Just wondering if their was a way to use a stock opteron 165 fan with p4 3gig on a asus p4p800. My stock p4 fan makes a lot of noise and my cpu idles at 43. The amd fan looks a lot better. But could it fit?

The only way I can think of to do it is find some sort of 3rd party retention module that would replace the current one. For example, the XP-90 retention module basically changes the regular AMD one to a s478 P4 one and you "might" be able to use any P4 HSF with that. Just look for it in reverse.

Thank you for your response. BTW do you know if the stock hs fan paste for my p4 will stick on my cpu? I would hate bending some pins because the heat sink wont come off.

Depends on how long it's been on there. Mine stuck to the stock thermal pad and I ripped it out not knowing that my CPU would still be attached. Still works though.

usually to try and prevent that from happening they run the system under load (prime95) for a while and then turn it off and remove the heatsink. alternatively there are methods like using a hairdryer to warm up the paste. of course, only try the hairdryer method if the heatsink is actually stuck.
