defrag is very fast. Vopt also can move your pagefile after a fresh install to be sure that it is on the fastest part of your HD.:)

Vopt: http://www.vopt.com/nuvopt8.htm

as well as Diskeeper.. it organizes your most used files to the faster areas of the disk.. but you have to keep the agent running to utilize this feature.

That vopt program is pretty cool. Is it not that much more efficient than the windows one, hence no as popular?

I know it's very fast maybe not as many features but very fast defrag and replacing the pagefile is enough for me.

I don't think that a sofisticated way of defragging realy speeds up your computer that much more with NTFS. Better is a regular fast batch defrag.

I used diskeeper also for a while but it is to sofisticated for its purpose and running in the background all the time I don't like. It's a good prog but better is a nice fast standalone defrag. Not more not less just what you need.

Well compared to the windows its a lot more efficient. Typical windows defragments still leaves the general masses cluttered. After finishing this and going to windows and making an analysis, its a blue block, lol.

Ok yeah yourright in fact I have forgotten how a windows defrag looks like.

But I remember you had to use the windows defrag several times....

Yeah, I remember now,...yes indeed Vopt is much more efficient too. ;)
