P4's 3ghz+ worth it?

I have a few northwod P4's systems that are 3ghz and above. i found a place that i can set them up but i am wondering if it is even worth it. i have not used F@H for a very long time so hence my question.

whats it worth to you? If power costs are nothing to you, then go ahead. Are you capable of setting them up into a rig with a bare PCIe slot? If so then you can enter the giveaway and get a free card out of it maybe. If not, then its up to you. I used to fold on two P4's, not worth much but they still do stuff. If you have to pay for power or have to set up all the rigs (like they are peices and not running units) then I'd say you make the call. They are good enough to run a 4 GPU rig but not good enough to make killer points on their own

Just dont expect 4 digit PPD from each of them

If not, sell them online here, youll raise enough from them to get a cheap core2 or 2 and then you can get some points from those. I keep one P4 around just so I have a spare 775 chip if I need it, but I think they are still going for 20-35 on FS/FT, sell em there if you dont wanna bother with them folding and youll get enough to get a decent CPU

I'd love to see ya enter the contest.

If not, I'd sell the systems on Ebay and get a basic GPU folding rig. You will get 2-3x the points with much much less power draw.

If your picky, you can put together a GPU rig with a 8800GS for about $120, $150. Much less if you have extra parts laying around. If you net $40 out of each of the system, you should be able to get a rig up.

Are they 478 or 775 chips? You could get a cheap MOBO with pci-e and fold with a VC in them.

I used to BORG on a 2.8GHz Pentium D (each running 2 instances of the uni client). Each core delivers a 500-point WU about every 2 days or so running 24/7. Should be similar with your P4s.

they are 478 chips. the systems are complete and the power would not cost me anything. i had them running many years ago when i folded.

If no cost of power, fire 'em up!

While they run, have them listed on FleaBay for $50 plus shipping.

Get money, make folding box. You = teh winnar!

You won't see much in the way of points out of them as they are now.

At the moment, I have two regular single core clients running on my buddy's Q6600@3.0. Both clients are currently working on 225 point work units doing about 265PPD each. I believe that's about the worst PPD unit they have out right now, or at least the worst I've seen, but it's also the most likely work unit these clients have been getting. There are some other work units which would allow the system to do up to 1400PPD combined on both clients but they seem to be very hit and miss.

What I'm basically saying is the P4 isn't going to do anywhere near the production of the Core2 system. It's been a while since I've run anything on a P4 but I'd be surprised if you got even close to 75% of the production of the Core2 on a clock for clock basis. I would guess you probably won't get much better than 150PPD out of a single system.

If that production is worth it to you, then start running them. If that production isn't worth it, I'd suggest looking at a way to sell the systems and use the money for another machine with much better PPD which any Core2 or Phenom2 system would do. That would allow you to run the SMP client for better PPD as well as being able to use a video card which can fold for additional PPD.

instead of buying a GPU or building a GPU rig, I'd suggest building a CPU folder (dual or quad core) that has room for GPU's but dont buy them yet, spend your money getting the best CPU/mobo/ram combo you can, try to get one that can run multiple video cards, then go for video cards later. There are plenty of give-aways here right now that you could try your luck on. If you have to, pick up a 8800 GS or equivelant (96 shader) card for simple video but I'd focus on CPU/mobo for now. Then, later you could pick up a few more cards and toss them all in the same rig. I had 3 96 shader cards in a rig with a P4 and they were netting about 13-14 +k for a good day, that would be WAYYYY more than those P4's would net, and power usage and heat would be much lower, along with physical size and maint. times

I'm running WCG under Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell box with a 2.53 P4 Northwood ... it completes work units in 10-12 hours (7 hours for RICE and CMD2) ... it's been rock-solid for almost a year now.

If power is no cost, then why not? The points aren't going to be record breaking, but every work unit matters, and the console client is still doing very valuable work for the project.

If you would rather get more competitive pointage out of the boxen, then as AgrFan mentioned, you can put them on WCG, or any number of other projects that the [H]orde is working on. The Commando's will be able to help you out with any questions on non-F@H projects in the DC-Vault thread if you choose to go in another direction.

But either way, welcome back!
