Ok gentlemen. I just got my board all hooked up and its running smoothly. Now I want to get the most out of the performance of this board but this is my first time ever to overclocking. I dont want to do any hardcore ocing, just something to give me a little more oomph.

Can you guys please instruct me how to ocing from the bios? Again, please bare with me as I am a total noob in the world of ocing. BTW this is going to be strictly on air.

Asus p4p800se
3.4 Ghz Pentium 4
BFG 6800 Ultra
1 Gb Kingston PC3200 value ram
100 Gb Western Digital
160 Gb Maxtor
Creative xfi
480 Watts PSU
Windows Xp Professional sp2

Well, starting with a 3.4Ghz chip, you might not get too much more out of it. But in the bios, adjust the FSB up incrementally, maybe up from 200 to 205 just to see if it will work and then go into Windows and run Prime95 for a while to see if the OC is stable.

Is there a guide for ocing newbies that I can read up on? Im at a total loss at how to oc and i really need the assistance of you HARD members. Thanks

Im sorry this might be a total noob question but what is 3.4 c or 3.4e? Also, how would I go about finding out?

C is Northwood, and E is Prescott. C is better "clock for clock" but E will overclock further. Realistic limit of 3.4C is 3.6Ghz (maybe). 3.4E will do 3.8-4.0Ghz depending on the cooling. You can check using CPU-Z. It will tell you if it's a Northwood or Prescott under "code name."

Very likely it's a 3.4E because there weren't very many 3.4C's.

Lower the memory divider and start bumping up the FSB in small increments.

My processor is a prescott. My p4p800 se bios has an auto overclocking that will oc by 10% increments. If I use this option, would this raise all items that needs to be applied like fsb and make it a safe oc or is it beter to manually oc? Thanks

The automatic oc is pretty bad, ups the voltage unnecesarily, see how far you can go without moving the voltage or do you have good cooling ?

Im cooling with the Zalman nps9500 led. I wish I can water cool but again I just want very little overclocking nothing drastic. How about the windows based asus ai booster ocing tool? Is that any good or is going through the bios the safer bet? Its just that the bios does not give me the option to oc without the percentage increments.

what do you think would be the most I can get out of my 3.4 p4 prescott cooling on air?

Your RAM will be a limiting factor...I took my mixed sticks of value RAM (Corsair and Kingston) up to 220 before getting some g.skill stuff. :D

I'm guessing at or around 220 at a 1:1 ratio...but then at 3740 MHz, temperatures may play a factor..but it is a Prescott.

Just keep bumping up the fsb till you hit a wall somewhere. Once you hit the temperature or voltage walls though, that's when you're stuck. No idea on max voltage, but load temps under 60°C are what I like.

My bet is on the RAM...the Prescotts were supposed to clock high...

Anyway, there aren't guarantees in overclocking, if you've got all the hardware...THEN WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?! STOP POSTING AND GET OC'ING!!! :p

This is probably better suited in the oc forum though...you'll get more and faster responses.

Ok...sorry for that but Ive recently changed out my ram to OCZ platinum 2gb of RAM. Ive then also increased my fsb to 217 but then my system rebooted after 30 minutes of playing CS:S. What should my next step be to get a higher overclock? Thanks

That RAM wont go far 1:1, try a divider or lower the timings.
