So I just ordered a new laptop from dell. A 1720. Really nice. But I've got this desktop here and I'm wondering what I can do with overclocking because I've read some good things about P4 with 800 FSB hyperthreading OCing.

Here are my specs.
This is the computer I have .. basically..
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c00024879&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

It's the HP a250n. I've added an ATI Radeon X1600 PRO 512 MB DDR2, and a vantec tornado for cooling. The ram was upgraded to 1 ggb pc3200. I also added a new & bigger case, and a thermaltake 420watt powersupply. The powersupply will be replaced with a 500watt for free very soon courtesy of new egg's black friday deal.

I've been looking at OCing guides and they all talk about what kind of core stepping the processor has. I don't know how to figure out what core stepping my p4 has.

I just know that it is a 865G chipset and the processor is mPGA478.

How would I go about overclocking this computer? Would it make a huge difference? What kind of increase in speed can I expect?

I use this computer primarily for gaming CSS. Is it also possible to OC the radeon X1600 PRO?

In order to overclock, you need a motherboard with a good number of overclocking options. The HP most likely does not have any overclocking options.

GO download CPU-Z and it will tell you the processor stepping there.

Yes you can still OC the video card. Use ATI Tool to do so.

how do i OC the card? and what did you mean by the motherboard having to have a number of overclocking options?

Overclocking options on a motherboard include:
- Ability to adjust the FSB
- Ability to adjust RAM speed
- Ability to adjust voltages
- etc.

The HP mobo doesn't have any of those options. As for overclocking the card, download, install and use ATI Tool to OC the card. Just raise the Core and Memory speed 10Mhz at a time, scanning for artifacts for at least 30 minutes every 10Mhz increase.. If no artifacts show up, continue raising until you finally get one artifact during 30 minutes of testing. Then drop down to your previous 10Mhz setting and you're set.

You can find more info on overclocking if you check out the Overclocking and Cooling forum we have here.
