HP is doing it because people are so damn stupid that they'll think they just got multiple copies of one license otherwise, and often lose them before they can use the keys if there are any on them.

This inefficiency of packaging is over just that, people being stupid. Yes. they could have used an envelope, but a huge box just gets the point across so much better.

Paper companies plant trees specifically for making paper. As long as you're using paper instead of plastic (which does not biodegrade) you're fine.

maybe lazy people do not want to fold up all those boxes for recycling so they just ship them out instead.
