Hi All,
OK here is the situation:

I currently have an Asus A8V Deluxe MOBO...with a 3200+ Venice..both are going to be sold
next week !!

I also have 2 gigs of Patriot DDR-400 with timings of 2-3-2-5

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220040

I am looking into buying another motherboard and an Opteron processor...

Which socket 939 MOBO is best for overclocking other than the DFI Lan board ??

BY THE WAY THIS MACHINE IS USED MAINLY FOR PHOTOSHOP AND RIPPING DVD'S ..........NO GAMING AT ALL !!!!

Secondly..Am I better off just buying an Opteron 185 (2.6 GHZ) and trying to overclock it to say 2.8 GHZ or better ??

BOTTOM LINE WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET AS CLOSE TO 2.8 OR EVEN 3.0 GHZ USING A SOCKET 939 ???

dont get a 185 unless you like paying for nothing....

whats wrong with a DFI? its the only brand that will for sure hit 300+ HTT

I have and would get a DFI ultra-D and an opteron 165 from newegg they currently have been shipping CCBBE 0610-0615s which hit 2.6-3.0+ regularly and are some of the best

but if you dont want a DFI get a Asus a8n32 or the Abit equivalent and an opteron 170 or 175 and have the 10x or 11x so you mobo doesnt have to work that hard...

but really save some money... get a DFI and an opteron 165.

I will walk you through OCing if you want...

I agree a DFI board is probably the best with either Opteron 165 or 170.

My Asus board seems to be OK. Good RAM and a good PSU helps

I bought my Opty 2 weeks ago a just overclocked it this week.

2.8 was easy with medium quality air. Will probably go higher but I want to get better cooling first.

^^^ yep. agreed 100%... cept the Abit part (I'm still a disgruntled former follower). Many people have had plenty of success with lesser "value" boards.... but that's a hit or miss situation (as with any overclocking YMMV, but that mileage is a whole lot better with DFI!)

I think 2.8 is fairly common with the current crop of 165's and 170's (so glad I waited until now to get one... <$185). Heat is always an issue with OC'n. Got my 170 to 2.9GHz with a Zalman 9500, 3.0GHz with a "rigged" Tt Bigwater (with a cpu block designed for socket 478!). Swiftech kit is being delivered today... would love to break that 3.0GHz barrier.

I myself am a disgruntled Asus user  and like my Abit NV8 but I guess we all have our horror stories. :p

For s939 DFI is really the way to go. Yes they have a lot of options which can make them a little intimidating but if you can get someone familiar with DFI boards to help you it will be well worth it. They consistently get good reviews from both professionals and enthusiasts alike. I kinda wish I'd gotten one when I bought my NV8 (hindsight). Don't get me wrong - I like the Abit but I've always wondered what a DFI would have done.

As for the cpu - listen to these guys. I'm still on s754 single core architecture (its all I need atm) so I really can't help you there.
