Hey guys, I havent upgraded my pc in years and its still going strong (i think so anyway heh)

P4 3.06GHz
2GB PC 2700
Ati X1950XT

But im getting some heavy fps drops in TF2 and that I cannot take! :D

I've been looking at the new C2D upgrade packages and Im really unsure how big the upgrade will do to my pc? How big will my grin be if I buy new stuff?

New upgrade packet for $300
MSI P35 NEO-F, P35, Socket-775, DDR2, 1333FSB, ATX, GbLAN, PCI-Ex16
Corsair Value S. PC5300 DDR2 2048MB Kit w/two matched Value Select 1024MB
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz 1333Mhz Socket LGA775, 4MB, BOXED m/fläkt

Will this new C2D help solve my fps problems I do I really need a new vid card also?

Thanks

That package looks good. I'd go with the Abit iP35-E instead of that mobo though. Otherwise, you're set for much smoother gameplay methinks. :)

I second the Abit iP35-E, great budget board with good overclockability. Id invest in some better memory myself. Tons of good ddr2 800 with D9(most overclock past 1000Mhz) can be had for $80-$100 with MIR that bring them down around $50.

Hi and thanks for the replies

So, should I take these instead?

Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB CL5 Kit w/two matched CM2X1024A-6400 Dimm's - $70

New setup:

ABIT IP35-E, P35, Socket-775, ATX, SATAII, GbLAN, DDR2, PCI-Ex16
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.67GHz 1333Mhz Socket LGA775, 4MB, BOXED
Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB CL5 Kit w/two matched CM2X1024A-6400 Dimm's

total: $340

do you plan to go Vista any time in the near future and still play games?

right now memory is basically at a multi year all time low price, i would suggest buying 4Gb of memory now instead of 2Gb

This RAM is dirt cheap after the rebate. Consider it. :)

yep! $80 after rebate would net you 4Gb's too

i am still amazed, just started looking at PC hardware a lot recently and i remember paying $335 for a CPU, and $300 for 1Gb of nice memory, and that was only like a year or two ago, within the past two years anyways, and the parts bought for 25% of that today would smoke what was so expensive back then

You get used to it! After 15 years of PC use I've learned to swallow that pill. Sometimes I get fedup and don't upgrade for a year or two but I'm always back for more

in general this always happens, but right now it's cheaper than usual and performance is higher than usual in the same 1 year period....its a good time to build a system

If you don't like to deal with rebates, this RAM is good:
$66 - G.Skill 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-800 F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ

If you do like to deal with rebates, get those OCZ sticks posted above. If you want to OC to 4Ghz, get some Crucial Ballistix instead (they can OC to DDR2-1066 if needed):
$95 - Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-800 BL2KIT12864AA804 ($40 MIR)

I have the DS3R, E6750, Ballistix, and an Ultima90 + 92mm Panaflo fan, and I can reach 3.8Ghz, 24hrs orthos stable with a max load temp of 52°C using CoreTemp 0.95.4 (22°C ambient).

RAM is cheap, so 4GB would be nice if you could afford it. Definately go with the Ultima90 and panaflo fan if you want to OC. The stock cooler will be good until around 3Ghz, but the chip can do a lot more.

$46 - Thermalright Ultima 90 CPU HS + Panaflo Hydrowave Fan, FBA09A12M - Z ($3)

Formulas for Intel platform @ 1:1 settings: (base FSB speed is SDR, or single data rate)
(CPU Multiplier) x [Base FSB speed] = CPU Clock speed
2 x [Base FSB speed] = RAM speed (DDR: double data rate)
4 x [Base FSB speed] = Effective FSB speed (QDR: quad data rate)

On Intel platforms, running the RAM higher than a 1:1 ratio with the CPU is, for the most part, useless, so don't bother trying to do so. If the BIOS does it for you, just let it. All you need is a 1:1 config, though. Here's some possible clock speeds (as always with OC'ing, your results will vary):

E6750: 8 × 333 = 2.6Ghz, DDR2-667 << STOCK speeds
E6750: 8 × 400 = 3.2Ghz, DDR2-800 << Easy OC
E6750: 8 × 450 = 3.6Ghz, DDR2-900 << Good OC
E6750: 8 × 500 = 4.0Ghz, DDR2-1000 << Great OC

Two years ago 2GB of DDR500 cost me $250... and my Opty 165 cost me $275... I'm not sure where you guys were shopping, lol. My opty165 @ 2.6Ghz is similar to an E4300 at stock 1.8Ghz.

Hey

I cant use rebates, dont live in the US :(

And Im not really good at overclocking, never got into it kinda, just using default settings on my machine

now im at $410 , found the C2D 3.0 Ghz.. gah should just buy an xbox 360 instead :p

i may have overestimated the memory cost....$250-$300 was for 1Gb (2x512 of excellent memory)....not much difference, magnitudes more than $80-$120 for 2-4Gb of overclocking memory, and i paid $335 for my Opty 165 because they were $300 at the time at newegg.com but i could walk into Monarch at that time and get a specific stepping, walked out with a CCB1E stepping for $335 because of local sales tax, but it was worth it rather than a crap shoot on a stepping and waiting days to get it;)

Well, it would help if you told us WHERE you live, and where you'll actually be shopping, then.

No need to be good at OC'ing. Its so easy with these Core2 chips its not even a question of whether or not you should OC, but HOW MUCH you should OC. A simple, yet modest, OC would only require one or two BIOS setting changes -- not even an aftermarket heatsink unless you go with a quadcore.

Buy and xbox 360 if you don't want to deal with computers.

Hey

I live in sweden so I will buy in-country, we dont have the luxuryites of all these rebates/deals that you guys have :/

Gonna order this today and try to overclock it to 3.2Ghz. Hopefully the intel fan will be able to keep the temperature down..

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.67GHz 1333Mhz Socket LGA775, 4MB, BOXED
ABIT IP35-E, P35, Socket-775, ATX, SATAII, GbLAN, DDR2, PCI-Ex16
Crucial DDR2 BallistiX PC6400 2048MB CL4 ,Kit w/two BallistiX 1024MB's, E.P.P

Total price : $360

Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it

Keep the load temps under 60°C to be safe. The actual max temp for the CPU is 85°C, though. Keep the voltage under 1.55v (max). I'm not sure if the stock Intel fan will keep it cool enough, but you can try it. My Ultima90 and Tuniq Tower both keep my E6750 at 27°C idle and 52°C during full load (ambient 22°C).

Actually, you will need a new PCI-Express graphics card on top of your new processor, motherboard and memory. This is because your current X1950XT graphics card has an AGP interface, which most new motherboards have no provision at all whatsoever for. And the motherboard that you currently have, being manufactured before the advent of PCI-Express, is definitely an AGP-based motherboard.

Hi

My GFX card is PCI-E, and everything works great, overclocked the cpu to 3.2Ghz and now everything is smoooooooth.. except crysis

What'd you push the E6750 to? 4Ghz? :p Pickup a new graphics card in a couple months, when the next gen is out.

Hehe nah, just clocked it to 3.2 Ghz from 2.67... Dont have a good cooler atm, using the intel fan..

Gonna get a new DX10 card after christmas probably

Oh, I see. You have a Socket LGA775 motherboard which uses either an Intel 915 series chipset or a non-Intel chipset. The 915 is the only official series of Intel-made chipsets which supports DDR1 memory and PCI-e. (The 915P supports either DDR1 or DDR2 memory. Intel uses a similar approach today in its P35 chipset, which supports either DDR2 or DDR3 memory.)

What resolution are you playing Crysis at?

+1 for ABIT IP35-E
+1 for 2GB G.Skill PC2-6400 800mhz ram
+1 for Intel E6600 or E6750 (depending on how much performance/OCing you need)

Hey!

Regarding crysis, I have disabled AA and put reso at 1440 I belive with everything on high, runs good but gets _very_ slow with AA on..

Regarding temperature
I have done the first test with prime98 (small FTT test) and get to 53degress on cpu and 59 on the AUX.

Havent run the test for hours tho,
