Ok, so I have an E6300 sitting here with its stock cooler. I am using an old case I got with a gateway back in 2000 (big, adequate cooling), and I was wondering, with the praises that people have been heaping on the stock intel coolers, were those experiences with the pre-applied thermal pads, or with thermal paste?

Here's a picture of the case. I used a dremel tool to open a grill in the lower front portion of the case, and mounted a fan behind it, so I have some front air intake, albeit limited.

Got mine to 2.8 GHz with Intel thermal pad and fan set to run full speed all the time (i.e. completely stock setup). Was a bit loud but tolerable.

I dont think its the stock heatsink that is so great but instead the processor. :p

Care must be taken during the stock heatsink install to ensure all four retention pins are fully seated and it requires a lot of force to seat them. Do it before you put the MB in the case.

Thanks. Yea I have been reading that the HS is a bitch to install. Not that installing it in the case is an option with my craptacular box.:D

Heh, if I read you post right, it was free and it will work, that puts it on my list of top 10 cases in the world :) Anyone can go buy a $400 case but only us [H]ard ones will cut holes and make it work for free ;)

You got it, man. I was also debating if I should add a side panel fan in there, over the CPU to pump air in or out. Either way free is free! Well, not considering that the system back then cost me $1500.
