Overheating or application's fault?

Hey all,
I have three computers folding for the horde, which is not a lot but I still feel like I am contributing. I keep having a problem with all three however. I am using the graphical client on all three machines, and whenever it runs for a long time the F@H program seems to crash at the end of a WU. I am not quite sure how this is happening because I have never been at my computers at the time, but it seems like sometimes when I come back from doing something else the program has stopped working. It varies, like sometimes my home machine will finish 10 WU's before the program crashes, and sometimes it will crash after only one.

My question is: Is it a problem with my computers or with the client itself?

I had the same issue with the graphical client I switched to mainly SMP console clients and it solved it.

Why don't you try switching over one of your computers to the text only console version if you can't run the SMP client (you need a dual or quad core cpu for the SMP version). The text only console is more efficient anyway.
Some 3rd party software can also cause problems. NOD32 (on my 64 bit vista system) prevents the folding software from starting on a new work unit once the previous one has been uploaded. Disabling real time scanning in nod fixed that one (although it leaves your computer a bit more at risk). Finally, if you are overheating you can configure the clients to only run at 70% cpu utilization. It will slow things down, but hopefully it should allow your cooling system to keep up better with the heat. If these computers are old or are new but someplace dusty....take off the computer case cover and look at your cpu heat sink and mother board. It may be covered in dust. Blow it off and things should run much cooler.

Definately go with the console client instead....Its not hard to configure and will maximize your resources.

Your first option should be to get rid of the graphical client and run the console client instead. There have always been problems with the graphical client and to get the most out of your system, the console client is the way to go.

Since you can setup the console client as a service, you won't ever even have to see it outside of a monitoring program like FaHSpy or FahMon or when you open up task manager and see the client eating up all your spare CPU cycles.

I've never actually used the graphical client as I prefer to use all my cycles for folding rather than some pretty pictures and I've heard of a lot of trouble with the graphical client over the years. Anything from instability to problems with DirectX, especially if you game.

okay, I will switch to the console client on my two desktops to see if it will make a difference, but I don't know about my laptop. for my laptop, is there a way to make the console client open a console window every time I start windows? I want to have more control over it for when I am putting my computer onto battery power.

You can set the console client to pause when on battery power.

Is it possible to put the console program into the startup folder to load up each time windows boots so that it doesn't have to be a service?

Just make yourself a shortcut to it, and place that in the startup folder. That way, you can also insert the "-advmethods -forceasm -verbosity 9" on to the command line parameters as well. (SMP only)

I've got the graphical client running on a few boxen. I've never had any problems with it. None. Not a single problem.

Are your machines overclocked? Full of dust bunnies? Whirled peas?

My home desktop is running a 200mhz overclock, and my laptop and this dell are running stock. temps hover around 60c on both my laptop and desktop under full load, however. I just completely disassembled my laptop, and my desktop was recently cleaned so they are relatively dust free.
